jr. The Arizona Republic Pleasu Mac, Nervous John match up have won by five or six lengths and everybody'd say the good horse won, and ail that." Jockey Al Herrera, who rode Pleasu Mac in his only two starts (he won the first, a maiden race, by 10 lengths), said, "He's probably the nicest 2-year-old I've ever ridden. He's never been tested down the Lane and he's a little green right now. "I mean, when he goes to a horse, he doesn't know how to go by him. He just waits.

But once he goes by, he wants to keep going. The farther the better." Herrera used to ride against Mac's Pleasure, the colt's sire. "Pleasu Mac looks exactly like him, has almost the same, long stride," he said. And that concerns "In the event of rain this week, I don't know how he'd run on an track. His father hated an off-track." Cheap horses could, and did, beat him.

But preacti-cally nobody could beat him on a fast track. He came within 15 of a second of the world record when he won the Phoenix Gold Cup in 1976 at 55 3 5 for five furlongs." Lockwood said he's tried to shield Pleasu Mac from an off-track. "Also," he said, "he's never been in tight quarters (bunched up) and I don't know how he'd react to that situation. He hasn't had the seasoning he needs. We can't work other horses with him because he's so much better than they are.

If we start him off behind, he just blows by them and gets nothing out of it." Ready for the Phoenix Futurity last April, Pleasu Mac developed a throat infection and a bad cough. Sent to Connie Stewart's farm in Colorado to recuperate, he resumed light training in August and was returned here late in October. i ri Dr. McLoughlin said, stride and he'd slip on Mac's Pleasure had a long a sloppy or muddy track. By GEORGE CHRISMAN JR.

One of the great matchups in Arizona racing history will take place Sunday when Pleasu Mac and Nervous John hook up in the 28th running of the Arizona Breeders' Futurity. A field of 12 2-year-olds will run six furlongs for the winner's share of an estimated $35,000 purse in the Arizona Downs headliner at Turf Paradise. The experts caution anything can happen when juveniles go to the post, but fan interest is at an all-time high for this battle-of-the-sexes rematch. Nervous John, a fleet filly owned by Bill Luke attracted nationwide attention when she scored impressive victories in six major stakes races in Kentucky, Chicago and New York. She went into, last week's Breeders' trials as odds-on favorite.

Fate placed her in the same heat as Pleasu Mac, son of 1973 Arizona Horse of the Year Mac's Pleasure. Pleasu Mac romped to a six-length victory. Dr. George McLoughlin, a retired New York surgeon residing in Sun City who owns Pleasu Mac, was not impressed. "There's no way in the world you can convince me that horse (Nervous John) had its best race (last) Wednesday," he said.

"Nervous John is a much, much better horse than it showed. I saw her work out a few days before the race and she was moving over a very poor track (because of recent rains) in good order, tn very good time, well held and going good. "Nervous John has proven herself against top notch competition all over the country. Don't ever forget that. That's class." Trainer Richard Lickwood was surprised by the ease with which Pleasu Mac handled Nervous John in the trials.

"My horse ran like he'd run 12 times and she ran like she'd only been to the post "once before," he said. "If Pleasu Mac hadn't been in that heat, she'd Wallace settles out of court affected by the order. Eisner said Wallace collected his winnings last; Friday, and "everyone has been paid" as a result of the out-of-court deal, though specific terms of the agreement were not given. Wallace was not available to comment on reports that he has agreed to repay Church periodically from his future boxing proceeds, excluding fees for his trainer and corner men. Wade Church acknowledged that his agreement to the out-of-court settlement was partly due to the state superior court's questionable jurisdiction to' given preference to any creditor listed in a federal bankruptcy petition.

Technically, the settlement permits Wallace to keep the entire $5,100 purse because he did not fight Love until after the bankruptcy petition was filed. Federal bankruptcy rules do place some restrictions on money earned before a petition is filed, however, fueling speculation that the winnings will be subject to further liens because Wallace was in training for the fight thus earning the money long before he requested. bankruptcy. "I tend to think he'll be able to keep the purse," said Wallace attorney Hocker. The boxer's bankruptcy petition lists a total of $35,129 in liabilities, including $9,979 in unsecured debts and $25,150 in mortgage loans.

Wallace listed $46,250 in total assets, though he placed his total 1978 income at only $893. Dr. George McLoughlin and Pleasu Mac Sonics search for center By MARC ADAMS Phoenix businessman Tom Church has withdrawn a Superior Court claim against boxer Edgar "Bad News" Wallace, allowing the money-troubled fighter to collect his disputed $5,100 purse from his Thanksgiving eve rematch with San Diego middleweight David Love. Attorney Wade Church confirmed the out-of-court settlement Monday, two weeks after he filed the bad debt claim on behalf of his son Tom. The bargain between Church and Wallace attorney R.

Kelly Hocker killed a temporary restraining order issued by Judge Kenneth Chatwin on the day of the Phoenix Civic Plaza bout. The order had frozen nearly half the total $28,098 gate proceeds against a $3,380 loan Church claims to have made to Wallace last September. Though Wallace's purse amounted to $5,100, including a $1,100 advance, Chatwin's order also had locked up an estimated $10,000 share belonging to Phoenix boxing promoter Steve Eisner from the Nov. 22 Wallace-Love bout, which was seen as a comeback for Wallace's faltering career. Wallace knocked out Love with a left hook at 1.31 of the second round, avenging a loss to Love, the lOth-ranked California middleweight, last January.

Chatwin signed the order just one day after the boxer filed for bankruptcy in U.S. District Court, listing no cash on hand and more than $35,000 in mortgages, hospital bills and other debts. Superior Court records of the Church-Wallace case include an agreement signed by Wallace Oct. 27 in which the fighter consented to repay Church from his Nov. 22 winnings.

Wallace subsequently listed the debt as an unsecured loan in his federal bankruptcy petition, however, postponing the collection of his debts including Church's loan and enabling him to use his boxing income to improve his financial condition. Church then obtained the restraining order to attach the fighter's purse in a legal maneuver to avoid the time-consuming federal bankruptcy proceedings. He was the team's No. 2 rebounder overall and led the team in offensive rebounds. When LaGarde was hurt, Wilkens moved power forward Jack Sikma into the center spot. Sikma responded with a 29-point, 20-rebound performance in Seattle's 100-97 victory over the 76ers. Wilkens said he thought the most plausible route would be to look for someone outside the NBA as a replacement for LaGarde.

"I've been called and offered some deals, but nothing worthwhile," Wilkens said. "They wouldn't even make sense." The Sonic coach said he wouldn't be interested in a rookie castoff.
