It's advertised in our free weekly news paper, Tne Realtor" (Circulation ring 439 4733 first OR 439 possibly a biographical description of Simon Gray's own life even though I'm sure he'd deny it if I asked him." He hopes his audiences will accept the vast change of character but feels there is a risk that they won't.

Mr Wyngarde is an impeccable dresser and in 1970 he won the John Stephen fashion award for the distinction of being Britain's best-dressed man. "I've won three awards." he corrected me, "for being the best-dressed man in England, Europe and Germany." After a remark like that, one can't think of a suitable answer except for a meek, timid and somewhat indistinct "Congratulations!" Considering he started out as a $18-a-week stage sweeper in a repertory company, Peter has done well for himself. His father wanted him to be a lawyer but Peter's inability to "swot" sent him back to the confines of the theatre and his father to a point of despair. Shakespeare Determined to make a go of an acting career he eventually graduated to provincial theatre companies; became one of England's leading Shakespearian actors; played Cyrano de Bergerac ft the Bristol Old Vic; became director of the same company and moved on to the London Old Vic. From there came New York, motion pictures and television.

And you know the rest. Peter Wyngarde has no special favourites when speaking of his various roles. "One enjoys everything. One has to else one begins to turn sour," he says. Peter's great wish is to do a musical ever though he admits that he is not the greatest singer in the world.

But he declares that even Rex Harrison managed to get away with his "singing" in "My Fair Lady." "Perhaps I could fake it and be a poor man's Rex Harrison," he quips. His biggest regret? "I married far too young. I should have waited until I was much older," he said. "It lasted three years and the last year was pretty hell. However, one just goes on learning from one's mistakes doesn't one?" r-.

Peter Wyngarde "an actor is a bit of a schizophrenic." The Sydney Morning Herald TO PROGRAMS voice. And don't laugh it was terrible." Peter Wyngarde was hestitant at first about adopting the role of Jason King as he usually became bored with a role after five or six months. "I was never bored with Jason," he said, "but I don't really know if I will be able to cope witU him for much longer." Peter Wyngarde is in Melbourne to star in a stage production of "But-ley" a British comedy hit written by Simon Gray. Instead of playing the winner, he plays a born loser a man who is jaded, bored and alcoholic as well. "But ley is quite different to Jason," he told me.

"He is a London University lecturer who is uncool and neurotic whereas Jason was quite cool. From reading the play I have come to the conclusion that it is TrW in all directions 7100 is constantly BONDI: New Dmestic Electronics. SPECIALISING IN AFTER HRS. Day. Niaht Service.

"When you're 30 years and over, one has to be," lie says, "otherwise there's nothing much left." I spoke with Peter recently to find out if he was anything like the character in the ATN 7's series a continuation of his role in "Department "We are accused of being alike by people who have met us both," he said. "After all, an actor is a bit of a schizophrenic and schizophrenia is a marvellous outlet for an actor consequently a bit of the character would rub off. Actually I believe Jason is an extension of my own personality." When the series first came to mind, the character Peter was to play was a teetering old con called Rogeir Cullingford an idea that didn't tally with the flamboyant Mr Wyn-garde's personality and imagination. So he invented Jason a more modish figure and a successful writer of crime stories who also managed to solve crimes as though they were straight out of his books. Sex symbol Jason King is a man very sure of himself.

He doesn't even carry a gun. He is overly fickle he flirts with all the precocity of a schoolboy, and has not the slightest intention of being true to any one woman. One would assume by his actions and his outrageous apparel that Jason King could love nobody but himself. A sex symbol he may be, but often such symbols turn out to be conceited, egotistical bores. In real life, while some of the traits of Jason may show through, Peter Wyngarde is neither conceited nor a bore.

He is a thoroughly charming and vibrantly witty man. He is very self confident, ever smiling and looks rather mischievous due to the prominent laugh lines that crease near his eyes. His brown hair is long and wavy with side burns cultivated during his role as a Tartar in Anton Che-kov's play "The Duel" and he has a capsized a I e-bar moustache which tops off an air of sophistication. I asked Peter if it were true that in real life he was also an avid writer. "Guilty," he said.

"I also wrote all the dialogue for Jason. Well I had to as they originally had him as the type of man who'd use expressions like 'my dears' and 'old boys' and it was all terribly camp. But Jason is not camp he is high-camp and that is what saves him. "In France when they dubbed him they decided that Jason couldn't be anything but camp so they gave him a high-pitched 1 5 i 1 It's as simple as that. If anyone can find you a buyer, we can.

the indefatigable twosome was hitting the Hollywood pavements with a sound so refreshing and upbeat that the music industry could only respond by frowining apologetically: 'With today's raucous hard rock market, it just won't sell.
