FONDA. fmirlh (r.t financial circles throughout this country. Strong men, firm houses, and rich corporations, were tottering and falling around us. Sound banks were assailed, and a suspension of specie payments demanded, so as to create a general wreck, and mingle the fortunes of the sound with the rotten. Everybody was scared, and great was the disaster that followed.

During the six Tnonths that pre ceded October, 1857, the following failures, with the liabilities annexedjlwere recorded to have 6c curred in the United States Number of Failures Amount oj Reported. There never was a financial crisis which came upon, us with such sudden and terrible force, and departed so quickly. This only shows, however, the mighty recuperative energies of the country. We are a fast people in every sense of the word-r-fast to get rich, and fast to get poor; fast in passing from one extreme to another, in all that we undertake or endure. The quantity of money in this country, at the present timeis beyond all precedent. The same is true of England, France, and: Germany, the principal money centers of the world.

Vast quantities of this mouey are now idle capital. It, cannot remain unemployed. It must seek invest ment at an early day. Much of it be turned to manufacturing purposes that" has heretofore been otherwise employed, and much will seek real estate, railroad bonds, and bank stocks. For some time to come, however, speculators in real estate will not run wild, and fancy stocks will not be touched.

Genuine and; unquestioned investments will begin and progress before speculation becomes prevalent. It will require some time to make those who have been bit, forget the past and it is possible, indeed, that the next. speculators in fancy lots, and fancy stocks, and fancy mines, and fancy houses, will be a new class, of men. It is vain, however, for the millions of gold and' silver and paper now in the world to be expected to remain idle. The gold and silver and the paper must.be invested, instead of being lent at a low rate of interest upon call in our great cities and when investment begins at the financial centers, it will soon radiate all over the country.

An Ego Within ax Ego. -On Monday Mr. H. L. Sturgett's Brahma hen exerted herself in an ex traordinary manner.

She dropped an egg measuring eight inches from end to end, and six and a half inches about the middle. But the magnitude of this egg is not its greatest feature. Within the outer shell there is another perfectly formed egg itself of considerable size. The Brahma; hen aforesaid cackles and flaps her wings on Fifth street, beyond Broadway. Office No. 527, southeast corner Main and Third etrc-ets, Louisville, where travelers can examine map and get further correct information. aicb.26 dly l-Rading Matter on every page, Our Water Works. We have received and read the first annual report of the President and Directors of the Louisville Water Company, made on the 6th of Ooto-ber, 1358, to the stockholders. It is a pamphlet of only sis pages, but within this short space all.

the information that is needed with regard to the Water Work3 is embraced. It has been two years since the Water Company was organized. The capital stock aubscribed. after the organization was $555,100. Of this sum the city of Louisville subscribed $550,000, and private individuals the other $5,100.

Iu July, 1857, the city issued thirty year six. percent, bonds to the amount of $672,000 for her stock subscription. Of these bonds $519,000 have been sold, and the company yet have 153,000 for ssle. By the sale of these bonds the company was enabled to purchase SO acres of ground for their grand reservoir, and 28 acres for their en" gine house, and to push forward the entire enterprise with energy and dispatch. We cannot better set forth the progress of the work, than to quote the language of the report before us upon this subject Seven-eiehlhs of the water pipes for the whole city are cast, and the entire contract will be fully completed the course ol six weexs.

inestop valves are all made. One third of the work upon the reservoir is already done, and anotner tmra will be nut uo this fall. The foundation of the engine bouse is advancing rapidly, and it is be lieved it will be nmsnetl tms iau me masonry, cerf-iinly, will be carried up so high as to be beyond the reach of high water. In three weeks the laying of the SO-inch pipe from the engine house to the reservoir will be finished, and if the weather will permit, it is intended to lay the 20-inch inain from the reservoir to the city limits this season. The pipes will be laid over the whole city during next summer.

The Cornish engines are in a very satisfactory state of progress, as many machinists as can be usefully employed being at work upon tlii-m. There is no branch of the work which is not being pushed as fust as can be done by money and the exertions of efficient contractors. The whole work, when completed, is estimated by the engineer to cost 700,000. It will be seen by the report, that the company has not so much means. The stock subscription by the city, and by individuals, is only 555,100 in the aggregate.

This leaves a deficit of $144,900. It will be necessary, therefore, to raise about 150,000 more to complete the waterworks, and if this, sum is raised, we are assured that water will be distributed over the whole city by the 4th of Jaly, 1860. It will be well, therefore, for tax payers to think of this 150,000 in connection with the 8300,000, to be voted for on the Cth of November next for Gov. Helm's Memphis branch road. Our taxes now stand thus: Advalorem $292,526 Railroad 71,468 Waterworks 27,850 Gas Works 27,859 Licenses, etc 100,000 $519,705 If the branch railroad ordinance is carried this sum will he raised to $593,705, and then we will be called upon for $150,000, in behalf of the water works.

If this sum were divided into two years the total taxation would be and if all were paid in one year the'sum total would be $743,705. Well, now, this sum looks large to us, and we think it will look huge to all those sensible taxpayers who would like to have some returns for the burdens so long imposed upon them. It will be well, therefore, for the tax-payers to consider whether or not the water works must stop, when their present means are exhausted, for the wan of 150,000, or whether they will vote double that sum to the Memphis branch railroad two or more years before it is wanted This is the question for them to consider, and we now put it to them to reflect upon until they go to the polls, on the 6th of next month, to vote $300,000 to Gov. Helm's Memphis branch. The financial condition of the Water Company is, at this time, most excellent.

It will be learned from the following tables, which reflect much credit on the president and directors, and all con cerned: DISPOSITION' MADE OP BONDS. Paid 25 to A. 24, in which that gentleman speaks of his jouruey to that point, en route to attend to the investigation of certain charges made against Mr. Neighbors, the supervising agent of Indian affairs at San Antonio. The investigation is appointed to take place at Camp Cooper, Texas, at which place Mr. Neighbors is invited to be present during the examination of witnesses, etc. Mr.

Hawkins went to Memphis, intending to take passage thence for Fort Smith in the coaches of the Cali-. fornia overland mail company, but was do so, because the badness of the road prevented the company from carrying passengers from that point. He, therefore, traveled by steamboat to Napoleon, and thence to Ues Arc, where he took ihe company's coaches for Fort Smith. From the! latter place to Camp Scott he intended to proceed: by an extra coach, kiudly furnished him by the company. Election.

According to the best reports we have from the several counties in Ohio, the majority of the Fusion State ticket will be about twenty thousand. At the Presidential election the majority of the same party was forty -five thousand. The same ratio of increase will give the Democracy the State in I860 by five thousand majority. Iowa Election. The Chicago Times, of Saturday, is ot the opinion that Leffingwell (Democrat) is elected to Congress from the second district of Iowa.

He has gained four thousand votes in eleven counties on Fremont's majority, which was six thousand in the district.
