UNDEEDS of editors and scores of bankers in the three States from which most of the men at Camp Zachary Taylor came joined early and enthusiastically in plans for the big celebration -which would convince the lads in khaki that "the folks back home" were mindful their Christmas cheer. The editors opened the columns of their papers to let their readers learn the various steps in the unfolding plans of the Christmas Cheer Club. Many of them acted as depositories of gifts and contributions in money, sending these later to Santa Claus' headquarters here. The bankers made remittances of contributions left with them by the people of their respective communities, in nearly all instances adding substantial contributions of their own.

Executive Committee of the Camp Zachary Taylor Christmas Cheer Club (Continued from Page Three.) diana and Southern Illinois community sending their sons to Camp Zachary Taylor. Attractive colored posters were printed and mailed to banks and newspapers in these communities together with letters appealing to them to use their efforts to stimulate local contributions toward the cause. It was explained in these appeals that General Hale had estimated that half of the soldiers at Camp Zachary Taylor would not be remembered by the folks back home at Christmas time unless some organized movement was started for them. Many of the soldiers at Camp Zachary Taylor have no folks back home, or their families are too- far away or are too poor to care for The Courier-Journal had implicit faith that the civilian population of these communities was sufficiently patriotic and generous to will that no soldier preparing to defend the homes and lives of the civilians would pass Christmas unremembered. The Courier-Journal's faith in the public generosity has been abundantly justified.

The response has been most gratifying. The investment of money and labor that the Courier-Journal has put into this undertaking has paid abundantly in satisfaction that has come from the hearty- and enthusiastic co-operation of the great-hearted civilian populace. Several hundred newspapers and banks responded quickly to the Courier-Journal's appeal, with letters of sympathetic encouragement and promises of pfactical co-operation. So impressed were the Red Cross officials by the Courier-Journal Christmas Cheer Club's success, that James R. Garfield, head of the Lake Division of the American Red Cross, isshed an official bulletin instructing all Red Cross Chapters in the Lake Division to send their Christmas gifts to the Cheer Club, and Mr.

Garfield, when in Louisville early in December, wrote a personal letter to Mr. Watterson, warmly thanking him for the Christmas campaign of his paper and appointing liim the official Red Cross Santa Claus. The task of buying, assembling and classifying the various articles of merchandise destined for the soldiers was a colossal one. The gifts were assembled in a large room in the Courier-Journal building and sorted into individual packages by women volunteer workers. After it had become evident that the Christmas fund would be sufficient to guarantee a gift for every soldier the question arose as to how the gifts should be presented "to the men.

It was not a' question of transportation for there were plenty of Louisville business houses eager to place their at the disposal of the Christmas Cheer Club, but the spirit of the occasion demanded that there be something more than that. It was not deemed enough to place the gifts on trucks and deliver them to the soldiers. It was decided to have a committee represent the civilian population at the Christmas exercises. Accordingly the call was sent out for volunteers to serve on this committee. The idea was to have one civilian assigned to each barracks for the purpose of putting the intimate human touch into the celebration, to give the soldiers the concrete and physical proof of the solid, sincere devotion of the pub Union City Times, Valparaiso Messenger.
