July 8 or years water system has been up for argument It is built of tile logs cement and iron pipe and at its best point yields only half the pressure really needed The company tried to collect of the city for use of tire hydrants but was beaten in the courts Last year the works went into the hands of the Michigan Trust Company of Grand Rapids xvho tried to rent or sell them to the city The aidermen fought shy of either proposal and art agitation began for new waterworks owned by the city but before the city could go into the business the charter granted expired and hence a new one was drafted and put before the Legislature Before it was passed the re cent election was held and the city be came Republican The new council went through the charter like a new broom several amendments were made to it and then it was passed Recently an ardent advocate In the coun cil for city waterworks got through a proposition to bond the city for $luiiiM to build waterworks and an electric plant combined This started a red hot fight which was ended to day by a decision that the new charter limits the amount of in debtedness which can be incurred in any one year to 2 per cent of the valuation which for Niles means $320X Then it was discovered that the limiting clause was inserted without the knowledge of the council and now it is being asked angrily who did it? It looks very mud as though long headed action has again outwitted a too confident people As matters stand the city will have to contract with the old system or go without fire protection en tirely It the instance of Ira and Judah this accomplishment Is coupled with that of absorbing frequent doses of abnormal size of Medford rum and whatever else of an exhiliarating character that happens to fall in their way The principal requisite for a hunter of wild honey is good vision To be a success at the business a man must be long sighted Ira Is a long sighted individual and so is Judah and when they are about half loaded with rum they are very long sighted indeed The hunter wanders around the fields un til he spies a bee gathering honey from a succulent blossom then he hangs around that blossom until the be" nas filled his saddle bacs and departs for home then the liner fixes his eyes on that tiny black spot and follows it across th? fields as it speeds in the direction of the store house The distance at which these men can fol low a bee with the naked eye Is astonishing The first trip that th" bee makes satisfy the hunter He hovers around the blossom until the bee returns for more sweetness When it has done this three or four times each time lining across the fields in the same direction th" hunter is satisfied and he tags around behind the bee towards the nearest woodland on the line of flight When the trees1 are reached the hunter looks for one that appears to be decaying or to have a hollow trunk If this is found he listens writh his ear against it for th" tnufiled hum of the busy honey makers If his search has been successful he cuts a hole into the hollow trunk puts a fire in the opening and in short time the flames and smoke put the to flight St Louis Post
