Page 2 Jancsville Daily Saturday. July 2S. 1964 Await Hoffa Verdict Today CHICAGO (AP)- Teamsters President James R. Hoffa awaited today the verdict of a U. S.

district court jury deciding whether he and six codefendants are guilty of mail fraud and conspiracy. Hoffa, 51, was silent after the eight men and four a ast-minute under consideration 13 weeks of testimony and mountains of documentary evidence Friday night. The seven men are charged in a 21 count indictment with fraudulently obtaining more than $20 million from a Teamsters pension fund and diverting $1 million to personal use. There are 294 possible verdicts, Hoffa snapped, "no comment," when asked for a prediction and was overheard telling the codefendants to say nothing of the trial. The lone Negro on the jury, Rayford Lee, was dismissed shortly before Judge Richard B.

Austin instructed the jury. The court was informed that Lee's mother had suffered a broken hip when she fell in her home. After a conference between the judge and attorneys, Lee was dismissed. One of four alternates, rence Miller, about 60, replaced Lee. Both are members of labor unions.

The jury deliberated in a room adjacent to the courtroom. A host of U.S. marshals pa- troled in the corridor. The courtroom was During the 13 weeks of trial a transcript of more than 16,000 pages was compiled, 114 government witnesses testified and 22 witnesses appeared for the defense. The government built its case around Sun Valley, a home development for retired Teamsters near Orlando, Fla.

The prosecution contended the codefendants conspired to obtain loans from the pension fund to bail Hoffa out of a financial crisis. The codefendants are: Benjamin Dranow, former Minneapolis businessman now serving a federal prison sentence for fraud and tax evasion; Calvin Kovens, a Miami Beach con tractor; Zachary Strate a New Orleans builder; Abe I. Weinblatt, a retired New York furrier now living in Miami Beach; Samuel Hyman, Miami Beach real estate operator, and S. George Burris, a New York accountant. OBITUARIES Mrs.

Style Show Winners Selected Twelve 4-H style show winners in home economics clothing projects were announced following the revue at the Rock County 4-H Fairgrounds Friday night.

The top four winners will not be announced until after competition at the annual style show Aug. 7, at the 4-H Fair. The style show was open to all 4-H clothing project girls 15 years and over, and to 14-year- olds enrolled in "Clothing Plus." More than 170 4-H girls paraded their style show entries before the judge, each girl modeling her own creation. ALIJ additional 75 family entries were judged. The family winner also will be announced at the 4-H Fair.

Miss Lenore Landry, UW clothing specialist, judged the revue. The 12 winners and their 4-H club, announced in alphalietical order, were: Linda Brown, Sandra Cox and Anita Sherburne, in County Court were Lawrence Beloit; Connie Drendel and Gail E. Olson. Kennet J. Passon ried to James W.

Skellv in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in October 1917. Prior to her marriage, she was a clerk for the board of education and later was a Parker Pen Co. employe until retiring Mrs. Skelly in 1954.

She was a charter member of the Catholic Woman's Club and a member of St, William's Catholic Church and its Altar Society, Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. C. Donald McCarthy, Janesville; a son, John Skelly, Shaker Heights, Ohio; and 10 grandchildren. Her husband died in 1950 and she was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Adams, in 1958, a son, James and a brother, William McCue. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m.

Mrs. Katherine Johnson WILLIAMS BAY-Mrs. Katherine Marie Johnson, 90, died Saturday morning in Sherwood Rest home, where she had lived the past 41 years.

Death followed a long illness. Her home here was at 123 Walworth Ave. She was bom June 29, 1874 in Cory, a daughter of Michael and Anna Marie Johnson, and on Nov. 15, 1893 in Williams Bay was married to Axel Johnson. He died in 1942.

Survivors are seven children. Miss Esther Johnson, Waukesha, Mmes. Florence Johnson, Prescott, Anna Avery, Chicago, Louise Broome, Royal Oaks, Ruth Hammerstrom, Genoa City, and A. Oscar Johnson, Chicago, and Frank Johnson, Lake Geneva. There are five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Calvary Community Church, the Rev. a Id Gillaspie officiating. Burial will be in East Delavan Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Sunday at the Dorrick-Haase Funeral Home. Lake Geneva, or after 12 noon Monday at the church. Mrs. Rosa Babler MONTICELLO Mrs. Rosa Babler, 90, a resident here for the past 70 years, died Thursday evening in the Four Winds Manor, Verona, where she had resided the past 18 months.

The former Rosa Waelti was born in Switzerland Dec. 27,1873, daughter of Jacob and Barbara Bieri Waelti, and was married in Monticello Sept. 16, 1892, to Otto H. Babler. He was a village blacksmith for many years, and predeceased Mrs.

Babler April 13, 1956. She was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses in Monroe, Surviving are a grandson, Norman B. Steussy, OOlympia, three great-grandchil- children; and a sister, Mrs. Anna Baumgartner, Monroe. Two daughters preceded her in death.

