Vernon Lions Club was granted a charter on February 7, 1924 and thereby became a member of an International organization founded only 3 years earlier in Chicago by Melvin Jones. H. W. (Doc) Faulkner was our first president with 24 members. The Mt.

Vernon Lioni Club hat consistently had as its goal, Service to its Community, its Nation and to the World. It it an underlying belief among our officers that as individuals we can be of service in many ways; Collectively we can be of much greater service. An example is work with the blind and with people with poor vision. Our own club, throughout its history, has furnished glassets to school children who needed them and whose parents found it difficult or impossible to furnish. Then, through lion international, we help support the Seeing Eye Dog program, the White Canes for the Blind program and the School for reading by the Braille System.

Working with youth has consistently been a program for the Mt. Vernon Lions Club. Our club has consistently supported and in some instances sponsored scouting. At one time we built and maintained Camp Lion with a cabin at the north reservoir. The cabin was equipped with bunks and boy scouts used it extensively when on over night hikes.

Other work with youth includes: 1. Furnishing rain coats and hats for patrol boys. 2. The annual Gridiron Dinner. 3.

Banquet to honor the upper scholastically of the High School seniors and their parents. 4. Helping promote the Youth Development tion. The Objects 1. To create and foster a spirit of "generous consideration" among the peoples of the world through a study of the problems of international relationships.

2. To promote the theory and practice of the principles of good government and good citizenship. 3. To take an active interest in the civic, social and moral welfare of the community. The Lions Club has always urged its members to active tn other organizations or enterprises that serve Mt.

Vernon. Our club has furnished more Presidents for the Mt. Vernon Chamber of Commerce and the U.nited Fund Organization than any other. Good fellowship is a definite part of Lions activities. It helps business and professional competitors in our community to work together for community betterment.

By means of Zone, District, State and national meetings, understanding of the problems of others is accomplished, thereby helping promote good citizenship at home and a peaceful world. The aims, objectives and attainments of lions International appeals to right thinking men. The result is that Lions International has grown to become the largest service club in the work with 701,213 members in 17,806 clubs in 125 countries of the world. Mt. Vernon had only 2 service clubs for approximately 20 years.

During that long period of time many quipped that the other club owned Mt. Vernon but the lions ran it. Today several other clubs are making substantial contributions to Mt. Vernon and Environs. We are happy to work with them in helping make our community a better place in which to live.

of Lionism 4. To unite the members in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding. 5. To provide a forum for the full and free discussion of all matters of public interest, partisan politics and sectarian religion alone excepted. 6.

To encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in business and professions; provided that no club shall hold out as one of its objects financial benefits to its members. Past Presidents of Lions Club 1924.25-H. W. (Doc) Faulkner 1925-26-Rev. Meyer Madsen Rev.
