THIS YEAR'S BEST of show was awarded to Lois Gutierrez for her pottery work, a large bowl titled, "Hunter Turkey." Not only did she capture best of show, but best of New Mexico pottery, best of pottery, best of craftsman and best of contemporary pottery. Ms. Gutierrez's work, along with all other award winners, will be on display in the museum's West Gallery through Dec. 3.

One of the entries is a silver and turquoise salt and pepper shaker set, displaying a four-inch high and on the sides. Basket seekers will have to be content with a selection of Apache burden baskets in varying sizes, plus a smaller display of coiled baskets. As with most exhibits, the Guild show runs in cycles.

Last year it was baskets, this year pottery. The pottery ranges from miniatures to full- then turned over to the museum. Last year's show netted the Guild $15,000. Strolling through the exhibit, one is struck by the diversity of themes. While traditional Indian themes remain in the majority, some have been treated with a contemporary twist, partic pan la cazuela to cook cocinar; guisar to boil hervir to bake coceraftorno to heat caientar to fry freir By HARDY PRICE The 11th annual Heard Museum Guild Indian Arts and Crafts Exhibit opens this weekend just in time for Christmas shoppers to make holiday selections.

This year shoppers will find baskets in short supply, an abundance of pottery, some interesting jewelry (including more gold work than in past years) and a rather mundane collection of paintings. "WE HAVE IN the neighborhood of 2,000 entries," said Mrs. Frank C. Jones, chairman of this year's show, "and overall, I think the quality is very good. The contemporary jewelry is very exciting and although we're short on baskets (there is an increase of) quilts this year." There has been a drop in entries because of a statewide student show at Northern Arizona University scheduled for this weekend, and a commercial show in Scottsdale, also this weekend.

ALL OF THE items exhibited at the museum show are for sale, with the Indians determining the price. The Guild receives part of the gross for their efforts in presenting the show. The painting of Choctaw Indians by Valjean Hessing was winner of the Pierce-Avery Memorial award at the exhibit, an award presented by Marjorie Pierce Avery and family. The exhibit opens to public this weekend.
