Associated Press MILWAUKEE Center Kent Benson's debut in the National Basketball Association was a brief and painful one.

The Milwaukee Bucks' rookie All-American from Indiana saw only two minutes and nine seconds of action in the regular season opener Tuesday night before being decked by a punch thrown by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar of the Los Angeles Lakers. Abdul-Jabbar, the most valuable player in the NBA last season, was ejected from the game and went back to his hotel room to watch the World Series. It was determined Thursday that Jabbar sustained a broken bone in his right hand from the punch. Benson, who suffered a mild concussion, bruises and lacerations that required two stitches, was unable to play the rest of the game and did not join the Bucks on a trip to Denver for a game with the Nuggets Wednesday night. Benson said that he elbowed Abdul-Jabbar after the Lakers' center had jostled him on an earlier play.

Benson said the elbowing, which left Abdul-Jabbar doubled over momentarily, "was not a vicious shot." "I blocked his cut and in the process of blocking the cut there was an elbow in my chest," said Benson. "In the process of restoring my position, I blocked him with my elbow." "I turned away to play defense," the puffy-eyed rookie continued. "He must have lost his composure, and 1 got hit." Casa Grande's largest margin of victory has been only seven points, and the Cougars have had to come from behind to win four of their five games. "They're playing with more intelligence concentrating on what they're doing, Russum said. "The biggest thing they've done is quit making the mistakes we're famous for the fumbling and so forth." Perhaps the turning point in the season came two weeks ago when the Cougars came back in the final 21 seconds to defeat Mesa, 19-14, for the first time since 1964.

Russum credits a series of tapes by Baylor University coach Grant Teaff with the change in attitude. "I think he got more things across to the kids in those tapes than we have in three years," Russum said. "The Mesa game is a good example. The kids probably would have folded up and quit in the past, but they didn't quit. They realize they have something good going and they're not going to let anyone take it from them easily." Tackle Bob Bard (6-3, 215) and guard Mike Macias (6-0, 185) are two of the team's top offensive linemen, opening holes for backs Doug Williams, Kenny Crouch, Dave Quintanar and Steve Wyble.

Quarterback David Evers, elevated to the varsity as a sophomore to start the final six games last year, is developing confidence in his passing. Safety Jackie Allen, middle guard Mike Robinson (5-7, 175) and tackle Bob Carrasco (6-0, 210) have shored up the defense. "I think we can shut off Saguaro defensively," Russum said. "If the defense holds, I think we can move the ball on them." By LEE SHAPPELL Jim Russum does not like to say things have gone poorly in his Casa Grande High football program in recent years he does not have to. The Cougars performed on the field with the grace Gerald Ford deplaning.

Casa Grande's most famous play was the fumble. But. alt bad things must come to an end. Suddenly, 1 the Cougars find themselves with a 5-1 record overall and a 2-0 mark in Central Division A League games. Although Casa Grande has not overpowered anyone (the Cougars have been outscored 85-79 this year), it has not lost since Its season opener to Chandler.

I Russum, in his third year as coach at Casa Grande, tls not at a total loss explaining his team's success, but 4 even he admits he is surprised. I "It's been a pleasant surprise," Russum said. "I expected improvement this year, but with the program we've had in the past I thought we might be around the .500 mark." Casa Grande, coming off a 1-8-1 record, has not had a winning season since 1068. The Cougars have never taken part in a Class AAA playoff game, but are in i danger of breaking that record this year. A victory league-leading Saguaro (4-2, 3-0) Friday night in Scottsdale would be a big step toward that end.

Russum credits the players' dissatisfaction with their tosing tradition and their willingness to work hard to turn it around with their success. "The kids got together before the season started and set team goals," Russum said. "Their No. 1 goal was to be part of the team that turned the program around, they're playing more aggressively than they ever have and they just don't quit." LkAOUfc it. Morgan, a defensive back, drew critical comment on national television when his forearm blow to the chin crumpled Steelers receiver Jon Stallworth, triggering howls from the crowd at Three Rivers Stadium.

"I didn't mean to do it. He had caught the football and was trying to cut the grain (change directions). I was almost past him. It was an instinctive, last alternative thing," said Morgan. "I wouldn't have hit him, but it was the only thing I could rely on at the time." For a moment, it looked as though the hit, ruled a personal foul, might spark the latest furor between the two rivals.

Stallworth cooled the debate, however by shrugging off the incident. 2-31 51034 40 S5K 20- I I Cash MfGre (7 35.00 12 CLASS North Oivision St Johns 10, 1 176-33)1 Blu R-dae 14. 3-3 (76-92); Round Valley 1-0. 15 196-121); Show Low 1-1, 3 2 141-77), Alcnasav frl, 0-4 (12-162)1 Valley 0-2, 1-4 14-1071.