Fred Miller Classic Dignity Through Capable Service Harold Babcock EAST TROY Harold Babcock, 64, died Friday morning in the Burlington Hospital after a brief illness. Born on a farm in the Elkhom area Feb. 17, 1900, he was the son of Byron and Anna Lumsden Babcock. He attended school in the area and after graduation worked in Elkhorn as a mechanic for many years.

He was married June 14. 1922, to Alice Kilbride in Rockford, and they made their home in the Elkhorn area until 1934 when they moved to East Troy where he was a mechanic for the Bickerman Buick Co. for a number of years. He was manager of the Consumers Co-op of Walworth Co. in East Troy for 11 years.

In 1947 he became an ploye of the Village of East Troy and continued in that work until his death. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Peggy Wood, Kansas, and Mrs. Betty Voss, East Troy; two sisters. Miss Hazel Babcock and Mrs.

Lois Duray, both of Milwaukee. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Anderson- Rohleder Memorial Home, East Troy, the Rev. G. L.

Dabson Named District Music Department Head MILTON-MILTON a recent meeting of the school board, Richard Dabson was named as head of the instrumental music department in the district. A motion was adopted that band members unable to appear in uniform for any spec occasion are to share their uniforms with others in the organization. She was married to Leonard Sitzler Dec. 28, 1922 at Whitewater, and they farmed in this area until 1952 when they moved to the city of Whitewater. Steinke, 53, owner and operator of the Sportsmen Bar, unexpectedly in his home at 11 a.m. Friday of a heart attack. The son of August and Emma Hebbe Steinke he was bora Dec. 18, 1910, in Fort Atkinson. He was married April 21, 1934, in Belvidere, to Lydia Keuer of Fort Atkinson.

They resided Fort Atkinson until moving to Johnson Creek in July, 1950, to open his business here. He was a member of the Jefferson County Tavern League, Musician's Union, Johnson Crock Mutual Hose and St. John's Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife; a son, S. Sgt.

Dennis Steinke, with the USAF in Minneapolis, a daughter, Mrs. Ralph Klug, Watertown; five grandchildren; two brothers, Walter, of Sullivan, and Robert, of Janesville; and a sister, Mrs. Helen Soehnlein, Richland, Wash. One brother, Alvin, predeceased him. Services will be held at 2 p.m.

Sunday and at the church after noon on Monday. Mrs. Lisette Rickerman FORT ATKINSON-Mrs. Lisette Rickerman, 94, a local resident the past 30 years, died at 6 a.m. today in Forest Lawn Nursing Home where she had resided the past few years.

She was bora Dec. 12, 1869, in Brooklyn, N. and married Oct. 14, 1931, to Louis Rickerman. He died Feb, 22, 1957, She was a member of St, Paul's Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid Society, Surviving are two stepchildren, George Rickerman, Plymouth, and Mrs.

Arthur Taylor, Whitewater; and a brother, John Christdaum. Two sisters and four brothers predeceased her. Services wil be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Nitardy Funeral Home, the Rev. Henry Gieschen officiatmg.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Monday. Bicyclist Is Injured in Spill Fay Richard Strain Jr. suffered right shoulder fracture, hand and arm abrasions Thursday afternoon when a pedal broke on his bicycle on Afton Road.

The boy was pitched forward over the handlebars, deputies learned. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. Baritone Band Soloist Sunday The Janesville Municipal Band will play a concert at Lincoln- Tallman House at 1:30 p.m. Sunday as part of the program for the annual Ice Cream Social of the Rock County Historical Society. Featured soloist will be Dr.

G. Thomas Fisher, Janesville, ba.ss-baritone, who had a debut at Carnegie Hall and has soloed with the Beloit Symphony, The concert program will open with "The Star Spangled Banner" followed by a march, "The Klaxon," and a suite of historic marches. Dr. Fisher will then sing "Faith of Our Fathers," and 'Some Enchanted evening." The concert will continue with "Under the Double Eagle," a march by J. F.

Wagner; "La- Sorella," Gallini; "Songs from the Old Folks," "Mardi Gras" from the Mississippi suite, and "The Four Woodsmen," with a clarient quartet joining the band. Arrest Made in 1-Car Crash on Highway 14 Thomas D.

Brehm, 20, Kenosha, was charged with leaving the scene of a property damage accident and inattentive driving Saturday morning after his car went off Highway 14 just inside the Rock County line 12 miles east of Janesville, struck a road sign and a fence, and then left the scene about 2 a.m. His car was found by deputies shortly after 7 a.m. in a field some distance away. In another accident, John H. Franzen, 64, Gifford, told deputies at 3 a.m.

Saturday that he had just pulled off 1-90 onto Highways 11-14 near Palmer Park when a car driven by Norbert D. Trescher, 32, Avalon, struck the rear of his pickup truck. Damage was moderate, deputies said. Township Lowers Beer Age WATERTOWN The town of Watertown Board Friday rescinded a recent ordinance raising the minimum beer drinking age from 18 to 21, The action resulted from Monday night's closing of the Shady Nook bar by state beverage tax agents. The board had issued a liquor license to the bar when the age limit was raised.

