J. Sanders, Parole Clerk, State Prison.) "The reformation of offenders, though an object worthy the attention of the laws, is not affected at all by capital punishment, which exterminates instead of reforming, and should be the last melancholy resource against those whose existence is become inponsist-ent with the safety of their tellow citizens, which also weaken the state by cutting off so riiany, who, if reformed, might be restored sound members of society, who, even under a course of correction, might be rendered useful in various labors for the public, and would be living and long continued spectacles to deter others from committing the like offenses. And forasmuch as the experience of ail ages and countries hath shown that cruel and sanguinary laws defeat their own purpose, by engaging the benevolence of mankind, to withhold prosecutions, to smother testimony, or to listen to it with bias, when, if the punishment were only proportioned to the injury, men would feel in their inclination, as well as their duty, to see the laws observed." Thomas Jefferson. There is much food for thought in the above words of the great Jefferson. There is much food for reflection among our citizens who boast of being Jefferscnian democrats or Jeffersonian progressives.

The spirit of progress is permeating every avenue of our national life. Tile great figh't that was made against the Arizona constitution Washington has started something. Even the most rabid standpatters in the United States senate are casting "heir votes for the recall of judges by impeachment. The battle for woman suffrage is all but won; in the United States, for no longer can any great party in the nation ignore the issue; no longer can any national party hope for success if they fail to declare for inman suffrage in their national Popular government features will soon be embodied in our national constitution. The initiative, referendum and recall of ait-national officials, including the election of our president by direct vote, will soon be the law of the land.

Thomas Jefferson, the most far-seeing statesmen that our nation has produced, believed in all of these features of popular gov ernment. Catch up with Jefferson, you who are obseessed with instincts in herited from our savage and- barbarous ancestry. You who do not believe in individual murder, but who do believe in collective murder by states and nations by legal executions and war, catch up with Jefferson. No longer may you boast of being a Jeffersonian democrat or a Jeffersonian progressive if you favor the taking of human life by the states. Thought is creative and when you think legal murder you cannot get away from the fact, a fundamental law of psychology, that you are premeditating murder in the very depths of your soul.

If you oelieve in the Jeffersonian principles of government, if you believe in progress, if you believe in the truthi of Christianity, if you tielitve that we should have peace on earth, then cast off those Tory instincts, cast off ail reactionary influences, throw aside your paganisms, lay aside all thoughts of war. all thoughts of legal executions, and be a true Jeffersonian progressive, a true Christian. First Meet in Chicago Hall of Exhibitors -of Two Wheelers, Bicycles and Accessories Opens With Assured Success. NOW THE CHICAGO SHOW With success assured from the start, the first sanctioned National Motorcycle, Bicycle and Accessory show will bloom forth in the Manufacturers' Exhibition building, Chicago, Chicago, this morning. Then, for six days, will be held what promises, to be the most comprehensive of all exhibits of motorcycles, bicycles and accessories.

Heretofore these exhibitions have been held annually in connection with the automobile shows. But tne growth of interest in motorcycling led to the decision for an experiment in the way of a separate show. Acting upon this decision the show committee obtained 13,000 square feet of space in the Manufacturers' Exhibition building. Exhibitors promptly began making their reservations. All of the space was soon taken and after some effort an additional 4.SO0 ftet was secured.

This, too, was promptly gobbled up and there was a demand for more. A strenuous ef-foit resulted in another SOO feet and it has all been taken. Tite show thus starts Monday with 1S.C00 square feet of floor space and ore than seventy exhibitors. From advance information the attendance ill eclipse all previous shows. o- THANKFUL HE WAS NOT A WOMAN.

The late Lawson Tait. of England, the great woman's doctor, said he never went to bed at night without thanking heaven he was not born a woman. No doctor ever knew better than he what women have to suffer at some times of their lives. It was an American woman long since passed to her reward who introduced a simple combination of roots and herbs called Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, that proved wonderfully successful in mitigating suffering and curing diseases of women.
