especially happy omen that Mr Maybury is with us to day It may be that his association with the 20000 women of this order in state will be of benefit to him and that we may soon succeed in relieving his lonely The mayor blushed and the house laughed but his honor was disconcerted only for a moment He rallied gracefully and assured Mrs Burns that he might hold the order to her promise Then in a short speech he congratulated the order on the great work it had done declaring that the Impulse which had led up to having the bed placed in the hospital was of divine origin He was followed by Mrs Rachel A Bailey of Grand Rapids who spoke briefly of the plans of' the order for maintaining the bed and for increasing the number of beds in the hospitals as soon as possible1 Informal remarks were Rivard and Watson streets yesterday after noon considered plans for entertaining the honored guests and delegates to the annual convention that willbe held in this city be ginning July 31 It was decided to charter the steamer Promise and give the delegates a boat ride on the river on Wednesday afternoon July 31 Thursday evening a re ception will be tendered Bishops McQuaid of Rochester and oley of Detroit and the supreme officers at the Detroit Licht Guard armory Saturday evening the he vly elected officers will be tendered a re ception at either the Hotel Cadillac or the Light Guard armory All was 'bustle and excitement at the Light Guard armory Yesterday afternoon as Manager Edward Shipp and his stiore of busy assistants were preparing for the opening the winter circus this afternoon Under his experienced hand a transforma tion was rapidly taking place and it was not long before the big armory presented a striking contrast On the spot where lead ing men of the land had assembled a few days ago and poured forth their eloquence a forty foot circus ring was being con structed ashes and clay in plenty were being spread on the' floor where but a short time previous leaders of society had sat and listened to Mme Sembrich and other singers of prominence Almost on the very spot that literary men orators and clergy have talked from men were busily erecting a circus mechanic and in the iron rafters men were suspending tra pezes and other mechanical devices for men and women to show their skill arid daring It was an interesting sight In a very short space of time the inte rior of the building seemed changed In one corner of the room were several men under the supervision of a performer erecting a stolid nickel frame for an act that is calculated to astonish even the ola time circusgoer Men were testing ropes for the aerialists for it is an unwritten law with circus performers never to put up a contrivance that is not known to be abso lutely safe Carpenters were busy con structing the ring and at the entrance men were building a temporary drive for six beautiful iron grays The ring Itself was being superintended by Manager Shipp and the footing for the knowing horses will be surer than on tent ed circus grounds The foundation is made of ashes to Insure safe footing after which a bed of clay is laid On fop of that will be a covering of shavings In the center of the ring the circus mechanic has been placed and this contrivance will no doubt be well remembered by those who saw the circus last year A prize of $5 is offered by the manage ment to any boy who will ride once around the ring standing on the hack In order that no harm can come to the con testant the circus mechanic is used and as soon as he slips from the horse's back he is suspended in the air by the rope It is a difficult feat for the untrained boy to accomplish but it causes considerable amusement and the youngsters are always willing to take the chance When the circus was in Cedar Rapids a few weeks ago one bright faced little lad came forward and made the ride without any difficulty The audience went wild with delight and cheered the little fellow lustily as he received' the prize from Mr Shipp It turned out afterwards that the boy was more than he pretended to be He was a jockey and had been practicing standing on a pony that he owned Mr Shipp said yesterday afterno on that the prize would be given to any one who suc ceeded in making tne me Most of the circus performers the performance at Wonderland yesterday afternoon but as the circus is now on its eighth successful week there is no need of rehearsal One of the most difficult acts on the bill is given by Carlosa who walks up and down facing and backwards on an unsupported ladder He is one of the few who have accomplished this feat suc cessfully The Young Brothers with their novel turn of aerial casting the Gillmore trio the Adairs with their novelty balanc ing and musical act: Nellie Chenette who swings in mid air suspended by her teeth and a host of fun makers are on the pro gramme Miss Julia Lowaride who Is Mr wife is one of the most graceful daring and accomplished riders in the profession io uay ana net ciever worK on tne back of her favorite gray will be one of the fea tures of the performance Oakley (better known as Adair Moore and Carlos the clowns will who is called th 3 champion double somersault leaper IS with the show The members of the Light Guard under whose auspices the circus is given have been working hard to make the show a success and it is expected that large crowds will attend every performance The opening will take place this evening after which performances will be given every afternoon and evening during the week In order that every child may see the performance The ree Press has made ar rangements with the management to as sume the burden of the expense The reg ular price of admission is twenty five cents but by presenting an open rebellion is now the only remedy to which Ireland could look for the alleviation of Its troubles If she did say so I disagree with her There is no crisis' and any such ex treme measures are uncalled for Home rule is accomplishing great reform and will ultimately alleviate Irish oppression" Michael Cook president of the United Irish Societies when shown the statement Miss Gonne is alleged to have made said he is against an open 'rebellion and that the Irish masses would not join in such a movement would be treachery and there would be no hope of success for such a he said parliamentary the time is not far distant when Ireland will be free i eports received through English channels of Boer reverses are given no credence in said Miss Gonne "If English statistics were to be believed they had annihilated every man woman and child in the Transvaal six months ago The amount of money expended by England in this war has caused as much mourning among her sons as the destruction of her crack regiments too is feeling the tax upon her purse strings and the mutterings of dis content are being heard throughout her en tire dominion The real number of losses in the English army will never be made known and desperate attempts are being made to recruit in every colony controlled by England The success they are having in Ireland is being shown by the attempt to fill the quota of a And all shall answer at altar I or hope may anchor faith may guide but love great love Is captain of the soul This means the exaltation of com mon humanity and will contain education liberty beauty advanced yesterday afternoon by Rev Neheiniah Boynton the eloquent minister of the irst Congregational church as he stood on the stage of the Empire theater at the close of the revival meeting with several other clergy men i I said Dr Boynton the legular business pf the union should be sidetracked Monday and the sub ject of these meetings considered Now is the time to' effect1 a 'federation
