contest in the Big Ten for either team After the Crim son wave had weaved its way down the field in the first nine minutes of the first quarter for six markers the Hoosier aggregation was outclassed but not outfought It was the remarkable accuracy of eye which gave Indiana a lead which threatened to demoralize the Minnesota' eleven Twice did this wonder dropkicker step back behind his defense and boot the oval clearly between the goal posts for the first markers of the contest liven this incentive toward victory wasn't enough to halt the Minnesota back once they gained possession of the ball They: marched down the field for three touch downs and ended the contest with a victory to 6 Indiana fought back bitterly against the smashing attack of the Minnesotabacks but to no avail for the defense was unable to check the onslaughts of Phillips Ruben and Lampi This trio gamed on end runs off tackle and through the center of the Indiana line Il was due to many severe penalties in flicted upon Minnesota which prevented them from piling up another touchdown at least Once the Minnesota men plowed through and over the goal line lor a touchdown only Lo be called back because some overeager Gopher'lorward was off side On two other oc casions Minnesota was in the very shadow ot the Indiana line and rushing toward a touchdown when penalities for holding set them back where they had no chance to make the count Indiana Holds for Downs Twice when the Gohper satellites were smashing their way toward a score the Indiana men held for downs but only on these two occasions was the Indiana defense able to check the onslaughts of the men from the North After the first nine minutes of play when the Indiana men were rushing the Gophers off their feet the Hoosiers were never in the hunt for their de lense especially on' the right side of the line was unable to check the slash ing attack of Phillips and Lampi while Rubens was successful in darting on off center for gains when a first down was needed Minnesota clearly demonstrated su periority in straight football but was woefully weak on forward passes four being tried and none of them completed On the other hand Indiana made sev eral nea gains on passes which com pletely battled the Gopher players The sun shone with brilliancy upon the field shedding warming rays which led much to the comfort of the great crowd There was just enough tinge in the air to make it not too hot for the contestants Beautiful colors draped from the garments of nun and women lent to the game an air of college life which Indianapolis as a rule sees lit tle of It was strictly an Indiana crowd for Minnesota was weakly represented in colors and spectators However bril liant work on the part of the Gopher players was always rewarded by ap plause However great cheeringfrom tho stands was meeted out to the Indiana gladiators when they were rushing the Gophers off their feet bya slashing attack which had only a short duration It left when Minnesota began its dash which was never checked except by penalties The defeat eliminates Indiana from all possible chance of a high rating in the Big Ten Conference while Minnesota remains In the running and will meet Iowa State In battle next Saturday Although the tide of battle changed late in the first period toward the Go pher players the Indiana men never let up in their fighting spirit Even when Minnesota made its third touchdown of the game the Indiana men were bat tling with all they had in an effort to take another swing scoreward gain its feet Indiana had pulled one of the few trick plays of the game When the two teams lined up for the kickoff with Indiana doing the kicking Instead of fierce booting the ball Mathys dashed in and kicked the ball at an ahgle for an inside kick Pope scooped up the bounding oval and rushed down the side of the field for forty two yards before1 he was downed With the hall on sixteen yard line ami on the side of the field the inneapolis fcnse again strengthened 'The Crimson team failed to gain but took the ball to the center of the field where MaLhys again booted the ball between the bars for a goal from field Gophers Begin Rush Up to this time Minneapolis had not gained possession of the hall on the next kickoff Lampi grabbed the oval and then Minnesota began its rush down the field Smashing attacks on the right side of Indiana's line carried the ball to the yard line wtiero Indiana held After Indiana punted Minneapo lis gained possession of the ball and again began a dash Rubens carried the ball over and kicked the goal The second quarter saw Minnesota close to a score but the fight and de termination of the Crimson prevented a score In the third period Minnesota employed its line smashing attack with sensational open field running Capt Lampi and counted another goal This time Ruben failed to kick goal although from a perfect angle Shortly before the end of the' fourth quarter the Minneapolis aggregation after advancing the ball into Indiana territory only to receive several penal ties rushed the ball across the goal line This time Ruben miss although from a difficult angle! Shortly after the touchdown time was called with the ball near the center of the field To Minton Mathys and Williams goes the most credit for the fight pul up by the Crimson The line was woefully weak and unable to check Minnesota in their shifts Ruben Lampi Phillips and Hanke played sensationally for Minnesota while the defense throughout the entire line was too strong for In diana to penetrate irst Period Amid the cheers of attending throng the Minnesota eleven was the first to en ter the field and ran through snappy sig nals while the I Band was inarchtiig around the field Indiana followed closely afterwards onto the field amid a wild round of cheering from the east side of the field Gapt Minton won the toss and chose to defend the south goal Ruben booted the kickoff high into the air to the ten yard line and Williams returned the ball to his twcnty eight yard Urie Indiana opened up its attack but a pass from Minton to Pope was incompleted Min nesota was penalized five yards giving In diaua 'first down Minton smashed off tackle but gained only one yard Minne sota was again penalized for off side play nutting the ball on the forty six yard line Williams failed to gain and then carried the ball again this time ripping off tackle for four yards Minton un corked a beautiful pass to Williams who ran through the loll side of defense for thirty yards before he was downed on eighteen yard line Minton tailed to gain and Williams lost fouti yards Oss took place at end lor Minnesota An mompleted pass by Indiana brought the ball to the center of the field where Mathys stood on his thirty five yard line and booted the oval clearly between the posts for the first score of the game Score: Indiana 3: Minnesota 0 Here Indiana pulled one of the few trick plays nf the gnc when It executed a ri on side kick which netted I forty two yards Mathys booted (he ball and scooped the bounding oval from the air and raced down the field shaking over several tacklers before he was downed on sixtren yard line Minnesota held and with the ball in the center of the field on the twenty yard line Mathys again used his toe to advantage for an other goal from the field Score Indiana 6 Minnesota 0 ierce kickdd oft to Lampi on his five yard line and he returned twenty eight yards Here Minnesota started a dash for the Indiana goal but was held on the eight yard line after Lampi Phillipa and Ruben had smashed through the Indiana defense for terrific gains Kyle punted to thirty two yard line Again Minnesota started a determined rush when Lampi dodged and cut his way through for a twenty yard gain putting the ball on eleven yard line Phillips made five yards off tackle and Lamp! three Ruben plunged through the middle of the line for a touchdown and proceeded to kick goal Score Minnesota 7 Indiana 6 Shortly after Ruben kicked off to Wil liams the quarter ended with the ball in possession on thir ty five yard line Score end of first quarter Minnesota 7 Indiana 6 Second Period Lamp!
