Goren A well executed campaign by South enabled declarer to obtain an accurate count of an opponent's distribution and execute the somewhat unorthodox play required to salvage his six heart contract. South opened the bidding with one heart, West overcalled two clubs and North freely bid two diamonds. East raised his partner to three clubs and South now jumped to four hearts, holding the equivalent of at least eight winners in his own hand. This bid is by no means a closeout in light of the fact that partner has shown a good hand himself when he competes aggressively at the two level. Although North held nothing much to spare in the way of high card values, the two red controls appeared to be significant values, and there was no way that South could know that his partner had the ace of hearts.

North accordingly made a slam try by overbidding the game in hearts. Although South was aceless, he promptly accepted the invitation because of his black controls. West opened the ace of clubs on which East signalled encouragingly with the nine and declarer ruffed with the five of hearts. There was a temptation to cash the king and queen of diamonds and then draw trump ending in dummy in an attempt to discard spades on North's good diamonds. However, West's vulnerable overcall and East's raise suggested that the red suits were not apt to divide favorably on the deal.

Declarer decided to run several rounds of trumps first in order to gain information You can relieve your family from the of arranging your funeral Let us show you how. Camelback Sunset Chapel Funeral Home 301 W. Camelback a a a a a a a a a a a A A East West vulnerable. A heart was led to the ace and then another back to the king, as that suit divided evenly.

South led three more hearts, on which West discarded clubs. North gave up one club, one spade, and one diamond. East parted with the four and five of clubs and then the duece of diamonds. The king of diamonds was cashed and the queen was overtaken with the ace as West showed out, shedding another club. East was now known to have started with five diamonds, two hearts, and presumably four clubs (his first play in that suit was the nine that indicated a higher donor, presumably the king, followed by the four and five).

This meant that he had at most two spades, one of which was apparently the ace to warrant his vulnerable bid of three clubs. The jack of diamonds was cashed on which South discarded a spade and then a spade was led from dummy. East played the duece and declarer put up the king. When this card held the trick, he continued with a small spade. West played the nine, north the eight and East was obliged to win the ace.

Dummy's queen was thereby established for the fulfilling trick. South lost only one spade on the deal. REPUBLIC 4-Funeral CITY Taylor M. Cole Taylor M. Change pledged in legal system Stuart Schoenburg, Republican candidate for the nomination for county attorney, last night promised if elected to end abuses of the plea bargaining system that he said exist under the administration of incumbent Moise Berger.

Addressing Republican precinct committeemen meeting at Dysart School, 11405 N. Dysart Road. Schoenburg said, "It is legitimate to negotiate a plea if further investigation reveals the original charges to be overstated. "However, if a charge is reduced because the prosecutor has not taken the time to properly prepare his case or for expediency, then such plea bargaining is not legitimate, is excessive and should not be tolerated," he added. Assessor's foe assails spending Mrs.

Virginia McClellan, Republican candidate for nomination for county assessor, criticized incumbent assessor Ken Kunes last night for hiring a private attorney at $25,000 a year to represent him at tax hearings. Addressing a group of Republican officials at a meeting in Sun City, Mrs. McClellan quoted the Handbook of the International Association of Assessing Officers as saying, "The assessor shall defend and explain all property assessments." "He (Kunes) has yet to explain or defend a tax assessment before the State Board of Property Tax Mrs. McClelland said. Instead, attorney Jerry Kalyna represents him at all tax hearings, she added.
