Newcastle, formed the most lethal partnership in Australian soccer with Alf Quill, his teammate at Wallsend.

In those days the Newcastle competition, boosted by British connections to the coal-mining industry, was the strongest in the country. Date and Quill were its finest exponents. They had two spells together at Wallsend (1937-43 and 1948-49), and set records which are unlikely to ever be broken. In a senior career which spanned 19 years, Date finished with 664 goals. Quill, 1 1 years his senior, did even better: 868 goals over 24 years in first grade.

Arguments as to who was the better player still rage, but perhaps the words of soccer historian Sid Grant should be taken into account: "Reg Date was the greatest Australian-born player ever, and the greatest drawcard in the game." Often there would be four or five trams waiting outside the old Crystal Palace ground at Wall-send, disgorging fans who would stand five deep at the perimeter. During the war, teams from Sydney and Wollongong would go to Newcastle for inter-city games, and it was from one such match that Harry Hetherington, a player from the same era who is perhaps best equipped to judge the talents of Date, drew his favourite moment "Corrimal came up to play Wallsend, and it had been pouring all day," he said. "In those days we played with those big leather balls with the stitching, so you can imagine how heavy it was. I was standing Wartime heroes Reg Date, above; funeral. "He was the greatest I've ever seen," Hetherington said.

There were other great moments in the decade. In cricket, the 1948 Invincibles were to establish themselves in the game's folklore by becoming the only Australian team to return from a tour to England undefeated. Fl was this series which sig nalled the retirement of Don Bradman. Needing just four LI runs in the final Test at The Oval to finish with a career average of 100, Bradman was so overcome with the emotional response he received when he walked to the crease that he played the second ball he faced from leg-spinner Eric Hollies onto his stumps and was bowled for a duck. Bradman's return to the Test arena had been in great doubt when the war ended he had enlisted in the RAAF at the start of hostilities but because of chronic fibrocitis eventually with medals, with high-jumper John Winter and sculler Merv Wood the heroes.

Football's role in a war-ravaged decade was curious. Both the rugby league competition, the Sydney premiership, and the Australian football competition, the Victorian Football League (VFL), continued to be played, although with some disruption. In the VFL, Geelong were forced onto the sidelines for two seasons (1942 and 1943) because of travel restrictions, while several VFL grounds were utilised for the war effort. But the war's major effect was loss of life: five members of Melbourne's triumphant 1939 team died during the conflict The Demons and Essendon dominated the VFL competition, each winning the flag three times. But it was the 1945 grand final, the bloodbath between Carlton and South Melbourne before 62,000 fans at Princes Park, which would go down in history for its violence.

In rugby league, Balmain were TODAY'S SPORT SCOREBOARD AUSTRALIA INDIA MONDAY, September 4, 1939, Prime Minister Robert Men-zies made a fateful announcement over the airwaves. "It is my melancholy duty to inform you, officially, that Great Britain has declared war upon her Germany and that, as a consequence, Australia is also at -war." It was an event which would not only shape the 1940s, but the decades which would follow. For the second time in 20 years the world was at war, and Australian troops would be required to take up arms. The entry of Japan into War World II two years after Menzies's broadcast brought the conflagration even closer to home. Bombs landed on Darw in and mini-submarines invaded Sydney Harbour.

Most sports made the decision that they remained important to the national psyche. Football games continued to be played, the Melbourne Cup continued to be run, Walter Lindrum hit the headlines by scoring 100 billiard points in 46 seconds, and Arthur Dustan caused much mirth by winning a cycling race riding backwards. Some sporting heroes, notably Keith Miller, volunteered for service, while others were conscripted. Those left often competed before record crowds. People were starved of distractions.

But perhaps the sporting icon of the decade was one of its least known. Reg Date, a miner from the Stockrington No 1 colliery near BASKETBALL NBA (home team in CAPS) INDIANA 101 New York 90. I wouldn't have believed it unless I saw it with my own eyes." Date's reputation spread, and twice he was asked to travel to Britain.

Glasgow Rangers and Manchester United were both keen on his signature, but Date ignored the advances. With his work and his soccer, he was making a fortune perhaps 100 in a good week. In Britain, he would have received one-tenth of that. And so Date stayed in Australia, playing just eight times for the national team in official Tests, but many more times in unofficial internationals. For a player whose approach to training was usually a couple of laps of the oval before retiring to the nearest pub, his longevity was astounding.

He was a natural athlete who also declined several offers to play rugby league. Perhaps the fact he did little away from the penalty area had something to do with it. It was inside the box that he came to life his crowning glory came when he scored nine times in a single match against Weston. Date was a character enjoying a drink, a chat, and more often than not, a wager. After the war he owned a succession of hotels in Newcastle, where his generosity became legendary.

Australia had won the Cup in 1939, but the trophy was kept in a bank vault in Melbourne until peace returned, bringing with it the American team led by Jack Kramer to Kooyong in 1 946. The Americans regained the Cup, and went on to win it four years in succession, beating an Australian team led by aging doubles pair John Brom-wich and Adrian Quist on each occasion. But the Australians, with Frank Sedgman at the vanguard, were making rapid progress, and as the 1950s dawned so did the golden age of Australian tennis, with Sedgman, Lew Hoad, Ashley Cooper and Neale Fraser creating a dynasty which would last for the next two decades. Meanwhile, the 1948 Olympics, the first since the notorious 1936 Games held in Berlin, proved moderately successful for Australia. When the war ended, a Victory Series for charity was arranged to be played in England between the home side and an Australian Services XI and, even though it was not afforded official Test status, crowds flocked to the grounds.

The series finished 2-2, and was memorable for the moment in the first match when Australian skipper Lindsay Hassett threw the ball to Flying Officer Keith Miller, and asked him to bowl. The career of perhaps Australia's greatest all-rounder had begun. Bradman's, of course, -was coming to an end but not before he made a lie of his health problems and returned to the Test side for the 1946-47 series against the touring English, scoring 234 in a world-record partnership of 468 with Sid Barnes. For the historians, however, it was the 1943 grand final which remains especially memorable it was the last of Newtown's three titles, and the last time North Sydney appeared in the title-decider.

Ironically, the Bears skipper on the day, Frank Hyde, had begun his career with the Bluebags. In rugby union, the Wallabies struggled to get on top of their nemesis, the All Blacks, after an eight-year hiatus. In 1946 and 1947 they met four times, with New Zealand winning all four. But the Wallabies extracted some sort of revenge in 1949, when a team captained by Trevor Allan and including Rex Mossop and Nicholas Shehadie was sent to Wellington to play a one-off Test and won 11-6 at Athletic Park. The fact that another, stronger All Blacks side was playing in South Africa at the same time did not, in the eyes of the Australian players, detract from their achievement PI Speedweek SKY RACING Thoroughbreds Warwick Farm, Sandown, Eagle Farm, Cheltenham, Pinjarra.
