When the Civic Ballet had to cancel at the last minute, they brought in a rock group.

Ironically it was many of the kids who walked out: the adults stayed in their scats, wide-eyed, hands over their ears, fascinated with the display. Where else could they have witnessed a rock concert? And the rock closing was perhaps all the more fitting like Medieval jousting, classical jazz, Shakespeare rock music itself is becoming a museum piece as the new "soft" sounds gain wider audiences. Finally, perhaps you could say that no one "staged" or "put on" the Firebird Festival. It happened. And there will never be another one lik it.

The Second Annual Firebird Festival came to a resounding close last night to the sounds of theater-shaking rock music.

The Phoenix Little Theater probably never will be the same again; then again, neither will thousands of people who came, enjoyed, took part and then took some of it home with them. That looks corny in print, but that's the way it was. Perhaps, that was the charm of the whole thing: no big names, no extravaganzas and anybody could play. It had all the good old-fashioned corn that village fairs had once-upon-a-time before somebody and commercialized them. To name all the names, use all the superlatives would be pointless.

Everyone agreed the festival was a success far beyond anyone's wildest imaginings. Leaders, seasoned by their erratic first try last year, knew what they were doing. When they didn't, they improvised. And it was the improvisations which brought, some of the biggest high points. Some leaders were a little uncertain about those "kooky guys with the swords and tin suits," but members of the Society of Creative Anachronism had just the right amount of eccentric charm to enthrall everyone.

"We think there is a place for a UHF station in the Valley, which will afford an opportunity for people to be seen and heard who can't be seen and heard now. Most stations use a shotgun approach in their programming; we're using the rifle approach.
