starting for the fair Mr McCauley had paid 5250 to a man lie had carried this money in the same pocket GRINDLEY CHOICE AS COUNCIL HEAD Eighth Ward Aiderman Picked by Republican Members for Presiding Officer DENIES HE PROMISED PLACES ON COMMITTEES Caucus Called' for Next Election as Move to Try to Defeat Him Was Made Aid John Grlndley of th Eighth ward was unanimously chosen to succeed Aid William Gutman of the Third ward as president of the council during the coming calendar year at a caucus of the Republican aidermen yesterday By the same unanimous vote Aid Joseph Theisen of the Eleventh ward was chosen to succeed Grindley as pres ident pro tem and Aid Glinnan and Lodge were re elected as per manent chairman and secretary respectively of the Republican caucus Aid Grindley who has an ambi tion to preside over the council for a term had more than enough votes pledged to his support months ago but a movement to beat him origi nated with certain members of the council to wium he had refused to make pledges of committee ap pointments or that reason his friends thought it best to call the caucus at once and settle the mat ter There were 14 of the aider men present Glinnan Gutman ield Schultz Allan Walsh Harp fer Lodge Thompson Brozo Mc Carty Owen Grindley and Theisen Aid Gutman had the proxies of Aid Koenig and Vernor and Aid EUls sent word that he would stand by any action on the subject taken by the caucus so that the election of Grindley is assured An afternoon paper had published a story to the effect that Grindley was to be chosen as the result of clique rule in the council and inti mating that he had secured the honor by promises of desirable committee appointments The inti mation was denounced In speeches by Aid Allan Gutman Harpfcr Glinnan Owen Lodge Brozo Walsh and others who stated In the most emphatic language they could command that they had neither asked nor received any promise of any sort from Grindley Collectively they paid him as hlglj a tribute for integrity and fait dealing as any member of the council ever got and they told him to go and forget the silly yarn that he had purchased the honor with promises Grindley insisted on saying a word in his own behalf before th? vote and he said that only two of the 36 members of the council had asked him for a committee place and he had refused to give the slightest assurance to either of them He intimated that whatever else they get they will not get the places they asked for GOES TO JAH AT EAST Gregory Larkins Convicted of En tering Store in Nighttime Both divisions of the court were In session late yesterday afternoon The chief feature of the day was the convic tion of Gregory Larkins in Judge court He was found guilty of trying to enter a store during the night or several years the police have been trying to send Larkins to jail tie is a member of a gang of cocaine fiends who long have been the bane of the life of the officers in the central precinct Judge Connolly will sen tence him in a ew days John Neumann was found guilty in Judge court of holding up Michael Herczese and robbing hnn of a small sum of money Judge Connolly sentenced Leo Dlngeman to serve from two two and one half years for grand larceny Mil ton Bass who was convicted of larceny a few days ago was sent to the work house for six months TEAGAN SERIOUSLY ILL Physicians and Relatives Watch at Bedside ot Peace Justice Physicians watched by the bed side of Justice of the Peace John Teagan last night until a late hour fearing that the recurrence of an old malady lesion of the heart which caused hint to leave his court room riday would result fatallv According to members ot the Justice Teagan Is threatened with a collapse of the heart but If he escapes that he will recover riday in his courtroom in the county building Justice Teagan felt so Ill that he called his physician Dr John Jacob who advised him to go home This he did Since then the struggle for life has been a hard one but his HOMANN IS DEAD Albert Schmidt Informed of His Death in Germany Information was received yester day by Albert Schmidt ot the death of Max Ludwig Hofmann at laMpsig Germany September 19 Mr Hofmann married Alma Schmidt a daughter of the late Traugott Schmidt of this city He was a well known dealer In wool nnd lived at Ieipsig with offices In London and Australia The cable gram stated that death resulted from an operation Mrs mother her brother Edward Schmidt and brother in law Hugo Scherer of Detroit are at present In Lelpslg They expected to accompany Mr and Mrs Hofmann on an automo bile
