Cojak, the 1975 Maryland-bred 2-year-old champion, is among 28 eligibles for that test. THE SLATE'S BEEN wiped clean. 'It's a brand new year.

So everyone starts with zero earnings when the 1978 PGA Tour gets under way this week. The starting site Is down the road a piece at Tucson National Golf Club's sprawling acreage that has yielded some sensational par-busting scores coming up to this year's renewal of the $200,000 Joe Garagiola Tucson Open that tees off Thursday. For three years running, Johnny Miller was unbeatable In the event. Then 25-year-old Bruce LieUke, stealing some of the Miller magic, ended Johnny's reign last January with a seeing-eye putt In the 70-foot range that enabled the husky Texas pro to edge veteran Gene Littler In a four-hole playoff. Littler, multiple Phoenix Open champ, was destined later to lose a three-hole playoff for the 1977 PGA Championship to Lanny Wadkins who had luck riding with him in emerging triumphant.

Anyway, it'll be LieUke who had a great year in 1977 as one of the tour's young lions who'll start the New Year as defending titlist at Tucson National's par-72 layout. With Miller coming off a bad year, golfdom's tour followers are wondering whether Johnny can put it all together again in '78. Tucson National has to be one of the former National Open champion's favorite courses. Johnny practically destroyed it en route to his third triumph at Tucson in 1976. Unforgettable is Miller's mastery of the course with rounds of 66, 69 and 67 before wrapping up the title with a torrid 11-under-par 61.

He labeled the round better than the closing 63 that earned him the U.S. Open crown in 1973. Miller's incredible finishing round included nine birdies and one eagle and was concluded with a 14-foot bird on the tough 18th hole. It gave him a 72-hole total of 25-under 263 that doesn't figure to be bettered at Tucson National GC this year or ever. Arthur Snyder, former course superintendent at Paradise Valley CC, has been selected to receive a high honor.

Purtzer's 73-212 earned the Phoenix pro $800 second place money. Tying for third with 213 totals were Phoenix pro Fred Voelkel (70), Tom Storey of Las Vegas, Nev. (72) and Jim Wittenberg, Memphis, Tenn. (71). DAILT CLOSED JAN.

Bing Crosby's youngest son Nathaniel, has left music lessons far behind him and is aiming for a career as a professional golfer. "I'm not a performer by any means. My dad once told me before our family did a show, 'I know music is not your only he didn't use those exact words," the 16-year-old Crosby said as he talked of his late father and also about the future of the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am tournament.

"I'd usually do a comedy routine with him and say, 'Where's all that talent I was supposed to inherit?" Bing Crosby, almost until he was 70, was a golfer capable of matching par, so there must be some heredity involved in Nathaniel's game.

He was the No. 1 player last spring as a sophomore on the Burlingame High School golf team and he won the club championship at Burlingame Country Club. He had a round of 69, including an eagle, in another tournament, "When I won the club championship, Dad told me: 'Good We didn't break out the champagne or anything. That wasn't his way," he said. Nathaniel and his father played many rounds together and the teen-ager says Bing was about as even tempered as could be expected from the entertainer with the famous easy-going style.

"But I saw him throw a club once in a while," he said. "He usually laughed after he did it." 60-nOIITII BATTERY REPLACEMENT: LIMITED TTPTS 11 1JTH-60TM MONTH Da 11 i 1 1 1 M0HATA ADJUSTMENT I Should my Suptr 60 Dirtily 9r5agSi) hi (not minly ditchnjtl wild in jl -m'liiti'S I thitoignatiditplKifliintptiioi I thi bittiiy owy ittuinri by msbS- i I fti erifinal nm tt nut to eay 1 1 1 1 nplKimnt at no chaffi upon 0 I piwnWtoiiof InrKtiptAttn li! 1 1 1 ni nplKiintnt pinod tut Won I (Jj If if I I At npinlion dill ol th Mr 'T A lilt rtTll I nnty, mirt will nplKt i fiild nl no timo ol nura iionM own not ipply to komiiii Nhick km i With "My father was aware of my to become a golfer," the high school junior said at the Crosby home here, explaining how Bing allowed him to take part in planning for the tournament and also to become an amateur participant beginning two years ago.
