and the uncertainty that always prevails in busi ness circles during a presidential campaign are likely to nullify to a considerable ex tent for the next three months the favor able conditions which the markets unim peded would provoke However in the opinion of good judges it ta not by any means certain that people have as yet seen the limit to the decline in prices of material and should the cities of America is beginning to have its effect upon the reports made of commercial Saturday July 14 It Dun the following statement: the 51(ju 57013 1 845664661 843853076 521(685 diligent search fuirlure returns worth nothing But to day it is shown that thirty (tanking failures for $25822682 against 31 last year for $7601728 accounted for much of the difference that 265 brok erage and real estate against 115 last year for only S2328S15 ac counted for another uumunjj ana lumoer worKing other large failures distinctly with thnup in i more of Hie dlffeienco between manufac turing and trading failures last year and A glance at the facts that this statement contains reveals a surprising condition of things in real estate and building circles That the failures in this department of commercial effort should number twice as many as for the same length of time last year is an astounding on" and that these failures should represent ten times as much money as did those of last year is still more suggestive It is true that the figures given above arc significant Inas much us they seem to show that many brokers builders and owners of real estate in some parts of the country are giving up the battle and are determined to even up at any cost and for once know where they stand In the end this disposition on the part of the dealers in realty to get down to a business basis at any cost will act as a corrective to many of the abuses from which the market is at present suf fering It is not the shrinkage In values alone which drives the real estate dealer to the wall but in many cases it is utter indifference on the part of investors caused by a disposition to wait until the standard of values for this commodity be comes more definite and thoroughly settled Men with large otfice expenses cannot stand the waning game any better than tiny can the actual slirihkage in values and the sooner matters are brought ton crisis the better for all concerned When the buyer has become convinced that values have reached bottom he will enter the market and business will re vive The following extract from a recent issue of the New York Commercial Ad vertiser shows how the waiting game Is affecting real estate dealers in that city jut at present: "Brokers and ojK rators are at a loss to explain even to their own satisfaction the apparent Indifference of the public to all their overtures It is a condition characteristic of the season only It Is more emphatically dull stale stufdd inert and uninteresting than for many a year before The whole sum of all the brokerage earned by the entire fraternity for the last six weeks would not suffice to meet the office expenses of the leading dozen firms In the business for the same period Yet Is the market firm in tone and
