Nonetheless, young Bogdan-ovicb, once an astute film historian and buff who turned to movie making to carry onto the American screen the "New Wave" cinema verite of the Jean Godards and Francois Truffauts, Is worthy of joining the top ranks of film directors. The remarkable thing about it is that "The Last Picture Show" is but his second film.

(The critically-hailed but so-so box office "Targets" was his first.) The tale of a Texan town in 1951 abounds with brilliant touches of reality, small nuances of the period which are masterfully though matter-of-factly executed and mirrors the decaying atmosphere of a future ghost town via the Royal movie house, which winds up having to close because of poor business. There's good reason: many haven't as yet arrived in the Valley. One did last evening, I don't have to be cautious in admitting that "The Last Picture Show," at Loew's Camelback Mall, cannot fail to make my 10 best list for '71 picture shows. And that's without having seen the New York Film Critics' winner. "A Clockwork Orange." Or "Mary Queen of Scots," "Sunday, Bloody Sunday" and "Nicholas and Alexandra." Or one or two others which have been receiving national It doesn't take very long Into this black and white film (by the end of its 119 minutes you must surely recognize the potency, the starkness in this tint) to realize that a deeply moving motion picture experience is unfolding. It doesn't take long for the awareness to creep in that it just might be one of the best American movies of its genre (life in a small town) in many a year.

It may also be one of the best acted. Almost without exception, down to the smaller parts, there are memorable character etchings.
