She enjoyed traveling, reading, and spending time with her family. She attended Grassy Branch Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Edna Hess Jar-rett; and husband, Robert Harry Bates. Janet is survived by her children, Mark Bates and wife, Linda of Fair-view, Kathy Bates Patton and husband, Kenny of Asheville, Roger Bates of Asheville, and Debbie Bates Cross and husband, Steve of Black Mountain; brother, Arthur Jarrett and wife, Mary Jane of Asheville; grandchildren, Jason, Lauren, Lindsay, Jordan, Derek, Trevor, Cyndal, Makayla and Mandy, and great grandchild, Landon. ASHEVTLE Joseph Richard Moorer, 78, of Asheville died Friday, iggg July 13, 2012 at rr Brooks-Howell Home. A na-' five of Philadel phia, Pennsylvania, he was son of the late Mary Olivia Wade Moorer Wertz and Joseph Richard Moorer, Sr. He was also preceded in death by his step-father, Noah W. Wertz. A 1955 graduate of Florida State University, he served in the US Army from 1955 1959.

He spent his career in market research and retired from The Nielson Corporation. Following his retirement, he owned and operated the Packaging Store on Mer-rimon Avenue. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and Central United Methodist Church. Funeral services in Orangeburg, SC will be announced by Morris Funeral Home, 304 Mer-rimon Avenue at a later date. He was the eldest and last surviving son of Alice M. Peterson Carmichael of Asheville and the late David Matthew "Pete" Peterson. Mr. Peterson was a retired US Navy Veteran and served during the Vietnam Era. He was employed with VAMC in North Chicago prior to his retirement Surviving in addition to his mother are his sister, Amelia Moore and brother, Anthony L.

Peterson of Asheville; daughters, Demetra P. Sebastien (Jude) of Miami, FL and Margaret Ellen Miller Peterson of Wisconsin; nine grandchildren, three greatgrandchildren; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty L. Peterson of Memphis, TN and his beloved brother, Harvey Peterson. A Memorial Service will be held Friday at Noon in St Paul Baptist Church.

A native of Buncombe County and a lifelong resident of the Fairview community, Millard was a son of the late J. and Annie Greene. He was also preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers. Millard was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church and was retired from Cranston Print Works. He was a WW II veteran, having proudly served in the U.S.

Air Force as an aircraft mechanic. Millard is survived by his faithful wife of 59 years, Iila Riggins Greene; two step-daughters, Betty Mc-Intyre and her husband, Bruce, of Horse Shoe and Janette Nanney of Piedmont, AL; three sisters, ALICE "ERNI" WOOD MILLS RIVER Erni went to be with the Lord on Monday July 16th at the Keever Solace Center surrounded by family and friends. She was originally from Seymour, Indiana and was preceded in death by her mother and father. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister and friend. She left behind a huge family who will miss her dearly including her husband, Rick Wood; sons, Bart (Sherry) Fitz-patrick, Brett Fitzpatrick, daughters Tippy (Jeff) Young and Tiffany Size-more; six grandchildren, Timothy Sizemore, Erin Young, Ricky Sizemore, Madison Fitzpatrick, Sienna Fitzpatrick and Sophie Fitzpatrick, and her precious puppy, Cammie.

She is also survived by sisters, Arthella Brower and Sharon Byers and a brother Tip Shields. Born March 22, 1960 in Newport, TN, she was the daughter of the late Arvlee Thomas and the late Pansy Marie King Thomas. Norma attended Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC before beginning her career in the banking industry and later in Human Resource for DRS Technology in Herndon, VA and most recently with DynCorp International. Norma enjoyed reading books by Nicholas Sparks and just last year visited some of the towns of which Sparks' books were based.

She also liked shopping and spending money on family and friends, and going on vacations with her family to Virginia Beach. Time spent with family and friends was an important part of Norma's life. She was always ready to hang out and have a good time. HUGH M. DAVIS SYLVA-Hugh M.

Davis, 77, Sylva, died Tuesday, July 17, 2012. He SjE25 was born June gjjgg 29, 1935, the son of the late Joe and the late Elba (Ashe) Davis. He served in the Navy and was employed by Dayco as a machine operator. He is survived by his wife: Patricia Nell (Dillard) Davis; a son, Jeffery Scott Davis; two daughters, Beverly Lynn Davis and Joy Davis Warren; three sisters, Joanne Moore, Carolyn Cabe, and Susan Winchester; and three grandchildren. Visitation is Friday at Appalachian Funeral Services in Sylva from 6 until 8 pm.

The funeral will be at New Hope Baptist Church in Sylva on Saturday at 2:00 pm. Revs. Mike Moore and Ernie Jamison will officiate. Burial will be in New Hope Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the New Hope church Cemetery Fund.

Now many Viennese are steaming by restaurateurs who want to start charging for tap. It amounts to cultural sacrilege in a city where delicious tap water fed by Alpine springs is seen as a birthright, and part of the whole experience of lounging in centuries-old cafes or the capital's outdoor eateries. To charge for water would "be absolutely outrageous as far as I'm concerned," said Marinko Medic. For now, payment is voluntary, with 11 restaurants participating in a charity meant to collect funds for clean water-starved Sierra Leone. But the establishments pocket half the water fee and prominent restaurateurs are starting to lobby for an obligatory tap water charge, unrelated to aid for Africa, just as the charity program has begun.

Conspiracy theory Many Viennese suspect that the Sierra Leone campaign and industry calls to charge for water cannot be coincidence. Caroline Wehner, a waitress, says a free glass of water with an order should be "part of good service in Vienna."
