Si.lt Like Tribune, Suodsy. April 12,1959 C19 Here's How U.S. 40 Springs "Death Trap" on Unsuspecting Drivers. WESTBOUND 2.1 MILES 2.0 MILES 1.7 MILES .35 MILE .3 ME .3 MILE .2 MILE And Claims Three Lives Cars westbound on U.S. Highway 40 from Salt Lake City are harassed by a maze of 13 road signs, confusing to U.S.

40 Juts, Dips, Swings the none warns of the death-trap curve atop the railroad overpass at Black Rock where four persons Hazard Spells'Death Trap' many of trie wrong kind of signs, none that would help avert disaster, a tricky hill and turn, a narrow roadway, poor paving and a safety fence that prevents one kind of accident but prevents evasive action to void another. THE DANGEB is equal for driving west and those driving east. But the westbound drivers are put to the severest test. They swing up the overpass and then, suddenly, at the top, the road veers to the right. If a car or truck comes from other direction at the same time the inevitable happens.

Vehicles collide and people die. ELMO E. MORGAN, director of the Utah State Road Commission, learned this past week of the death trap. He said he would inspect the area and do anything necessary to make it safe. The highway in area, he said, will be replaced by an Interstate highway in several years.

No major construction is planned for that sec-, are, they say: Too'tion of U.S. 40. But, he said, U.S. 40 juts like a rifle barrel west out of Salt Lake City, dips south around the shores of Great Salt Lake, then swings back toward Wendover and the Nevada desert. AS IT BOUNDS the southern shore, it snakes over a railroad overpass just west of the Black Rock Beach ap proach road, just east of the Tooele County line.

the narrow, turn- Ing, patchwork overpass four persons have been killed in head-on' accidents in the last 12 months. ON MARCH 22 of this year, two cars plunged together, kill- Ing the driver of one car, the driver and passenger in another. There were no survivors. On April 2, 1958, a car and a gasoline truck smashed head- on. The driver of the car was killed.

STATE HIGHWAY troopers and local officers call it a "death trap." It has earned the name. There that does not prevent adequate maintenance of the road or proper signing. FROM THE EAST there are signs telling the westbound travelers not to go over 50 miles an hour, to stay pff the soft sand shoulders, not to park, that they are approaching an historic marker, that they should not leave vehicles unattended, that they are near the beach entrance road. THEN, NEARER the overpass, a' small sign reads: "35 m.p.h." More no parking and soft sand signs, and a warning, "No Passing Next 4,400 Ft." No signs caution the driver that the overpass is dangerous, that it has a curve, that the roadway is narrow or the paving chipped, or that he should drive slow. EASTBOUND traffic approaching the scene first passes a "Speed Limit 50" sign, then a sign noting the Salt Lake, County boundary.

It's an invitation to disaster. Too often the invitation has been accepted.
