It was Nichols' first play, and Rosenthal reports happily that, after a period of inactivity, Nichols is writing again. The play is titled "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg" and is classified as a black comedy. The situation within the play is hardly amusing, but the presentation and ironies are. Rosenthal thinks, is Nichols; Albert Finney played the role in N.Y.I and his wife. The father's mother is still an important figure in his life; a young couple, friends of the parents, round out the cast. The essence of the play, according to Rosenthal, is Nichols' wish that outsiders not be filled with special pity, considerations, and condescension toward the daughter (who resembles his own daughter), but rather that she and the entire family be treated as normal.

Though Rosenthal directs most of ACT's productions-partially because ACT can't often afford to bring in directors, or actors, who must be paid-" Joe Egg" is being directed by Jerome Guardino. Guardino has directed two ACT productions before, and Rosenthal speaks highly of his work. He also speaks highly of the structure of "Joe Egg." At times during the action, each of the characters turns to the audience and talks, usually to make a point in Rrechtian fashion. Joe Egg even gets up out of her wheel chair at the end of Act I and skips rope. The tragicomedy, ACT's fourth production of the season, continues at 8:30 p.m.

through March 15 (dark Monday and Tuesday) at the three-quarter round stage in the Santa Rita. The hist row is within 20 feet of the action, and the room holds approximately 235 people. Tickets are available at S3 through the ACT office and the Council of the Arts building in Tucson. ACT itself, of which Rosenthal, 46, is artistic director, has its own executive director and board now, and a budget this year of $39,000. It has been the force behind the founding of a Spanish-English bilingual theater for Mexican-Americans and a separate ACT organization which produces plays for children.

To all these activities Rosenthal applies a paternal, hardworking attitude: They are to be developed for the benefit of the community and they are to be strong enough to survive as organizations, whether or not he, or any individual, is there to lead them.
