Wednesday, November 26, 1997 37 DEATHS FUNERALS I MEMORIAL GIFTS LEGAL NOTICES The Sydney Morning Herald OBITUAEIES Dr Hans Forst BARBER. A funeral service for ber 25. 1997. at hospital, dearly loved mother and mother-in-law Dr Carl Hempel 1911-1997 A refugee from Nazism whose diverse contributions to cultural life in Australia continued for almost 60 years, Hans Forst has died in Sydney at the age of 86. One of his last activities was a night at Janacek's opera The Cunning Little Vixen, as music critic for the North Shore Times.

He collapsed the next day, his last musical judgment unwritten, and died last Thursday. To journalists he was best known as The Sydney Morning Herald's librarian from 1946 to 1976. Under his direction, wrote Gavin Souter in Company of Heralds, "the library grew into one of the finest newspaper libraries in the Forst wrote many music reviews for the Herald and other publications, did some film criticism and contributed to the Herald a weekly cryptic crossword and the Mystic Diamond puzzle a little mathematical feature which he had invented. He could visualise a crossword grid in his mind, and would think up many of the clues while walking across the Harbour Bridge to the city. Hans Richard Forst was born to a musical family in Vienna, his aunt an opera singer who performed under Gustav Mahler's baton.

Young Hans learnt the violin, and later- studied com and was made a batman when an officer discovered his talents as a self-taught pianist While still in the army, he worked with Helm-rich on the committee of the Arts Council, with which he remained associated for years. Among journalists, musicians, Herald library staff and others, Forst developed a large group of friends. He was friendly with Patrick White, and translated some English into German for White's book The Eye of the Storm. Patrick was grateful. Forst also did a crossword that drew some of its clues from Patrick White's books.

Patrick was not grateful. Forst identified with Australia from the outset, and never revisited Europe. He never underrated Australian music and culture, and in recent years regarded Australia's contemporary composers as the equal of any. Earlier this year he was found to have cancer, but his social and musical activities were scarcely interrupted until the last weeks. Although he was deeply religious, his death passed without service or ceremony, as he had directed.

His religion had no church. He' is survived in Australia by his companion of many years, Jack Trezise, his cousin from Vienna, Eva Wagner, and a nephew, Richard Greenfield, of Melbourne. position with Anton von Webern. His father, though, insisted that he should study law, so that he could do "something But as soon as he graduated Doctor of Laws in 1934 he became a journalist and music critic on the Vienna newspaper Neues Wiener Tagblatt. The.

Forsts, being Jewish converts to Christianity, were threatened by the spread of Nazism. Searching for a new life outside Europe, Forst sought help from foreign musicians whom he had interviewed as a journalist The Russian bass Alexander Kipnis wrote to a man in Brisbane who nominated Forst as a migrant He reached Australia late in 1938 and settled in Sydney. The Brisbane man later nominated Forst's parents and sister, who went to Adelaide. Hans began his association with the Herald early in the war, monitoring German short-wave radio broadcasts and translating his reports for the paper from his German shorthand notes. Two people who befriended him were Edgar Bainton, the director of the Conservatorium, and the singer Dorothy Heimlich, the moving spirit in the formation of the Arts Council of Australia.

He went bushwalking with Bainton every weekend. Forst was naturalised quickly, served in the Australian Army, 1905-1997 His rigorously empirical approach to scientific logic was at the centre of American scholarly writing on the philosophy of science for several decades. Dr Carl G. Hempel (usually known as Peter), who has died aged 92, taught at Princeton University from 1955 to 1973, becoming the Stuart Professor of Philosophy. He was the last surviving member of the Vienna Circle, a group of philosophers who loathed the irrational and mystical thinking of late 19th-century Europe and, in reaction, advocated what they called "logical which argued that whatever could not be verified by experience was meaningless.

They sought to apply the methods of the natural sciences and mathematics to the work of philosophers, stirring heated controversy. Hempel was born in Germany and studied mathematics, physics and philosophy at the universities of Goettingen, Heidelberg, Vienna and Berlin, where he received a doctorate in 1934 for work on probability under Hans Reichenbach, a founder of the philosophy of logical empiricism. Hempel's empirical approach surfaced early; after he crashed his bicycle into a lamppost as a boy and suffered concussion, he resolved never to drive a car. He fled Nazism, moving to Belgium and, in 1938, to the United States. His writings were so influential that for decades almost any rival theory of scientific explanation took his work as a point of departure.

Hempel reckoned that all the sciences could be understood under a single setxf general laws. In 1948 he produced his deductive nomological theory, which holds that scientific conclusions are best deduced using logic and a larger law, or nomos in Greek. He built a precise mathematical foundation for explaining statistical, or probabilistic, answers. For example, if a patient asks a doctor about the chance of a cure, the doctor's explanation may be given as a probability that in a given percentage of cases, there is a cure. A second area of Hempel's work dealt with how scientists gain confidence in a hypothesis in the first place.

He developed models of the philosophy of confirmation in which a hypothesis is confirmed not only by findings but also by being in accord with larger principles, such as historical or functional explanations. He is survived by his second wife, Diane, a son, Peter, and a daughter, Miranda. His first wife, Eva, died in 1944. The New York Times Desmond Oliver Professor Sir George Pickering, the Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford. In 1967, with Dr John Ledingham, Oliver set up the renal unit at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford.

There he oversaw the development of the largest home dialysis program in Europe. Oliver was a founder member and patron of the Kidney Patients' Association. He retired from the Churchill as the clinical director of the renal unit in 1995. He is survived by his wife, Sheila. 1930-1997 A rugby player who went on to pioneer treatment for renal failure, Desmond Oliver has died aged 66.

He was born in Palmer-ston North, New Zealand, and qualified as a doctor at the University of Otago in 1955. His rugby career reached its peak during the All Blacks tour of 1953-54, when he won caps as a loose forward against Ireland and France and scored four tries. During that tour he decided to live in England. He worked under One of Oliver's patients was John Parsons, the tennis correspondent of The Daily Telegraph in London, who underwent a kidney transplant at the Churchill in 1982. John Parsons writes: Des Oliver was an archetypal gentle giant in stature, in the way he clearly loved life, and in his ability to restore life to others.

He was not simply brilliant in his chosen field of medicine; he offered comfort and reassurance to patients, many of them in despair at their suddenly bleak future. Hope and confidence, the first two essentials for rehabilitation, were quickly restored within them. It was certainly so in my case. Together with Professor Sir Peter Morris, the director of the transplant unit, Oliver was the driving force of a renal centre that developed an unmatched standard of patient welfare. He and his staff laboured to ensure that those who were waiting for transplants, or who were not suitable for surgery, could lead as normal a life as possible.

They introduced holiday caravans equipped for dialysis. In 1985 there were newspaper reports that Oliver had refused to continue dialysis for a patient whose problems extended beyond kidney failure, and whose behaviour was upsetting other patients. The criticism hurt him deeply and offended the thousands who had benefited from the professionalism and care of a unit of which they had all grown proud.
