to western football It was the forward pass a Slav Which the east has branded with many a and Jest as silly and impractical that brought home the old ArmJ bacon Two of the touchdowns were made a Single stratagerrt nor so much as Indicate a formation while he was up the Hudson earlier In the week but he rubbed elbows with the Army coaches and talked with them until they could not have helped absorbing his idea that football Is something besides two or three futile rushes and a kick It was pitiful to see the Navy trying to break up the passes An alert western team which is always menaced by thli play the moment It takes the field might have been able to spoil them all but Annapolis believed that anybody would be so sacre llgious and low down as to make a habit of passing In a game of this Importance done at all you they say down here West Point even had another touchdown as good as made when the ball was passed 35 yards to Markoe who got It squarely In his arms across the goal line but fum bled and tossed oft the six points In looking around for the man with whom to credit the victory do not overlook the West Point fellow who scheduled Notre Dame this season Just as surely as the Army Is con suming a few barrels of liquor this evening the Notre Dame beating made possible triumph These Catholics from the west gave the Army Its first real exhi bition of forward passing Hawkeyes had tour downs to make the distance but the great playing of Halligan stopped the attacks and Nebraska obtained possession of the oval on its one foot line BY WALTER ECKERSALL CoDvricbt 1913 by The Tribune Company WITH THREE non western conference elevens having an equal claim to the western championship with Chicago the champion and having already selected two all star con ference teams it is only just that all western honorary elevens be selec ted which shall be composed of the players who hav heen of the most value to their respective teams Although the west can boast of more all American material this fear than ever before in the history of football the task of selecting an all western eleven is difficult There are so many players who are about equal in their respective positions that the problem is much more diffi cult than for several seasons The advanced style of footballO' which has been taught and the clever manner in which the numer ous complicated plays were exe cuted by sterling gridiron warriors resulted in the most successful western season since 1905 The players possessed a thorough knowl edge of the game and the coaches gleaned a better idea of the possi bilities afforded by the alterations In the rules Because of players who have graced western rridirpns this year a good perform er of a few years ago would bo east into oblivion by the perform true to their repu tations in practically and it is because of this football jssential that the task of bestow ng honors on this years piaX55 li a hard one The work oi pjry luan selected on these elevens hue been followed in every game The writer has been in a judge the players by officiating in lume of tho games and thus getting i close range view Of their work Other data have been gathered from other officials These elevens are herewith Pr2" seated after an honest and impar tial selection In the opinion of the writer the team as chosen would be strong in all departments and would be composed of players who would tight to the bitter end They have taken part in many hard fought struggles and not one ot then: has shown signs of quitting or letting up in his efforts to stem the tide of defeat or increase the Ilze of the score Captain Hockne who led tho no tra Dame eleven through such a suc cessful season is placed at right end This player possesses all the qualifications of an
