He went on to become chairman of the Group and acknowledged as an outstanding leader of Australian business as well as a caring and thoughtful employer. In 1992 he was awarded an Order of Australia. An intensely private man who declined to be credited with most of his charitable activities, Saunders enjoyed skiing and woodchopping.

However, he made a rare public appearance in May 1995 on the eve of the 50th anniversary of VE Day. In the Sydney Opera House, he hosted a special "50th memorial tribute" for about 2,000 people celebrating the liberation of the Nazi camps. It was, he observed, the last occasion on which a major commemoration of the liberation would be possible while some of the survivors were still alive. John Saunders married twice. The death of his first wife left him a widower.

His second marriage ended in divorce. He is survived by three children: Betty, Mark and Monica. planning stage, it was proposed that it should be called Camp Saunders. Saunders gently but firmly opposed this idea, saying simply that it was Apart from his achievements at HopeTown, Saunders was a driving force behind the formation in Dar-linghurst of the Sydney Jewish Museum, of which he became the founding chairman. The museum is a repository of Australian Jewish history as well as the history of the Holocaust.

In one respect it differs from other such museums around the world. Because Australia has a higher proportion of Holocaust survivors than any other country except Israel, the museum incorporates a special section recording the contribution such survivors have made to their adopted country. John Saunders was born in Hungary on November 23, 1922. Incarcerated with other Hungarian Jews by the Nazis, he was 21 when he was eventually liberated from Dornau concentration camp at the end of the war. Soon after arriving in Sydney, he met Frank Lowy, who first became his partner in the delicatessen and later in the birth of Westfield Holdings, one of Australia's foremost shopping centre developers.

In 1984 Saunders sold a considerable part' of his share 1922-1997 As a migrant survivor of the Holocaust, John Saunders, who has died at his Point Piper home aged 75, was assured by people who greeted him in Australia in 1950 that he had come to a land of opportunity. He was to discover that reality surpassed all expectations. Starting with a half-share in a Blacktown delicatessen, Saunders achieved wealth, recognition and influence as a business and property tycoon. Perhaps lesser known were his major philanthropic activities, notably the establishment of HopeTown School, a special school for handicapped teenagers set on 40 hectares on the NSW Central Coast. The school provides mildly intellectually and emotionally handicapped young people sometimes overlooked in the education system with intensive, personalised programs to "lift their self-esteem and social and communication thus enabling them to return to mainstream schools or the community.

In 1986 Saunders the co-founder of Westfield Holdings Limited and later chairman of the Terrace Tower Group of Companies contributed $1 million towards the foundation of the school. New Directions, lived, for a while, in a cottage in Connecticut, then moved to New York, where it operates now, still alert to some of the best writing in and outside America. It is far harder for a firm such as New Directions to exist in the current literary philistin-ism than it was in 1936. His inheritance came from a family business in iron and steel, the country's fourth-largest steel manufacturer. It was based in Pittsburgh, where Laughlin was born. As a boy, he decided that he did not want to join the firm; but he was always grateful for his expensive freedom.

"None of this New Directions would have been possible," he said in 1992, "without the industry of my ancestors, the canny Irishmen who immigrated in 1824 from County Down. I bless them with every breath." Laughlin was more than a cheque book. His literary talent was what made him a great publisher. At Harvard, he fed his devotion to Pound and Eliot by studying Italian and Latin and ran away from Harvard to visit Pound in Italy 1914-1997 He was every writer's dream. James Laughlin, who has died at 83, inherited a large fortune and wanted only to spend it on precarious literary experiments.

He founded the publishing company New Directions and was from 1936 onwards the chief engine of literary modernism in America and therefore in English. He was the "eminence blanche" of American letters modest, enabling, fastidious in taste, daring in deed, gentle in combat. Many came to rely on the black and white paperbacks of New Directions for their mental picture, not only of American modernism but of avant-garde (or just difficult) writing From several languages. Among many others, Laughlin published Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, Delmore Schwartz, Celine, and Nabokov's first two books in English. He gave modernist writing a kick-start in the late 1930s but was daring to the end of his life, expanding his list with writers such as Henry Green, Ray reauired to send particulars of their western Highway.

There she worked at John Murray's and Chatto Windus, then at Oxford University Press. But when that publisher closed its offices in London, Carver declined to move to Oxford. Remaining in London, she worked with various publishers, including Victor Gol-lancz, and in the 1980s joined Trianon Press in Paris before returning to London.

No immediate family members survive her.
