Through tbe proof of its benefleeiice In healing me To thoBe who urge the ol'atins of materia medics I Will say that the most intense devotee thereto could not possibly complain of any lack of as well finding no response either to the physical needs or to the ''immortal longings'' within me I sought Christian Science as a last hope utterly ignorant of it and its methods surprised to learn that there was a metaphysical system of I had never heard ol the power of thought To me It had always seemed that help must come through something tangible risible to material sense I did all that was required of bought the precious book Science and Health'' ana read it daily It was at first "obscure abstract and dark" but gradually the "light that never was on sea or land" began to dawn on my awakening thought Tbe potency of Divine Truth was felt through evry portion of my being Strength courage and hope gradually day by day were flowing in a tide of Joy Into ray consciousness I shall never forget the first time that without fatigue I walked a mile (after three weeks' treatment) an experience unknown for years I knew that Love was the healing principle the God of Christian Science and that It had come to me through his word In Mrs Eddy book More than ten years have elapsed since then and throughout all the varied experiences of that period I have never been darkened to those two facts I knew the Truth had come again to human consciousness with healing on Its beams of light and that Mrs Eddy was the Anointed Reve-lator to the age The Science of Being was rev alt 1 and too night at Wcosley'a Halt RAILROAD NOTE Beware of imitation jam tuneAHt sons nam otw vosk and are looking for divine possibilities and they are here In Christian Science What Is Christian Science? All great truths are very like the stars above the dust and din and discord of earth complications and mutations belong to the material existence not to Truth Christian Science Is no exception to this rule It Is tbe simple grandeur of the law of Infinite Good acknowledged lived applied The same law that thundered from Sinai "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" Spirit Good The same law of love that came In the overture of the angels announcing the the Good-spelt of "Peace on earth good will to men" Tbe same law of life and truth brought and written in our hearts and lives in Christian Science An angel message to a sin-sick struggling world: the law of good alone natural and real: the redeemed from the lawless law of sin and death This law of Good Is and ever was and ever will be an eternal force working for righteousness Like the principle of mathematics which takes no notice of the errors of calculations or the principle of music which cognises no discords this Infinite law or principle that Is Good cognising only its own Immortal harmony by that very inherent perfection Is an eternal corrective of all discord It works and acts forever in the immutable order of never violating always fulfilling Its own harmonious unswerving behests or law: destroying only the errors that have no reality nor place in Principle or Truth but vanishing into their native nothingness prove that they bad no existence except in a false human consciousness How sublime It Is to contemplate this Immutable who needs no instructions nor petitions from mortals but is without variableness or turning "Who can Instruct the mind of the Lord or say unto bint What doest tbou?" But we can correct our own false estimate of God and his glorious universe and majesty and law and rise out of the false sense of discord Into the "gkirlous liberty of tte sons of God" If to know him aright is life eternal (ben discord and sin must be the result of a misapprehension of him How restful in the midst of our human strivings to know that our Ood is not (in the words of the apostle James) tbe author of confusion but of peace and Joy "that every gcJpd and every perfect gift cometh down from the father of lights" Of bis own will begat he us with the word of truth that we might be a kind of first-fruits of his that he has pronounced bis creation Good because It Is the emanation of his own omniscient wisdom Jesus' entire ministry was a scientific demonstration of this law of Life and Love and the understanding and recognition of the power of this law to destroy human ills was and is his rich legacy to mofthls and the only complete demonstration of the Science of Being It changes our old sense of miracles by revealing the naturalness of Good to destroy evil and Truth to destroy error To Good evil would be a in our old sense of a violation of law or lawlessness Jesus' demonstrations of this universal eternal law Bhows Its avallablllty for all time and all men and reveals it as the universal panacea The advent of Truth to human consciousness Is always met by the corresponding claims of error When Jesus heard the voice proclaiming his sonshlp he was Immediately bd up to be tempted of the that Is the revelation of Truth also revealed the mysteries of evil to bo met and destroyed Ab soon as the Revelator John saw the God-crowned woman he also saw the dragon warring with the divine Ideal When Christian Science brought