Buffalo Launched at Ecorse just as a sister ship the Duluth paused in her uplake trip at the pnj of the slip the signal was given ropes cut and Miss Sue Hyt cracked the time honored bottle of wine on the stem of the Rochester the ponderous hull glid ing almost noiselessly down the ways and dropping into the water The launching was perfect in ry detail and the coincidence that a sister ship of exactly the lines should be there to join in the welcome made the occasion Il the more pleasant The Rochester is a packet freighter for the Western Transit coinjany of Buffalo and intended for service from that port to Du luth or Chicago as thfe demand may run Her keel was laid at the ilnat Lakes Engineering Works in jh orse three months ago now she floats and it is expected that she will start on her maiden trip by Vovember 15 The boat is 400 feet in length 50 foot beam and 30 feet fepth calcu lated to carry 6500 tons andwith her Quadruple expansion engine to do about thirteen and a half miles the steamer Pleasure yesterday as guests of the Detroit Shipbuilding Co to see the launching of the steamer Edwin Oiil building for Becker of The party which left the Wood ward avenue dock at 10:30 an the ferry steamer was made up uf II Becker with Cleveland and Pittsburg friends Captain and Mrs1 Westcott the latter sponsor for the new boat with a large num ber of friends and officers of the lMrrit Shipbuilding Co everything was in perfect readi ness when the Wyandotte yards were reached There a mo delay after the dozen per sons in whose ihands rested the ceremony of the i day had mounted the launching stjand Mrs West ott carried a monster bouquet of pink roses She grasped the rib bon twined bottle of name giving uine and as the trigger moved and the great boat slid evenly from the ways she broke the bottle on the vessel's stem Immediately after the launching t'i steamer was taken in tow by tugs and brought up to the Orleans street dock of the shipbuilding com pany It is expected she will be rcadv for her maiden trip by Oc tober 20 when she will go into tile ore and coal trade She has a ton nage of 7500 is 440 feet long 54 feet beam and 30 feet deep Capt Chilson will command her The steamer Pleasure returned un der heck to the city and while en route the guests partook of lunch which had been spread meanwhile on the lower deck An orchestra supplied music both going and com Cleveland OOD IS INSUICIENT iremen on Government Dredge Strike for More to Eat Holland September 28 The firemen on the United States dredge General Gillespie quit work at Saugatuck yester iky claiming that the food furnished them was insufficient and of poor qual ity The dredge has been brought to Holland to await a new crew or up if necessary Abandon Launch Michigan City September A thirty font gasoline launch with canopy top was found by the lifesavers today at anchor thirteen miles west of this city Thee was no one aboard the craft and but one strand of anchor line held the boat from going ashore In the heavy sea that was running The launch was brought here to await Its owner The boat is believed to have been abondoned last riday by people from Chicago who reached shore in a ran 1 The outfit tallies with the descrip tion of a launch which was seen to pass bre riday afternoon The boat was not damaged uneral to Be Held Today Port Huron September 28 The re mains of red Thomas the Port Huron hoy who died at the Marine hospital in Buffalo riday morning have arrived in this city and the funeral will be held Sunday afternoon under the auspices of the class of 1906 of the Port Huron High school of which the deceased was a member Thomas was only 20 years old and was learning to bean engineer He was a member of the crew of the steam er Brazil and very popular among his fellow employes Capt Drake Dead Buffalo September 28 Capt Drake died tonight from the ef fects of an operation He was 0 years old and sailed the lakes until a few years ago when he opened a vessel agency Has Captain John Randall by reason of the loss of the steamer Alex Nimick in Lake Superior or September 21 1907 and Whereas Said John Randall has been the captain of the steamer Merrimac until very recently" and is well and most favorably known by' all the officers and crew of said steamer and Whereas said John Randall was a Very careful courteous and able sea man and officer and was dearly beloved by all with whom he came in contact therefore be it Resolved That we the officers and crew of said steamer Merrimac do each feel the loss as a personal one and sin cerely regret the sad bereavement that' his come to his family in the death of so capable and courteous an officer That our sympathy is hereby extended to his wife and family And that as a testimonial of the high regard in September 28 The grain trade took quite a brace during the week but there is little change in the ore and coal freight situation It is expected however that there will be a better movement of coal next week Grain car goes are offered pretty freely at Duluth at 2 cents on wheat to Buffalo Schooner Westcott Waterlogs Miuwaukee September 28 The schoon er Geo Westcott sprung a leak sev eral miles off shore about daylight and became waterlogged Signals however were seen late today from the local life saving station and the tug Simpson brought the schooner Into port where it was run aground in State Normal Monday with the finest prospects in athletics since the institution opened first coach and physical training di rector has arrived and will be a fiermanent member of the normal faculty He Is William Spauld ing a graduate of Wabash college Indiana and for several years one of original one of the best football teams in the west Mr Spaulding was captain for two years and was selected on the all state and all western teams Be sides his work in football he was on the track team and played some baseball Mr Spaulding has been In Kalamazoo for the past week do ing preliminary work with the boys and already some good material is available Three members of the team which won the state championship for Kalamazoo high school two years ago are with the Normal They are Hugh Nicolls of Battle Creek George Watson Kalamazoo Myers Kalamazoo Dillingham of Kalamazoo center Andrews of Ada guard Dewey of Scotts half back Sowle of Paw Paw quarter back and Myers halfback have been out every day with Mr Spauld ing and some other promising ma terial includes Howard Youngs of Kalamazoo tackle Heaton of Ada McClintock formerly of the Way land team Gleason a 200 pound tackle from the Kalamazoo high schooland others The opening of school will bring some of last men back and a good team is predicted for the Western Normal The schedule which is not completed Includes the following will be organized A 14 lap cork run ning track with a 10 foot surface is included in the equipment of the gymnasium which also has a base ball cage swimming pool and vari ous other accessories HILLSDALE Hillsdale September 2S There has been a great deal of com ment raised over the questions in volved in the athletic problem here this fall Coach Whipple is going ahead as if nothing happened and at present there arc three like ly men who are ineligible but who will be tried out for the