In first place, not to put too fine a point upon it, the Board might not have desired to lie responsible for the continuation of the University under its present rebel auspices. The people are too poor to be taxed to pay for propagating a spirit of hostility to the Government. Perhaps -it occurred to the Board that if money was to be expended for edit cation, that the first duty was to apply it for the licnellt of common schools, where those would receive the benefits, who would otherwise be without any means 'oi' education whatever.

It was better to do this than to expend a large amount upon the University for the exclusive benefit of those who are amply able to educate thomselves without assistance Iroin the State. Let the common' schools be attended to first ami the.Univer sity afterwards. The demand for the former is pressing, and as birth-eaunot Inr-pnt into full operation at otfee, let the common schools receive the first attention by all Appointments by the Governor.