its luminous revelation of the power of divine mind its full orbed light brought out of their hidden recesses the subtlest claims of error Old Theosophy lifts its head drowsy with hoary centuries from oriental sands with Its enchantments and endless struggles and interminable karmas to he judged by the Christ shrink into darkness before the voice that says Now are we the sons of God? Now not shall and time shall be no more The evils of mesmerism and hypnotism with their subtle dangers are alarming even tbe medical faculty who have tried to utilise them and the evil results are quickly banishing them from conscientious minds One human will governing another Is perhaps the most dangerous factor on earth robbing the victim of health independence morale ond finally ef reason lis recent statements show Spiritualism is the opposite of Christian Scieuce which acknowledges one Spirit one Ood and the white Christ enthroned In Christian Science Invites a frightened world in to the ark of safety the understanding of one power one mind one God who is taking unto himself his great power and does and will reign gov-itning all In scientific harmony by divine taw tt would take more time than we have this evening to refute the many absurd misrepresentations of Christian Science sent out ignorant ly and Willfully But I will say that wc do not claim to have overcome all sin-sick-noss and death: It is a great step in advancing Truth to admit that they may be destroyed and we may rejoice in the glorious hope and understanding that God does not send them for that only good peaee harmony and tienlth can flow or emanate from the divine mind Is clearly taught in the scriptures Jesus proved God or the Christ mind to lie their destroyer not their cause: One Divine Causation is the basis of Christian Science We do claim however that we have a divine method tar transcending any other system for overcoming these Ills and Anally destroying Ihem for everything Is to be put under the feet of Christ and his reign be established on' earfh This Is Jesus' prayer The conclusion of every message to the seven Churches In Revelation Is this: Hear what Spirit saltb to the churches To him that over-eonn'Hi will I give to eat of the tree of fe that is in the Paradise of God To blm that 't' uiunner or aeanng witn tats great theme The scientiflc statement of Being as In Science and Health is the crystallization of the great discovery of Christian Science and Is the sword of Spirit: the word of God "quick and powerful dividing asunder Soul and sense" separating the real from the unreal light from darkness as in the beginning or true genesis of man "There is no life truth Intelligence of substance in matter All is infinite Mind and Its infinite manliestatlon for God la all in all Spirit is immortal Truth matter Is1 mortal error Spirit is the real and eternal: matter Is the unreal and temporal Spirit is God and man is his image and likeness beace man is spiritual and not material" and This is a refutation and denial of Pantheism In every form All reel progress for time and eternity here and everywhere is and mustbe In the understanding and demonstration of this statement of scientific Being It Is the key that unlocks the heavenly gates that the King of Glory may enter in It la the way that Jeans walked and is the only way out of matter Into mind--out of matter and its concomitants discord suffering Into eternal harmonious spiritual and perfect Being The charge that Mrs Eddy claims to be or that Christian Scientists olsJni for her to be "the Christ or Messiss" is' absolutely without foundation Christian Science in Its platform teaches that Christ is God's eternal spiritual Idea forever tn the bosom of the Fsther incorporeal Illuminating the prophets and seers of all ages with the light of divine understanding So It is absolutely impossible then to claim that a visible personality today is the incorporeal or Invisible Christ But we do feel that no one on earth to-day manifests so much of the Christly character and Is so worthy of the love and gratitude of humanity as Rev Mary Baker Eddy tbe discoverer and founder of Christian Science She w0 gentle so refined so exquisite yet so filled with the courage born of unspeakable lore for humanity so comprehensive in her grasp of divine things so wonderfully endowed with that Infinite patience that must characterize all great "We needs must love the highest beat" Christian Science is sometimes called a woman's with the mild insinuation thst women are not logical I think I can quickly show that both these statements are incorrect It is said that in most of the large cities the Christian Science churches have a larger proporion of men as members and in attendance than any other denomination and tbe personnel of Mrs Eddy's last class of which I was so fortunate as to be a member was certainly remarkable for the fine quality of masculine thought that characterized Judges distinguished on the legal bench astute clear-headed and logical: editors alert quick to discern the signs of tile times physicians who vonscientiously recognizing the fallacy and inadequacy of material modes of medicines have sacrificed sn apparent sense of prosperity