He designed big public housing developments like Geelong's Newtown estate, and oversaw the design of woolstores for Elder Smith Company and Dennys Las-celles. His work on schools and hospitals was widely recognised, and he designed many private residences. In 1930, with two fellow architects, John Buchan and Langham Proud, Laird founded a club aimed at promoting fellowship and community service among young businessmen in Geelong.

Known originally as the Young Men's Business Club of Geelong, the name was changed in 1931 to become the Apex Club. Laird designed the badge that has come to represent Apex internationally. In 1935, Laird and Buchan became partners. The two men would guide the firm successfully through Victoria's most prolific period of expansion and development. When, in the postwar years, Buchan wanted to open a Melbourne office, Laird stayed in Geelong to maintain the firm's position as the preeminent regional practice in the State.

Laird married Effie Cant, a member of the practice, in 1936. Their marriage was to endure for more than half a century until her death in 1987. Laird is survived by their three children, Craig, Heather and Alison. Nicholas Walter ground Trust; a member of the Federal-State Government Trust for 1 1 years, and for five years the chairman of the International Sporting Events Council. Tennis was his passion; he was thoroughly grounded in competitive tennis as a youngster and was a ranked player for seven years.

He reached the quarter-final of one Australian Open and was Sydney metropolitan grasscourt and hardcourt champion in 1958 and 1959. One of his greatest successes came from his foresight in perceiving the possibilities of a top-class indoor tennis event Two leading Australian tennis players at the time, Fred Stolle and John Newcombe, on a flight from the US spent several hours considering the merits of an indoor tennis tournament in Sydney. They took the idea to Lovett, who saw the potential: the Australian Indoor Tennis Championship became an important part of the Australian tennis circuit Through his ability to entice many of the world's best, including John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Jimmy Connors and others, the Australian Indoor became a key tournament on the world tennis circuit It began at the Hordern Pavilion in 1973, but switched to the Sydney Entertainment Centre before winding up in 1994. Lovett was a member of the inaugural board of the Association of Tennis Professionals Tour after he was elected to the Men's Tennis Council, the governing body of world professional tennis. He was a member of the NSW Tennis Association Council for 15 years, an executive committee member for 10 years, a vice-president for five years and a Architect, Apex co-founder 1906-1999 The last of the founders of the Apex community organisation, the renowned Geelong architect Ewen Laird, has died aged 92.

Laird knew from the age of eight he wanted to become an architect, following in the footsteps of his father, John Angus Laird, the founder of Laird Buchan, which grew to become the Buchan Group, Australia's largest architectural practice. A student at Geelong Grammar School, Ewen Campbell Laird spent his weekends visiting building sites with his father. The practice was a leading force in regional Victoria, responsible for many of the prominent buildings of Geelong and the Western District. Laird studied architecture at Geelong's Gordon Institute in 1925, and in 1929 went to the University of Melbourne. He began his professional association with Laird Buchan while still a student, but later worked for other practices before undertaking an extensive overseas study trip.

His travels exposed him to modern European design such as that practised by the German Bauhaus school, which was a strong influence throughout his career. He also travelled widely in the US. Laird rejoined Laird Buchan on his return to Geelong in 1934. Among his more notable projects in the early years were the Geelong Grammar Music School, a project won in a competition in 1937; and the Pilkington glass factory in Melbourne Road, Geelong, recogni- Sports all-rounder 1936-1999 Sport and business have produced many outstanding performers, but few could match the remarkable success achieved by Graham Lovett, who has died aged 63 after a long, private battle, against cancer. Graham Gordon Lovett, a man of considerable vision, established himself as an outstanding consultant and administrator in an array of sports.

There never was any doubt that Lovett would be a success in sport and business. He became assistant State manager of the Dunlop sportsgoods division at 23; he was appointed State manager four years later. These were stepping stones to his climb up the company ladder. He was appointed general manager of Dunlop Slazenger in 1975, when he was 39, and managing director the following year. In 1982, Lovett founded Sport Australia, and his talents began to blossom.

He would be acknowledged as one of the most powerful and respected sporting figures in Australia, his reputation as good in Europe and the US as it was at home. Lovett was involved in the Olympics, tennis, rugby league, swimming, cricket, basketball, triathlon, squash, and even rodeo. For the two critical years leading to the selection of Sydney for the 2000 Olympics, he-was a member of the SOCOG board and an executive member of Sydney Olympics 2000 Bid Limited and a member of the Sports Commission from 1995 until his death. Lovett was tournament director of the Queensland Open for five years, the Kuala Lumpur Open 'and the NSW Open for two years, and the president of the International Tournament Directors' Association for six years. His role in swimming was as a marketing and television consultant for the World Championships in Perth in 1991 and 1998, and in Rome in 1994. In rugby league, he was a member of the NSWRL board and chairman of the marketing and sponsorship committee from 1983 until 1994. In cricket, he was a member of the advisory committee of the NSW Cricket Association and marketing consultant to the Bradman Museum. Outside sport, he chaired the Sydney Eye Hospital Foundation, which raised $10 million in the past 12 years towards the development of the Eye Hospital Championship with Tennis Australia.

Lovett is survived by his wife, Beverley, and their daughter, Belinda. Their son, David, died from a heart attack eight months ago. Lovett's memorial service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday at St James's Church, King Street, Sydney. As a writer He was diagnosed as a manic depressive, one of the reasons given for a threat he made against President Richard Nixon in 1972, for which he was jailed.

His professional life suffered as a result, but he attempted several comebacks. Raw Deal, a film he wrote in 1986 for Arnold Schwarzenegger, flopped. But in 1996 his play Forgive Me, Forgive Me Not was staged in Los Angeles. Wexler is survived by two daughters. Michael Freedland The Guardian, London pointed out, he "had a knack for writing characters with a little dirt under their Wexler never did it better than in Serpico, one of the first films to show detectives who did not wear trilby hats, pressed suits and shiny shoes.
