26 about 3,000 maintenance workers of the Miami division of Pan American Airways threatening to strike Thursday morning, the air line declares its layoff policy must be continued "if we arc to survive economically." One of the principal complaints in the proposed strike is the discharge of about 500 of the total of 7,000 employed here, which PAA officials said was caused by the cancellation of war contracts. The workers have hsked that their demands be met by o'clock tonight. Charles N. Smolikoff, CIO director in Miami, The demands include cancellations of lay-off notices of the 500 workers and 48 hours' pay for 40 hours work. In its first official statement regarding the threatened strike, PAA said it would not curtail its lay-off policy and it was "utterly unreasonable for anyone to expect the company to continue on the payroll any person or persons whose services are not required." Abraham Lincoln was appointed postmaster at New Salem.
