c----) i 1 4 In 1880 Rev Kirby came to Salt Lake City from New York to act as assistant minister of St Marks Episcopal cathedral With him lame his wife the former Virginia Rowland of Philadelphia Mrs Kirby's mother Mrs Rowland visited Salt Lake City and becarde interested in the educational development of the intermountain area With the aid of Bishop Tuttle then bishop of Montana Idaho and Utah she obtained an adobe house on 1st ave and A street which had been built by Brigham Young for one of his daughters Opened in 1881 The building which is now the residence was named Rowland hall in honor of Mr Rowland's husband Benjamin Rowland The school formally opened in September 1881 with 28 girls 25 day students and three boarders corn-prising the student body Miss Lucille Marsh of Philadelphia was the first principal The first graduate Daisy Senter (Mrs Bascomb) received her diploma in 1882 Bishop Tuttle was succeeded by Bishop Leonard in 1888 It was through his efforts Rowland hall received in 1900 a bequest of $35- 000 from the estate of Felix Brunot of Pittsburgh Pa With this money the east building the present school building was erected In 1892 the Bishop Leonard medal to the girl with the highest scholastic average in the senior class was awarded for the first time to Ethel Lynn (Mrs Edgar Hills) Grovi th of School The chapel was erected between the two buildings and dedicated in 1910 by her daughter to the memory of Virginia Lafayette Rowland Some time later a beautiful organ was donated by Col and Mrs A Wall Lovely colored windows have been installed throughout the years increasing the beauty and grace of our chapel In 1912 the choir and student body government were organized The first president was Elsa Bamberger (Mrs Micheal) In 1948 the Bishop
