their use There was for a time a postal note on which very little writing had to be done and the sum of money was readily punched out which one could procure with very little delay But that was probably too great a convenience to the public The Postoince Department abolished it in favor of a form on which there is a good deal of writing and the edge of which has to be torn very slowly and carefully in detaching it from the book In which it comes because the amount of the order is indicated on the margin across the end of the order It is a matter of several minutes' standing before a postoffice window to get a money order and the of a cheek If be is in a position to send the country remitter will pay little attention to the invitation to send money order instead latter This paper on Saturday contained the opinions of several merchants that they are not fairly treated in the determination of the banks to charge them for (vitae-Hone They keep a balance at the bank and feel that the use of that money should be deemed a compensation for the cost of collection One merchant bas written to his bank that he has been invited to deposit his money with a trust company and get 2 per cent a year on his balances and if the bank Is going to charge him for collecting cheeks he sees no reason why he should not withdraw his money and deposit it with the trust company This raises the practical question whether the banks can enforce their rule They are confident they can The question whether this charge ought to be made is quite and duty do uot come into the problem at all It is like fixing a price entirely a matter of bargaining between two parties each of whom will take as good care of himself as he can If the banks can make their customer pay for collecting checks they will do so and if the trust companies or banks in other cities or competitors of the banks of any other form are willing to do this business for nothing it will be evident enough that the banks ought not to collect a percentage on all checks It is very plain that the bank depositors are going to take as good care of themselves as they can and if they can got their checks collected for nothing or if they can earn enough on the balances to pay for their collections they are going to do it The merchant above referred to expleined to his bank that he could get enouth interest from the trust company to pay the bank what it would charge for collecting his cheeks so that he felt easy as to the future but be had a little curiosity to know where the banks were going to come in This is one of the experiments the results of which can never be foreold with any degree of ileolITACy: we can find out how it will work only by working it for a York Journal of Commerce HENDERSON KY LEXINGTON 'VENN
