B6 Monday, November 16, 2009 The Intelligencer To Place a Classified Ad Call 1-866-938-3010 www.intelllgenceronline.com Student leaders come together Pennridge High School hosted 800 students from around the state. BY HILARY BENTMAN STAFF WIUTER Eight hundred screaming, hollering teenagers packed the auditorium. The music was pumping, the lights blaring, and at the front, near the stage, a large mass of kids was jumping'to the beat. If you didn't know any better, you'd think this was a concert, not a statewide conference of student council representatives. But the members of the Pennsylvania Association of Student Councils are a rambunctious group and they brought that energy to Pennridge High School, which won a competitive bid to host the three-day 2009 conference, which concluded on Saturday.

More than 160 middle and high schools from across the state were represented by their student government leaders. The conference is student- planned and student-run. Pennridge seniors Abby Case, 18, Zach Costa, 17, and Dylan Van Arsdale, 17, co- chaired the event, the theme of which was Celebrity Councils. "It brings everyone together. We come together as a state," said Costa.

The 800 teens were housed with families throughout the area. They were accompanied by 300 faculty advisers from the schools. Over the course of three days, students spent time in workshops learning about leadership and networking, forged new friendships, and participated in iViini-THON, a three- hour dance to raise money for The Four Diamonds Fund, which fights childhood cancer at Penn State Hershey iVledical Center. Each year, PASC selects a charity to support. The Four Diamonds Fund was the 2009 choice.

PASC's mission "is to offer year-round opportunities to develop and apply leadership and life skills for middle level and high school students throughout Pennsylvania," according to its Web site. The organization recognizes individuals and their schools, promotes community service, networking and idea sharing. Several conferences and workshops are held for students throughout the year. Even though come from all corners of Pennsylvania, from Richboro to Altoona, Perkasie to Grove City, they have much in common. Matt Walsh, 17, of Abington Heights High School in Lackawanna County, voiced a recurring problem "school participation and getting (people) involved," he said.

Jeff Daye, a student at North Allegheny Senior High School near Pittsburgh, says there are often problems with the "cliqueness" factor. "You try to create a student environment that's unified," said the 16-year-old, who was hanging out at the conference with Rachel Lloyd, a 17-year- old from Pocono Mountain West High School. Even though they live five hours, and more than 300 miles apart, the two have become good friends through PASC. The conference also gave students a chance to share ideas for events and fundraisers they can take back to their home schools. At closing ceremonies, Pennridge senior Abby Case, who serves as the 2009 PASC state president, encouraged the students to get involved in their communities, expand their networks and keep friendships going.

"(PASC) has given me the desire to always strive for more," she said. Marietta E. Starner Patriarch Pavie 'Gidget' Director Paxil Wendkos, 84 LOS ANGELES (AP) Paul Wendkos, who directed over 100 films and television shows during a 50-year career, including the 1959 surf movie "Gidget," has died. He was 84. Family spokeswoman C. Christie Craig says Wendkos died Thursday in Malibu of a lung infection that followed a stroke.

"Gidget," starring Sandra Dee as an all-American surfer girl, was a hit and led to two sequels for Wendkos. His other films include the 1957 drama "The Burglar," starring Jayne Mansfield, and 1969's "Guns of the Magnificent Seven." For television, he directed series such as "The Rifleman" and "Hawaii Five-O." His made- for-TV movies include "The Legend of Lizzie Borden" and "The Ordeal of Patty Hearst." Wendkos is survived by his wife Lin Bolen, a former NBC television producer, his son Jordan Wendkos, a granddaughter, niece and nephews. Marietta E. "Mickey" Starner passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, at Doylestown Hospital on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.

She was 80. Mickey was the wife of the late Bob Starner Born and raised in Philadelphia and Fort Washington, daughter of the late Etta Worrell, Mickey was employed as a secretary and receptionist for many years at Standard Pressed Steel in Lansdale, and later at Eastern Rotorcraft in Doylestown. In the mid-70s, Mickey and Bob owned and operated The Big Dipper family restaurant in Doylestown. Mickey celebrated her 80th birthday in October, and BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) Patriarch Pavle, who led Serbia's Christian Orthodox Church through its post-Communist revival and the turbulent 1990s marked by ethnic conflicts in the Balkans, died Sunday. He was 95.

Pavle, who took over the church in 1990, has been hospitalized for months. He had heart and lung problems. The church said he died of cardiac arrest. Bells tolled from Serbian churches after the news of Pavle's death and the state-run television aired documentaries about his life. A respected theologian and linguist also known for personal humility and modesty, Pavle took over the dominant Serbian church just as the collapse of communism ended years of state policy of repressing religion.

He also headed the church during the turbulent years of the Balkan wars in the 1990s and the collapse of former President Slobodan Milosevic's regime in 2000. President Boris Tadic said Patriarch Pavle's death is a "huge loss" for the nation. Tadic said Pavle was ''one of those people who by their very existence bring together the entire nation. "His departure is my personal loss too," Tadic said, explaining he had often consulted with the patriarch about crucial national decisions. Tadic added that Patriarch Pavle was respected worldwide by both the Orthodox Christian churches and the pope..
