McMillan Will Try for Third Base Schedule Should Be Made Public Soon 7 Special to ree Tre Ana Arbor Mich ebruary IS Despite the apparently inevitable Ios8 of Tommy Lothrop baseball work opened this week with the prospects of the brightest in years Naturally Coach Rickey was dis appointed at the failure of the star a third baseman to get through hisy semester examinations and the ab senee of Lothrop from the Infield Is bound to weaken the team por cuptibly However the loss is not us keenly felt as it otherwise would have been on account of the wealth of material both veterans and new candidates who have reported to Coach Rickey as being candidates lur places ou tbe team It will be impossible for several days yet tor eitner Hickey or Cup tain Hill to know definitely just wnat players will be eligible us full reports from tho examinations have not yet been made public Work will not be held up tnougn pending tne final report as Hickey is anxious that the men should gei a much indoor work as possible before erry field is reauy lor oc cupancy i rhe luss of Lothrop Is offset part ly by the news that 1'rdnk Linthi cum is to be eligible for the team this year Linthicum was the pitching mainstay during tne season of lb(J8 when Coach Lew McAllister still was in charge of the team Since that limo ho has been Ineligible but this year the chances are that he will again be able to play and in that case he should prove a valuable acquisition io uio sirengtn or me lvuid No Chance as Hurler There seems little chance Linthicum will win a nlace pitching staff as he cannot hope to beat out any one of the threeoterans of last team Smith IL Campbell or Verheyn In case iio Is eligible then It is probable that Rlckcy will try him either at second base or in tho outfield for he is a fair fielder and a good hit ter and knows the game thor uughly If team is not far and away stronger than the aggregation captained by Enzcnroth last year It will bo because of the Infield In 191C tho Infield was the most vulnerable part of the team despite tho fact that at first and third Lothrop and Hill were stars This year with Lothrop gone the problem of developing a strong in ner works is even more difficult 'than that which faced Rickey a rear ago and considerable doubt Is being felt as to tho outcome captain Hill xvlll be kept at first base of course which is sufficient to stave off competition for that position" 'Hill Is better than an average fielder and his hitting ana base running last year were only a triile below the marks set by Lothrop and that despite tlie factthat Lothrop is much lighter and faster than Hill He look like a hitter at the plate as he prefers to go after the ball with a chopping swing but he gets away with it and almost invariably makes life miserable for college pitchers whenever ho faces them in a pinch Rickeyi Undecided The certainty that Lothrop will be out of tho game is too recent to have given lUckey any oppor tunity to decide what hewill do relative to the third basing proposition but present indications are that McMillan will give fome one a battle for the place The little quarterback is more natural ly a shortstop than a third base man or at least most of his pst experience has been at short field and If Lothrop were to be eligible Rlckov probably would have moved Marlin from shortstop to second and let McMillan Drake and Johnny Campbell fight it out for old position That combination would have looked good but the loss of Ioth rop has eliminated that possibility ana some sum in piunu wm necessary as a result little Is known as to except from his work in high school and on his class team last year he now Is touted as the most likely candidate for place at third base In case ho makes good It still will be pos sible to shift Marlin to second base from which position It is thought lhAt his throwing to first will be less erratic than from deop short while either Drake or Johnny Campbell Is better at shortstop than at second Coach Rickey refuses to dis couraged by outlook and in view of the fact that he turned nut a comparatively strong team last vear out of entirely green ma terial his optimism is not first day that the satfad was together Rickey looked them over and remarked that it was the finest looking college prospect he had ever seen some of these new men prove disappointments the hold overs from last team are go ing to have to work to hold their he said outlook certainly Is much brighter than a year ago and if things break even ly for us we ought to have a re markably strong team i The indoor work will continue as long as the winter lasts but Coach RlcKey and Captain Hill are hoping that the spring will be early enough that the men can get at least two weeks of work on erry field before the opening game of the season Just when the season will open still is a matter of con jecture although It Is prooable that It will be the first day of the East er vacation about the middle of April Athletic director Bartelme Is not yet ready to make public the base ball schedule but It was intimated early in the year that Michigan this year would continue the policy of sending the team south during the spring vacation meeting Vanderbilt university Central university of Kentucky and other southern schools and also of sending the team east Jate in May for the Im portant games of the season Ac cordingly Inasmuch as there has been nothing given out to indicate a contrary intention It Is likely that the schedule will differ only slightly from that which Michigan has had for the last three or four seasons Meet Two Strong Nines It already has been announced that the Wolverines would meet Princeton and Brown on tho east ern trip playing Princeton at Princeton and Brown at providence and closing nays of tho eastern in vasion It Is also settled that the Cornell game will be missing from the schedule this year so that un less Director Bartelme has added other games of which nothing has been said Michigan will play Princeton Brown Syracuse and two or three Ohto institutions on the long trip Announcement of the Case baseball schedule this week Indi cates that tho Cleveland institution is to have two games with Michigan again this year one at Cleveland and one at Ann Arbor and although Director Bartelme is neither au thenticating nor denying the an nouncement until the Michigan board ratifies the entire Wolverine schedule it practically Is settled that the two games with the Buck eyes will appear on the Michigan list As the road schedule this year probably will be almost identical with that in 1909 almost the only curiosity regarding the baseball engagements is as to the games that will be played at erry ield Notre Dame will not be on list and inasmuch as for the lat two years the South Bend athletes have been the only ones to give Michigan an interesting argument in baseball on tho home lot It is interesting to wonder what Insti tution will take the place of Coacn men However inasmuch as the baseball season is less than two montns distant it is certain within a week or two Director telme will be ready to make lie the entire program of the son Kraenzlef Hartl Task As was the case with Coach Rickey last year Dr Alvin Kraenz lein stepped into a difficult for his first year as coach of a Mich igan athletic team He not only was confronted by the difficulty of succeeding Keene itzpatrick In the affections or the Michigan stu dents but also of developing a winning track team out of material which In all but: two instances seems to be only mediocre Last year the Wolverines had to depend largely on the work of Joe Horner and Ralph Craig and unless present indications misleading this year will be a repetition There are plenty of new men in college who have shown ability in track athletics but they are all in eligible this year under the fresh man eligibility rule or instance If Kraenzlcln could use Kohler in the weights Blake In the
