Started cautiously and then took control or the bowling with shots to all parts of the ground.

2: THOMAS (P): Clever exhibition of slow bowling to restrict and then dismiss opposition batsmen in taking 5p41. 1: MOSS (G): Arrived at the wicket with the innings in disarray at 4-40. He then combined stubborn resistance and aggressive control in giving his team a moderate total to bowl at. Scored 46 which included one six and six fours. MOSMAN EASTERN SUBURBS At Allan Border Oval Williams, Taufel 3: HAYWOOD (M): Scored 64 in 143 minutes with six fours and twc sixes.

A very good display of straight hitting complemented by some well timed square shots. 2: LEE (M): Scored 56 in 106 minutes with three fours and two sixes and he also took 2-21 from eight overs. Although he gave a few chances while batting, it was a very good all-round performance by a captain who was leading by example. 1: ALLEY (M): Bowled 20 overs with three maidens and took 3-55. Bowled within himself and extracted good swing and was the backbone of his side's attack.

BANKSTOWN-C'BURY SYDNEY UNI At Bankstown Hughes, A Morgan 3: WAUGH (BC): Played the match on a plane above beginning the day with a catch of typical bnlliance and finishing the day with a polished 78 not out in 137 minutes. 2: FREEDMAN (BC): Wreaked havoc with Sydney University's middle order, taking 4-37 from 11 overs of fine control and subtle variation. 1: DAVISON (SU): Fought hard to hold his side's innings together after early losses, top scoring with a typically gritty 49 in 151 minutes. NTHN DISTRICT UNIVERSITY OF NSW At Asquith Furtner, Cameron 3: SLATER (UNSW): A typical early season pitch devoid of bounce and lacking in pace waS not enough to prevent Slater flaying the Northern District attack to all parts of the ground. His 152 in as many balls included 16 fours and four sixes including one incredible cut for six.

He was dismissed trying to smash a ball over the longest part of the ground only ten runs short of victory. A truly great innings in a high scoring match. 2: A SAINSBURY (ND): The Northern District innings revolved around this knock and on another day it would have been the highlight of the match. His innings featured many cuts and drives as he blasted his way to his century. 1: DIXON (UNSW): His determination to win after a turbulent off season showed through in his batting.

In partnership with Slater he was determined to ensure his side would overhaul the imposing Northern District total. His 50 in their combined effort of over 150 set up victory for the students. CAMPBELLTOWN BALMAIN At Raby 1 Lill, A Kingsford-SmKh 3: BURKE (C): Gutsed it out for 95 not out including eight fours and two sixes in 159 minutes. After a patient start he unleashed a dazzling array of shots to tame the Tigers' attack. 2: SUTHERLAND (C): Confirmed his reputation as Australia's most promising spin bowler with tantalising control of length and line, taking 5-81 from 24 mesmerising overs.

1: ELLIOTT (B): Played a doggedly determined innings of 70 lasting three hours and proved the mainstay of the Balmain innings. 31 West Bromwich 10 5 3 2 12 9 18 Charlton 9 5 1 3 20 14 16 Park Rangers 10 5 1 4 13 16 16 Sheffield United 7 4 3 0 9 3 15 Port Vale 10 4 2 4 13 13 14 Birmingham 9 4 2 3 12 7 14 Middlesbrough 7 4 2 1 12 7 14 Stoke 9 4 2 3 10 10 14 Sunderland 10 4 1 5 14 15 13 Wolverhampton 10 3 4 3 12 12 13 Norwich 10 4 1 5 8 17 13 Stockport 10 3 3 4 16 13 12 Crewe 9 4 0 5 13 14 12 Bury 10 2 5 3 11 14 11 Tranmere 10 3 1 6 14 14 10 Oxford United 10 3 1 6 14 16 10 Reading 10 3 1 6 10 18 10 Manchester City 9 2 3 4 16 13 9 Ipswich 8 2 3 3 10 11 9 Portsmouth 10 2 2 6 12 17 8 Huddersfield 9 0 4 5 5 14 4 DIVISION TWO Bristol Rovers 1 Wrexham 0, Burnley 2 Wycombe 2, Chesterfield 1 Bournemouth 1, Fulham 3 Oldham 1, Gillingham 2 Bristol City 0, Grimsby 2 Wigan 1, Luton 0 Watford 4, Millwall 2 Blackpool 1, Preston 2 Brentford 1, Southend 0 Northampton 0, Walsall 3 Carlisle 1, York 1 Plymouth 0.
