A. Hughes, MOTHERS' CLUB. i. Interesting Meeting Held At the Home of Mrs. Robert Cor- 4-nelius In Longest Avenue.

HE Highlands Mothers' Club I met at tho residence of Mrs. I Robert Cornelius in Longest JL avenue Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. George Newman's paper on the influence of amusement for young children was not only instructive, but original, and was read in a charmingly womanly manner. Among the many good points she made are the following: "It is a generally acknowledged fact that the first five years of the child's life aro the most Important In regard to mental, moral and physical development." After speaking of several amusements for the child, Mrs.

Newman safd: "Story telling is a fitting climax to this list" amusements. Many childish rebellions are quelled by a story begun at the psycho logical moment, and troubles are forgotten and peace restored under the magic spell of 'Once upon a Simple stories only should be told young children. We do not want to force development, but to meot it. Ethical lesions In even the simpler story Impress the child more than we think, and teach them discrimination." Mrs. Newman closed her paper with this fitting climax: "As a Mothers' Club and as individuals, when we con-elder the deep influence which our children's amusement hears to their future character we should strive for a larger Inslgnt into these things and a greater usefulness, deeper love and sympathy." Miss Vachert, who has charge of the Children's Library, also gave an interesting talk.

She brought out some Interesting points in regard to the Influence of amusements of young children. She said that play was necessary to children, that it was an instinct, however, and not a hah It. She spoke of the concerted movement now sweeping the country to bring children together, and by the community of interests afford them healthful recreation. She spoke of the Knights of the Round and the Sons of Daniel Boone, which have been organized for boys, and tho English movement cidl-! Boy Scots, organized by Baden-Powell. She deplored the detrimental influence of the comic supplement.

"In regard to home amusement," said Miss Vachert, I think nothing Is more important than the Sunday amusement of the child. I regret exceedingly that the old-fashioned Bible stories seem to he out of vogue in the modern nursery. Surely there is a place for such a book in our home. I do not think that we should leave the entire religious) instruction of the children to the hour spent in Sunday-school. Here In this city theno should be some occupation for email children which will be In keeping -with the day and entertaining to tho child as well." A letter was read from the General Federation of Women's Clubs, asking that tho club join that body.
