At the same time, the Australian Medical Association appointed five doctors to its campaign to stamp out smoking. The Government's decision was made unanimously at a meeting of Government MLAs. NSW is the third State after Victoria and Western Australia to decide on warnings on cigarette packs.

South Australia has said it will go ahead with health warnings if three other States do the same. The newly formed Labor Government in Tasmania has indicated that it MJ.7S tar level in cigarette smoke and a maximum nicotine level in cigarette tobacco. Doctors should not smoke in public, in patients' homes or during consultations. Smoking should be banned at formal sessions at medical meetings. Announcing the committee's appointment, the Victorian president of the AMA, Dr Champion de Crespigny, said the committee would study the SA proposals and federal council would put its recommendations into effect.

The United States and Britain already require health warnings on cigarette packets. In Melbourne yesterday the Australian Medical Association appointed a committee of five Victorian experts to investigate the country's smoking problems. The committee, all doctors, will play a major role will require health warning labels, and Queensland is expected to follow.
