Rudy was genuinely brought back to life in 1961 in "How to Succeed in Business," in which he shone for more than 1,400 performances on Broadway as J.

B. Biggley, the pompous president of World Wide Wicket Company. He savored the prospect of playing the movie version when the Crosby threat appeared. In his biography, Vallee wrote: "If they offer me the motion picture role of J. B.

Biggley I will bound from my wheel chair and crawl to the studio on my hands and knees." No need. Vallee, who will be 65 in July, is a remarkably athletic man, vigorous and abounding in high spirits. By LEONARD FEATHER just play till 2. and nobody danced people just sat around and listened. It was the first time that had ever happened to me." AFTER LETTING the thought simmer for eight years, Rumsey walked into the Lighthouse one Saturday, found it thinly inhabited, and asked Levine if he had ever thought of running a Sunday jazz bash.

"It was a case of being in the right place at the right time," he said. "From Sundays it grew to weekends and then full weeks." During the 1950s the Light- IBWillliMIIH WIS This evening will pass normally at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, Calif. The Three Sounds will play, the cash register will offer a soothing obbligato, customers will drink (moderately) and applaud (immoderately). "Nothing special," said owner John Levine. "We don't believe in celebrations." Musical director Howard Rumsey added: "Out here every night is a celebration." Yet the date will be something quite special.

It will have been exactly 17 years since the Lighthouse, staging its first Sunday afternoon jam session, became a jazz club. It is now the oldest surviving week-round jazz club in the United States. THE LIGHTHOUSE is so situated that on a clear night, if he were in optimum physical shape, Howard Rumsey could throw his bass fiddle from the main entrance into the Pacific Ocean. A block from the beach, it was once a restaurant. Rumsey, a native Cali-fornian, is a tall, ambling figure who combines the drawling speech of a hippie with the business sense of a smart operator and the warm enthusiasm of a musician.

"The idea for the club." he recalls, "came to me in 1941, when 1 was with Stan Kenton's band in Balboa, Calif. But only after the specter of Bing Crosby haunted him for the second time in 35 years. Rudy Vallee will never shake off crosbyphobia. It was Der Bingle who put an end to Rudy's reign as king of the crooners back in 1931. And it was Bing who almost was cast in "How to Succeed" in place of Rudy. Rudy recalled vividly the night of his great realization that the Groaner was top dog in the crooning dodge.

I was sitting in a New York hotel room," Vallee recounted. "All of a sudden I heard a sound truck blaring through the streets at 10 o'clock at night. It was play- i ing 'I Found a Million Dollar Babv in the Five and Ten Cent "THE MINUTE 1 heard that i voice 1 knew I was through. Here, 1 realized, was a great singer. I just wished I could sing like that." Once Crosby's career began rolling on records and in movies and radio.

Vallee's "Maine Stein Song." his megaphone, the wavy-haired Yale look in blazer and ice cream pants were out like Herbert Hoover. The Vagabond Lover was simply a vagabond done in by the phenomenon of one of the truly greats of show business. Rudy, however, was not embittered. He took his shellacking like the well-bred ivy leaguer he is. He lost as graciously as the captain of a polo team.

THROUGH THE years Rudy flourished as a sometime actor, night club entertainer and occasionally even singing the "Stein Song," The Start of MARRY-MENT a Wedding Reception at Camelback Inn Please Call WH 5-8441 For Information Murm's PEAK CHUCK CARTER THE KINSMEN Wetf. The resident band usually included several Kenton alumni; among those who passed through its ranks were Shorty Rogers, Bud Shank, Shelly Manne, Stan Levey and Bob Cooper, whose saxophone has resounded through the room off and on since 1953. Other former Lighthouse regulars include Max Roach, Jimmy Giuffre, Hampton Hawes, Victor Feldman, Chet Baker, Ger-ery Mulligan, Bob Brookmey-er and the late Joe Gordon.

Los Angeles Times Service 'tempos are slow, much slower, in fact, than his mono recordings, and while many will enjoy them, I found Ormandy's Tchiakovsky rather too heavy for my taste, despite the lovely playing of the Philadelphia Orchestra. This appears to be RCA's first recording of the symphony in more than 25 years, when Eugene Gossens did it with the Cincinnati Symphony. Previn is quite exciting here, tempos are fast, the music is continually being pushed, and the results are impressive. I do think that Maazel, all things considered, gets more out of the music, but the difference is again not that great. Fine, typically, brilliant RCA sound. FROM COLUMBIA we have Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra in a 3-LP set of the last three symphonies, the three we are all familiar with.

These are not new recordings, but have been taken from the Columbia catalogue and put together at an economy price. This is an attractive buy, if you desire lush playing, and superb stereo sound. Von luren IR 5-4421 There's an old musical joke that goes something like this: Teacher: "How many symphonies i Tchaikovsky write?" Student: "Three, the Fourth, the Fifth, and the Sixth." Well, that's just about the truth when it comes to the Tchaikovsky symphonies usually heard in the concert hall, but now Mercury and London records have come along with two fine sets of the first three of the six. For London, Lorin Maazel conducts the Vienna Philharmonic, and for Mercury An-tal Dorati conducts the London Symphony. Both sets are quite enjoyable. Maazel strives for a brilliant, full blown Tchaikovsky, very precise, but full of dynamic tension, energy, and rhythm.

Dorati is also excellent, but he seems just a shade more superficial than does Maazel, and he does not get as much bife into his interpretations. SOME CRITICS have found Dorati's way preferable, perhaps because the symphonies really do not need the super-virtuoso treatment. Yet Dorati is no slouch when it comes to orchestral wizardry, and his interpretations are certainly valid. In fact, the difference between the two is not that much. The difference, so far as the collector is concerned, is in price.

The Maazel set is available on three single LP's, with a symphony to a disc. Mercury has been able to squeeze the Dorati recordings into only two LP's, which makes for a nne-third saving if you want all three, but if you want only one of the symphonies, the Dorati set becomes expensive. Good sound from both London and Mercury, with London's a shade cleaner and fuller. COME TO THE ID DANCING TONITE! Country and Western Music DON BOOTS A Hit Band Starts Tues. Bv Popular Demand.
