LIGHTSHIP NO 5t' Ziorne Is the house where Hlumi Hating apparatus is repaired and made ser viceable Methodically laid out upon the ground ae spar buoys for river and lake shoals and big stone sinkers There are also 3500 pound iron sinkers which look so solid that to the uninitiated it would seem as if a buoy fastened with such an appendage would stay in one spot but old lighthouse men know that these anchors are sometimes lively travelers when a storm is raging and the buoys expose considerable surface to the fury of the win! and waves Several anchors are seen an anchor which is as nearly non movable as is possible When several such anchors are thrown out on all sides of a lightship the craft will remain practically stationary during a storm With the part firmly imbedded in the soil It will take a mighty strain to move the anchor percep tibly Such an anchor would be extremely cumbersome for an ordinary craft on ac count of the difficulty of raising it but as a lightship is intended to remain in one place it answers the purpose much better than would the ordinary anchor or that latest patent the stockless anchor Th? speaking of the light house system of the eleventh reference should be made first to the light on Belle Isle It is of the fourth order of light its characteristic being what is termed "fixed red It is light visible fourteen the structure being a conical white tower with red brick dwelling detached and fog signal buildings in front of the station There is an 8 inch steam whistle blast 8 seconds with a silent interval of 52 seconds The light is fixed white varied by a white flash every two minutes The ort Sanilac lighthouse is of the fourth order 69 feet high It was established in 1S86 The Sand Beach harbor of refuge is guarded by four lights two at the east and two at the north entrance The south and west lights are placed on skeleton iron tripods 27 1 2 feet in hight The main light at the east entrance Is located on a conical brown iron tower and flashes alternately red and white every five seconds There is also a Id Inch steam whistle Three of the lights are on the breakwater while the main light is on a rectangular crib just outside the north side of the east entrance to the harbor At Pointe aux Barques is a lighthouse of the third order with a light S9 feet in hight flashing white every ten seconds This marks the turning point for entering Sagi naw bay There is a life saving station about 2)0 yards south of the lighthouse The Port zNustin reef coast light was established in 1S7S and Is of the fourth order There is a fixed white light for one minute followed during the next minute by five consecutive red flashes at intervals of twelve seconds The hight Is SO feet and the light can be seen sixteen and three fourths miles A first class steam siren is located here and has a blast of seven seconds and a silent interval of eighty seconds To the lands man the is more entrancing during the intervals for its music is not so charm ing as the melodious harmonies of the sirens of the Homeric period And yet it may be presumed that these blasts bring joy to the heart of the mariner teiiing him where his bearings are It will be of interest in this connection to speak of the electric buoy plant established near Chicago in Lake Idiehigan The Unit ed States lighthouse board by its letter of March' 8' 1893 directed the Inspector of thethird lighthouse district on account of his ith electric iishted Ian for lighting the lighted buoys for The ninth district includes navigation on Lake Michigan and tributary waters and the Straits of Mackinac west of a line drawn across the straits from 011 Mackinac Point There are 95 lighthouses and beacon lights in this district 3 lightships in position 19 fog signals operated by steam and 7 operated by clockwork 13 electric lighted buoys and 85 other buoys in position The buoys in this district are attended by the tender Dahlia except the Bank Point buoy in Lake Muskegon the buoy at the entranceto St Joseph harbor Michigan those in Green bay south of Long Tail point" and the channel buoys in ox river between Green Bay City and De Pere Wis Two spars were placed on shoal spots inside and outside ox Island shoals Iake Mich igan A line of thirteen electric buoys was placed between Chicago Breakwater light house and the air casino wharf These electric buoys are in midchannei and marked a fairway for the steamboats running between Chicago and the exposi tion When these buoys were first estab lished the steamboat people were inclined to ignore them but they soon recognized their merit and took advantage of them Besides their usefulness they were an im portant feature the fair In this district the lighthouse at Grosse Point Evanston is of the second order It is 119 1 2 feet in hight and the light can be seen at a distance of about twenty miles It has a fixed white light varied by a red flash every three minutes The third order of lights in this district are: South Manitou Grande Pointe au Sabie Petite Pointe au Sable Chicago river Wind Point Twin River Point and Cana Island Hock is a superb lighthouse order It is erected on a northern end of Stannard The light flashes white every thirty The light is 102 feet above the At the dock here are seen a number boats devoted to the service and more less pretentious in appearance as well several lightships which will soon be placed where they are assigned to go preparatory to the opening of navigation There stands the Marigold waiting for the sea son service to begin She is the boat for the eleventh district Near her He the Amaranth and the "Warrington as well as the Hayes the boat in the tenth district Several of the lightships from
