Some Charming ull gtyle at Hun ter Glenn Opening Of all the feminine fancle there are none so mysterious as that which creates a head gear craze It is divine prerog ative to be more beautiful than man and it is also her right to enhance that attrac tion by artificial means A man would be completely at sea were he to start out one morning and attempt to find what he in a hat had he as many styles designs and qualities to choose from as a lady But the lady gets there without a mur mur She enters a millinery store looks at 5S4 hats trys on 870 and finally selects one which fits her if she is tasteful as though it were an integral part of her anatomy Women are singular creatures as Artemus Ward observed and to study their charms you have to accompany them to a millinery opening like that of Hunter Glenn Hunter's yesterday and the day before This opening was one of the crowning ones in the millinery history of Detroit The ladies were fairly beside themselves at the marvelous beauty of the fall novelties Mr Thomson the af fable confidential man of the firm ushered the visitor into the holy of holies ex clusively dedicated to the goddess of fail novelties This charming boudoir is situ ated on the second floor and is presided over by Mrs atton a queenly lady of verv refined tastes She is ably assisted by 'Miss Rhein and Miss Hoyt the latter a relent arrival from New York where she graduated in the highest art of the modeste Ladies thronged the millinery parlors all enthusiastic over the latest gems of the artist Something caught the attraction of the visitor In the large glass cases walled the department and these and center tables were filled with hats in all the most con desicns black plumes being the most con spicuous decorations It seemed everv and the place was wanted to buy some hat or at least to try one on and see how it Glance at that over yonder She has just removed her own hat which Is built on a flower garden order She Is about to try on a Rembrandt trimmed with ostrich plumes She looks stunning In the new headwear Does it suit? No She picks up another called the Napoleon constructed like the hat of the Little Cor poral and bound to become popular It was admired but another the Josephine took its place She examined several and finallv made the tour of the parlor becom ing more enthusiastic as she went until finallv she halted at her own she ejaculated are so niariv beautiful designs that I cannot decide which I will Here the queenly taste of Airs Patton came into play is something which will suit your type of she re marked as she picked up a stylish toque called a Liliius of black rench felt trimmed with handsome plume The ef fect was exceedingly remarkable Mrs Patton had captivated the customer The hat fitted so bewitchingly that all the ladies noticed it immediately The manner in which visitors are made to feel at home at Hunter Glenn 2c and the pains which are usually taken to please them makes the firm popular Thousands of ladies visited the store yes terdav and examined the four floors filled with beautiful fall and winter clothing The place was very artistically decorated with palms and potted plants The at tractiveness of the show windows was the talk of the avenue and praise for the decorative features of the store could be heard on every side They will surely and positively cure you Little Liver Pills The Lust of the Season The Star Line steamer Idlewild will give another fifty leave Detroit for Port Huron and way ports everj week day at 3:30 until the close of navigation ROM REE READERS The Increased Valuation To the Editor of The Detroit ree Press In a local article of September 25 1393 you state in his efforts to keep the bonded debt of the city within the two per cent limit of valuation Mayor Pingree caused the valuation to be raised some $15 000000 last and quote a citizen as saying the State Board of Equaliza tion meets in a few days and shoves that much additional of the enormous state tax for this year onto Wayne County There Is no truth in the foregoing In the first place the assessors make the valuations and not the Mayor The fact that they increased the valuation fayors the poor and not ths rich man or capital ist There is a natural increase in valuation every year from new buildings erected also on account of the necessity of equal izing values but this year the Board of Assessors made special efforts to unearth the cash and securities owned or controlled by capitalists thereby lessening the bur den of taxation In the second place the State Board of Equalization has nothing to do with the assessment this year or for three years to come in regard to the equalization of as sessments for Wayne County or any other countv in this state statutes section 319 page 166 states "That there shall be a state board of equalization to consist of the Lieut Governor Auditor General Secretary of State State Treasurer and Commissioner of Land Office whose duty it shall be in the year 1S51 and every fifth year there after to equalize the assessment on all tax able propertj" in the state (except that pay ing specific You will perceive therefore that they met in 1891 and will not meet again until 1S96 If the aforesaid citizen desires no injus tice done Wayne County in equalizing let him commence proceedings against certain counties in this state that fail to comply with the law and assess property at from twenty to fifty per cent of its value The Board of Assessors of the City of Detroit are sworn to comply with the law and endeavor to do so or the Board of Assessors RED ARNSWORTH President Detroit September 27 1893 Yesterday's coming from an American source denies the truth of the report re ceived here to the effect that the warships belonging to the squadron commanded by Admiral de Aiellos were silenced after open ing fire upon Rio de Janeiro by the guns of the land forts at the mouth of the har bor The forts at Rio according to this dis patch never tried a shot at the rebel ships for fear of hurting friends and damaging property and because the little ammuni tion they have in