However, the license was one more than the legal limit for liquor establishments allowed, in the town, Friday's action allows Ervin Beske, operator of the Shady Nook, to resume business as a teen-age bar, which the establishment was before the raising of the minimum beer age. School Addition and Budget on Board Agenda LAKE GENEVA A proposal to enlarge East View School, the election of a new board member and the adoption of the budget is expected to be on the agenda of the annual meeting of the Geneva Union School District 1 at 8 p.m. Monday at Denison Junior high school auditorium. Kenneth Connell is seeking the post on the board vacated when Edwin Traver announced he would not seek re-election. In addition to the enlargement of East View school, the board is also asking authorization to borrow money to build shower and locker rooms and storage space at the Como School.

Kentucky Guard Bivouacks Here Palmer Park resembled an Army camp for a few hours Friday night as several units of the Kentucky National Guard made a rest stop here en route back home from Camp Ripley, Minn. FLAGPOLE DAMAGED A 30-foot flagpole in front of the Harmony School was found bent double Friday. Deputies said a chain on the pole was apparently used to pull the top of the pole over. Boy, 10, Hero in Drowning Rescue ORFORDVILLE-A 10-year- old boy who cannot swim and fears the water is credited with having saved his 6-year- old brother from drowning while the boys were vacationing in Northern Wisconsin with their parents. Michael Hammell and his brother, Jim, sons of Mr, and Mrs.

Earl Hammell, Orford- viUe, were wading along a beach when Jim suddenly stepped into a deep hole. At first Michael thought Jim was just ducking his head under water, but when he failed to come up Michael forgot his fears, went under the water and pulled his brother to shallow waters. Neither their parents nor the lifeguard had detected the incident until Michael shouted for help when Jim started to struggle. Jini was treated by the lifeguard and pronounced out of danger. Michael does not swim but had learned the Cub Scout safety rules as a member of Den 2, Pack 151 in Orfordville.

$70 Stolen From Filling Station Theft of $70 from the Chief Station, 1103 Center was discovered at 5:55 a.m. Saturday by the operator. William Fosburgh, Rte. 4, Edgerton, who told police the bulk of the cash had been taken from a safe in the office. A key, used to open the safe, was still in the lock, he said, but was not one of his keys.

A desk drawer had been forced open and a coin changer taken. Entry was made by forcing a restroom window, police said. BeJoif Hurf in FalJ in Viaditon. MADISON-Linda Schenck, 16, Beloit, was treated at University Hospital for jaw and mouth injuries, including three broken teeth, after she tripped and fell on her bowling ball shortly before 8 p.m. Friday at Burr Oaks Bowling Alley.

AUTOMOBILE FIRE DELAVAN-Tho fire department answered a call at 6:35 pm Friday to the corner of Second and Washington streets to extinguish a fire in a 1960 auto belonging to Kenneth Cogar, 234 S. Terrace St. Faulty wiring apparently caused the blaze which damaged the carburetor, air cleaner and wiring. Cogar was not injured. Kills Children, Fails in Suicide DAYTON, Ohio (AP) Four children ranging in age from 10 months to 6 years were found dead in their beds early this morning, and police said theh- mother admitted killing them.

Police were called to the home of Mrs. Betty Perry, 27, after she reportedly told a neighbor she had killed her children. The youngsters, Stacey, 10 months; Carl Scott, 4, and Susan, 6, were found dead with ilastic bags tied over their leads. Police said Mrs. Perry told them she killed the children because she was despondent over money problems and a pending divorce.

Authorities said their preliminary investigation showed that the plastic bags had been tied over the children's heads while they slept. Mrs. Perry was taken to the Dayton State Hospital, Efforts were being made to learn the whereabouts of the husband. Detectives said Mi-s. Perry had attempted suicide after putting the plastic bags and pillow over the heads of each of the children.

They said she had slashed her wrists, turned on the gas in a stove and took a number of aspirin tablets before changing her mind and going to a neighbor's home. Evansville EVANSVILLE Mrs. Marie Roberts returned Thursday after spending a week visiting her mother, Mrs. Anna Swenberg at Sunny Side, who was observing her 75th birthday. Mr.

Academy suffered right arm injury late Friday night when his light motorcycle skidded on gravel at 624 S. Campaign Begins To Heat Up; Two Democrats Here Two Democratic candidates were in Janesville Saturday to visit with the man on the street and with party leaders.

The season for campaigning, especially for the September primary, is only now starting. Visitors were Sen. Lynn E. Stalbaum, Racine, candidate against Gerald Flynn for the Democratic nomination for Congress in the first district, and Kenneth P. Klinkert, Menomonee Falls, one of the primary opponents of Sen.

William Proxmire. Klinkert. making his first visit to Janesville and Beloit, said that he is interested in furthering the freedom of individuals and said that candidates should be more open and direct with the public in stating their views. He holds himself out to be an atheist, opposes religion in schools and government, and said that he is opposed to civil rights laws because they merely affirm rights which akeady are the property of free individuals. Atheists as well as minority races are victims of intrasions on these freedoms, he said.

Klinkert de-emphasized publicity he received on a declaration approving topless swim suits for women. He said that the opinion does agree with his belief in the freedom of individuals, however.