for this divine Christly method of dealing with human ills ministers of the goapel who have seen in It the second advent of truth ushering in the reign of righteousness of Mind and have relinquished the praise of men for the cross that leads to the crown young men placing on the altar the first fruits of their young efforts and even now reaping the reward of those who "seek first the kingdom of Ood" business men who recognize that the hour Is here when the upright -hail rule and that Christianity means prosperity as well as health for sit is and must be harmony when men work in accord with the divine Principle We are told that "there Is a wisdom of man that is foolishness with God" The very beginning of Inspired history Is suggestive of the feminine quality of the Creative Mind when God the eternal Love brooded over the face of be waters forming the divine concept In that Wonderful allegory of Adam and Eve the woman was first to see tho divine logic that evil could not emanate from God and therefore received the promise that her seed should "bruise the serpent's head" Adam raid "The woman whom thou gavest to me did tempt me" thus charging God with erB but the woman meekly said "Tbe serpent beguiled me and I did cat" This absolute logic of Eve led to the promise trhlrh was fulfilled In the advent of Jesus who came to destroy the works of the devil error or serpent Truth never destroys anything that is true it cannot It only destroys the illusion the false witness that calumniates God Snd mas Nothing is more clearly taught than that the discords of earth result from the serpent or material sense reasoning that to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil the belief that evil Is as real as good -makes one Wise and as gods The Immediate result of this sophistry was and Is expulsion from and murder The sword of Spirit guarded and guards the tree of life from this error of belief Whvt can ho the only remedy for this same condition that faces us to-day? The same old pantheistic phlloEophy that sought and seeks to unite good and evil spirit and matter and call this unison man: and a material unl-erse discordant and perishable convulsed with strife poverty and disease? Are not tbe fruits most unsatisfactory? Nothing can so concern humanity as to find the remedy for this condition Christian Science alone In Its absolute denial of the commingling of good and evil mind and matter and its affirmation of God's Good's omnipotence omnipresence and infinity can annul tbe curse and restore lost Eden or better still reveal eternal harmony This Infinite logic In Christian Science of perfect God and perfect man perfect eauoe and perfect effect perfect Principle and perfect Idea Is the light of the world and it must be the bals of every thought This divine logic of this science of Infinity has come to this age through the It could not come any ether way In tbe beginning the Creative manifested himself in both the masculine and feminine Quality of thought The Truth has Directors of the A Meet and Catarrh power and the Bible is luminous with records of tbe might of Mind Medical works illustrate it by such Instances as this: "A mother was nursing her child when suddenly becoming infuriated or moved by some strong painful emotion her nourishment was immediately rendered so poisonous that the child was thrown Into convulsions" We remember that the fair tresses of the unhappy Marie Antoinette were turned white in a single night by terror and agonized thought These and many such Instances may well "give us pause" and by the law of oppotltes we may rejoice In the vision of a glorified humanity when we will see the phenomenon of man and the universe controlled by when we will destroy sin and sickness at the same time by rising out of selfishness envy pride and ambition Into universal unselfish love peace and good will to men It was the spell of Good or the the understanding of the power of Love that Christ Jesus brought to the world-healing blessing redeeming from sin sickness and sorrow While no Christian Selonti't would Ignore the philanthropy skill and sincerity of many of the medical faculty we cannot forget how despairingly after years of experience many of the most eminent among them leave on record their double as the real utility of medicine Dr Oliver Wendell Holmes wittily condemns its use by saying "it would be botler for humanity If all the medicine were thrown Into the sea: but very bad for the while Benjamin Franklin who had very advanced views on curative methods and connected pure living and thinking with good health said "God curea the patient and the doctor takes the fee' Christian tclence offers a higher form of therapeutics bared on the connection between divine thought and divine health and is Brand step beyond homeopathy which though not acknowledging it had really left the plane of matter In its higher attenuations reaching the stratum of human- will or thought -while Christian Science proffers the potency of divine mind and will at length redeem tho world from sin id sickness by the regenerating quickening power of that Mind thRt is Spirit Stirt ly nil good people suould and they will welcome this advent of