their magazines is held In reserve in view of a possible attack upon the forts themselves The Inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro hoped and are still hoping for foreign interven tion in their favor and the commanders of the foreign warships are said to have been frequently appealed to on the subject with no definite result though the report has reached here that the foreign ships have intervened in favor of Rio de Janeiro Some surprise is expressed here at the fact that the United States Government has not yet received accurate news from Rio especially as it is announced here that the cruiser Charleston has reached that port People here believe that the United States Government would be able to obtain news from Rio when any other government would be unable to do so The dispatch from Rio also says that the British foreign office has dispatched an urgent cable message to the British minis ter at Rio de Janeiro and that upon its answer depends the action of the British war vessels in these waters London September 23 A private cable message received here this afternoon says that the rebel fleet resumed the bombard ment of Rio de Janeiro this morning The llangarinn Budget Buda Pesth September 28 The Hungar ian budget for 1894 shows a total surplus of 1168 florins a decrease of 418434 florins compared with 1893 Claim to Have Un earthed a Monster Conspiracy Vienna September In spite of the efforts made by irresponsible news agen cies to belittle the story of the arrest in this city on September 23 of a number of anarchists In a house on Siebenbrunner strasse the fact remains that the police of this city did upon that occasion discover a great conspiracy On September 23 the police when they found in the house on Siebenbrunner street in this city cases of revolvers bombs ready for loading ex plosives at hand with which to load the bombs and coats with leather linings to which hooks for suspending bombs were at tached also discovered In the walls and furniture of the house where the coats were also found documents of a most im portant nature The full particulars of the plot discovered were not made public at the time the police made the arrests on toiebenbrunner strasse The Austrian po lice say now that the investigation made since September 23 shows that the anar cnists intended to smutrerle a quantity of dynamite into the underground portion of the Reichsrath and when that body met on October 10 to blow the Reichsrath sky high and strike terror into the hearts o'f the enemies of the independent group of socialists to which the anarchists arrested on September 23 here belonged But the Reichsrath was not the only building the anarchists intended to blow up on October 10 they had their plans also fully prepared to blow up the town hall In this building over 1000 people would have been destroyed on October 10 had the police not unearthed the anarchist plot on September 23 Even this was not the full extent of the terrible conspiracy discovered A number of other important buildings on the Ring strasse one of the finest streets in Europe were doomed to destruction and everybody in them on the day appointed for the anar chist outbreak the university another building was also to be undermined with dynamite as was the famous historical museum of Vienna and other fine buildings of a similar nature the Hofburg theater opposite the Rathhaus was also marked out for dynamiting Now comes so far as the United States is concerned the strangest part of the whole conspiracy It has been announced that the bombs of the Vienna anarchists were manufactured according to the for mula prepared by Herr Alost of New York Correspondence between the anar chists here and those at Chicago is said to be in the hands of the Austrian police who it would seem must have communi cated with the police of Chicago on the sub ject New York September John Alost the leader of the anarchists in New York was visibly excited as well as indignant when the report was published to day that the A ienna dynamiters were sustained by the anarchists here in their plan to blow tip the Austrian government building one but an idiot could credit such nonsense" said Most would be the hight of ab surdity for the outraged workingmen of Vi enna to conceive such a plot and then to risk the discovery which would be Involved by trusting its details to the mails Noth ing is sacred from the eyes of the govern ment spies" NOT A NVAltM NVELCOME The rench Not so Enthusiastic Over Hie Visit of the Russians Paris September It is now evident that the semi official and official warnings which the rench government has received from Russia in regard to putting a check upon the extra demonstrativeness of the rench people in connection with the visit of the Russian fleet at Toulon are having their effect To day the Gaulois says that the Russian fleet will not be received by the President of the rench republic but that it will be elcomed by Admiral Rieu nier commander of the naval forces at Toulon and by Jen Borieus in command of the military forces at the port mentioned It is added however the Goulois savs that on the departure of the Russian "visitors from Paris President Carnot will announce to the Russian officers his Intention of pay ing them a return visit at Toulon soon af ter their return to their ships Then again yesterday the municipal au thorities of Toulon were informed that thev could not have the 500090 francs asked for from the government in order to enter tain the Russian visitors and that they must yay tor any projected entertainment out of their own funds All this has cast a chill over rance and has given much satisfaction to neighbor ing nations for it has plainly indicated the fact that rance cannot rely to any great degree upon the friendship of Russia and that this friendship is based upon the understanding that Russia is to do as she pleases but that rance must follow the guidance of Russia it she desires the lat ter to remain her friend THE WOHK ROBBERS Three Killed and our Injured In the Wreck at Gulfport Miss Nashville Tenn