team The first game comes next Saturday at Notre Dame Reports front the Hoosier institution would indicate that the team there is not so strong as last year Stock is making the best showing of any of the new men He prob ably will be used at quarter Ho is fast and a good team general The great failing with the quarterbacks heretofore has been their lack of ability to handle the plays Hills defensive work last year was far superior to her offensive work Had the team been able to advance the ball successfully several of the games would have been much closer and possibly would have been won It was a noticeable fact that the high senoot team last year with as captain was able to use the college plays with great suc cess Stewart and Stock will be used for the punting Both are drop kickers Stock being especially good fn tills 'department Capt Watkins is much heavier than last year and is in fine condition With Watkins and Stewart in the half back positions Hillsdale will havethe best back fields in years There are several strong candidates for fullback Oliver played fullback for two years on the Reading team and he is being given a tryout Strick ler a husky Iowa lad with high school experience is making strong bid for honors and will prob ably get a place at end or full back interest among Albion stu dents hovers on the gridiron where Coach Chadwick been working hard for a week with a bunch of practically raw recruits" Seven of the old are back but the interest seems to lag somewhat as all of the old men haw ot yet re ported for practice Hayes returned from St Ignav Wednes day where he has been spending the summer lie has been keeping jn condition ns beet he could and appeared in best of shape upon the field Wednesday afternoon Capt Hayes is one of the strongest halves in the intercollegiate and his ap pearance here will greatly strength en the back field Coach Chadwick seems to bo hav ing considerable difficulty in find ing a competent fullback Sackett has been tried in this posi tion but his presence is greatly needed in the line at tackle Brown of last second team has also acted in this respect but he is rather light for that nosition and would make a stronger man at quarter or end Several otjer men of last eleven would be fast enough for the position but they are needed badly to fill up other holes The position of quarterback also seems to be a puzzle Saunderson captain and quarterback of last year's eleven has been out in the moleskins this week but other matters have kept him from prac tice several nights has had a long experience in the game at qaurterback having played on Indiamapolis Manual Training school Lake View high of Chicago atd Lansing high teams before corning here At nearly every one of these schools he played quarter some of the time Saunderson how ever is a good man attend or at half and Coach Chadwick rpay see fit to shift his position to one of these two Barr who has been a sub on the for two years is another man who looks promising for the quarterback job Barr is small and fast and played the pigskin game at Ludington high He has been able to be out regularly so far this season and his playing shows an provement over that of former years The position at center is practically cinched by Skidmore who has played the game well there for two years The tackle posi tions seem to be rather doubtful at present Sackett will probably be in his old place at right but the position at Isft is still in the air Towsley the six footer from up the state has tn tried at tackle as have also Thornton and Pratt Thornton played a fast game at guard last year and has shown up well in practice this fall Pratt the Detroit Eastern high man seems rather light for the tackle position but he has been exhibit ing the football stuff regularly and it is expected that he will live up to the reputation he made in the Detroit interscholastic McKale will probably come in at his old posi tion at end as he is an old timer at that position is also a veteran quarterback and could run the team a3 well as any of them He may be given a chance at quar terback this fall if Coach Chadwick changes the players around James the colored player from the Show university eleven has been working out at the other half this week and he and Miller seem very probable men for that position Miller however may not parti cipate in the gridiron contests as his right wrist is in bad condition and he will be needed for baseball in the spring The football schedule has ben prepared this season under some difficulty as the change in the athletic management was not made until rather late A complete series of games has been arranged how six places to be filled by new material are so well taken care of that the old scoring machine of last year will soon be forgotten The spirit of the team was never better and witn a hundred women students regularly cheering the men at their practice the players are spurned on to make the greatest efforts Never before has Olivet seen such speed on a football field The back field is composed of ten second men men that have the head and nerve to make their average weight of 160 pounds count against great odds The average weight of the team will be about 155 pounds and there will be no slow men on It This week Coach Kennedy has put on extra pressure to prepare for the Kalamazoo game today Among the new players Hillier of Mt Morris is proving to be the find of the sea son He weighs close to 170 pounds and so ably fills place at fullback that he Is likely to be picked for the All Michlgan full back at the close of the season Barry amantliat appeared Tues day Is making a strong bid for a guard position 'He weighs 170 and has had football experience at Laingsburg Arntsbuechler the big tackle from Traverse City is making good He is a stone wall in defense and a sure ground gainer on offensive work Edie and Gifford are alternating at halfback and are giving each other a race for the money Wade a senior in college is getting out for the first time and looks to be a winner He lacks experience but uses his head all the time The mainstay of the team is Hurl but and his ability as a drop kicker and an artist with the forward pass is Increasing every day The for ward pass works successfully on the scrubs because of the speed of the ends of the varsity team This play and wide end runs have worked every night against the reserves The college team seems to be able to score at will while the scrubs seldom make first down Coach Kennedy Is confident that he will have a team that will be with the leaders when the season closes ADRIAN Adrian Mich September ootball practice has been com menced this fall with the most flat tering prospects in years Coach Pamment and Capt Baxter are very optimistic in regard to the outlook for the season ive of last men are back including Baxter Landenslager and Arnot last sea most promising men Case the star quarter has not yet re turned but reports are current that he will register before the end Coach Pamment has made himself popular with the students in the little time since school began by his energy and knowledge of the game By Monday night it is thought that fully twenty fivo students will appear In Although the
