LOOKING BACKWARD IN THE MIJR RO EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the first in a series of pictures The Mirror will present of scenes from Upshur County's past. Most of them were made by the late Mr. and Mrs. J. M.

Hays of Hays Studio. Some will appear, along with many other historical photograph) (more than 50 in all), in D. T. Loyd's forthcoming "History of Upshur County." The book it now being printed by the Texian Press in Waco, and will be published in October. Typography for the book was done by the Gilmer Mirror.

IN 1910 the citizens of Upshur County enjoyed a carnival on the square, just as they do nowdays when Yamboree time comes. The view is looking south toward the southwest corner of the public square. Visible are Croley Bros. Store and Robertson Bros. Pharmacy.

The small brick building on the courthouse grounds, behind the cluster of sideshow spectators at center, was occupied by the Post Office. Attraction at left is "The Girl from Dixie, Direct from the St. Louis Exposition." Union Ridge Service Club Makes Report Union Ridge Service Club was called to order by Pros. Jay Fielden, at the regular meeting time Sept. 1.

Mrs. Jay Fielden led the group in a song accompanied at the piano by Pat Benson. Invocation was given by Grover Bishop. The group voted to appoint a membership chairman. Also any applicants will be approved by the board of trustees before being accepted into the club.

Mrs. John William Fielden was appointed chairman and she in turn will select others to assist her. Mrs. Johnny Pool, program chairman, spoke about plans for the coming year, and then called for reports from the following: Grover Bishop, Farm and Home Im- provement; Mr. and Mrs.

Austin Huggins, Health and Sanitation; Mrs. Walter Stewart, Beautification; Mrs. Bonar Denson, 4-H Leader; Mrs. A. H.

Knight, Food Chairman; and Mrs. Otis Helms, Card Chairman. Recognition was given Mr. and Mrs. Russell Green for their work with the rodeo, Miss Pat Denson, as nominee for Yamboree Queen, and Betty Lou Huggins as reporter for the club.

'The club will sponsor a carnival Oct. 8 beginning at p.m. on the service club grouuds. The money received will be used to purchase curtains for the club building. After business was adjourned the group had refreshments in the kitchen.

Those visiting Mr. and Mrs. Walker over the holiday were Mr. and Mrs. Jack Walker and children of Waskom, Mr.

and Mrs. Cliff Johnson of Brumley, Mr. and. Mrs. Bill Dacus, Mr.

and Mrs. B. Smith, and Mr. and Mrs. Billy Joe Price and family.

Mrs. Grace Florence, Miss Ara Schrum and Mrs. Rex LaRue spent several days in Dallas last week on business, While there they visited Mrs. Roger Schrum and other friends. Mrs.

Floyd Harrison of Houston spent a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Cox. Raymond McKinney of Dallas is here on business. Mr.

and Mrs. Delbert Chaffin of Dallas were visitors of the Emmit Langfords over the holiday. Those visiting Mr. and Mrs. Ben McWhorler were Mr.

and Mrs. Tommy Graham and children, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Nelson, and children, and and Mrs. Dub Tcmpleton and Ethel, all Duncanville; also Mr.

and Mrs. Roy Nelson, Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Don Pickens and children of Dallas.

Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Buster Swanner over the holiday were Mr. and Mrs. Jackie Stegall and children of Palo Pinto, Mr.

and Mrs. Ran'dol Williams and baby of Marshall, Mr. and Mrs. Charles McNutt and children of Daingerfield, Mr. and Mrs.

Weldon Jones of Pittsburg, Mr. and Mrs. Bill McMullen of Terrell, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Swanner and Mr.

and Mrs. Jake Sutton and children of Gilmer. Rev. Townlin submitted his resignation to the church Sunday. Mr.

and Mrs. Russell Silt- ton have moved to Enon. George Sutton is spending a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Jackie Stegall of Palo Pinto.

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Wilson and children of Sand Spring, Mrs. Myrtle Allen of Gilmer, and Rev. and Mrs.

Futrell Cheshire visited Rev. and Mrs. George Lawler Sunday. Mr. and Mrs.

Bill Lindsey of Longview visited Rev. and Mrs. J. B. Green over the holiday.

David McWhorter of San Diego spent last month with Mr. and Mrs. Ben McWhorter. Zula Garrett visited Mr. and Mrs.

Harry Brooke in Big Sandy last week. Mr. Brooke has employment in Puerto Rico and will leave soon for there. Visiting Rev and Mrs. T.

C. Weatherby over the holi- day were Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Fagan of Troup, Mrs. Rudolph Heard of Big Sandy, Mrs.

J. H. Howell and Charlotte, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Bouknight, Gordon, Roger, and Kay, and Mickey Buchanan.

Hartgoves Sell Nursery Near Diana, Move to Atlanta BY MRS. MAX OLIVER DIANA, Sept. and Mrs. W. R.

Hartgrove have sold their nursery and moved to Atlanta. They moved here a number of years ago from West Texas, to "retire." He had such demand to stay in business, he did, as long as his health permitted. The four greenhouses are being moved. Sgt. and Mrs.

Ronnie Trull and children of Phoenix, Arizona and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Trull of Longview have been visiting with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.

V. Trull. First fall meeting of the New Diana P-TA will be held in the school auditorium Monday, Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. All parents are invited to attend.

The program will be a panel composed of Supt. Harlan Thacker, Norton Lovell, high school principal and Mrs. Charles Narramore, board member, on "Opportunities being offered under the Federal Aid to Education." Mrs. Bob Greer of Killeen MA Degree Is Awarded Leard Jerry L. Leard of Gilmer was among 259 persons who received master's degrees from The University of Texas at the end of the summer session.

Mr. Leard's degree is Master of Education. "I saw it in the Mirror." has been visiting Mrs. Hamp Nobles, and Gloria and Mr. and Mrs.

C. L. Martin. Recent visitors in the home of Mr. and Mrs.

Billy Fleet and children were Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Kirkland, Andy and Cordie; Mrs.

Barbara Rambin and Wendy all of Baytown. Miss Mary Jones has returned to Austin to resume her studies at the University of Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Shearl Martin and Debbie spent the Labor Day week end with their daughter and family, Mr.

THE GILMER MIRROR, Gilmer, Texas Sept. 8, Investigation Begins in Winona City Hall Fire Smith County officers Friday began a full-fledged investigation into a predawn fire which destroyed a Winona city hall-fire station last Wednesday. The investigation includes an audit of books which were rescued from the city hall portion and the giving of polygraph tests to several people.

A state investigator has arrived to assist the investigation. Neal Harris, Tyler fire Marshal, said there were "strong indications of arson" at the scene. The fire destroyed two trucks of the fire department as well as the building itself. The building had been used as a railroad station in the past.
