comparision of forces is all In favor of the United who have a heavy armored fleet a dozen cruisers and a few torpedo vessels Spain has a lighter but possibly more aeive armored fleet tin inferior force of bruisers and a for midable flotilla of torpedo boats and tor pedo boat destroyers This last is an im portant factor as since the Maine affair the Americans have evinced a deep and perhaps exaggerated respect for that de cidedly uncertain weapon Aho torpedo Spain can lose Cuba and the United States has a rich ocean borne trade largely coast ing that can be Injured The American coast cities are being rapidly fortified and few more weeks should render them able to beat off light raids Naturally the Unit ed States would try to hit Spain In Cuba Bpaln would try to raid the American com merce position In her mismanaged island Is very vulnerable as she has to im port much of the food tor her garrison from abroad and these supplies could be ma terially intercepted In addition the Unit ed States even without being rash enough to try a big invasion before lie Spanish fleet was cleared out of the way could give much aid and comfort to the insur gents by landing small parties Spain on her part may be expected to send every cruiser and privateer she can fit out to Infest the coast of tne United States and as long as the Cuban coaling ports remain Epanlsh these craft should prove able to do much damage It certainly looks as If the Interest of the Spaniards would be to etave off decisive actions with the heavyAmerican battleships and to carry on a delaying warfare as long as possible The menace of the torpedo fleet should prove Letter of Washington An interesting and hitherto unpublished letter penned by George Washington was exhibited at the last meeting of the Sons of the American Revolution says the Wash ington Post It was addressed to his friend Col Ball being in reply to a letter Informing Washington of his death It Is dated Mt Vernon September 22 1799 In this epistle Washington says: Your letter of the 16th received informing me of the death of my brother The death of a near relative always produces awful and afflicting emotions under whatever conditions It may happen That of my brother lias been so long expected that all around him must have been prepared for the stroke though painful in effect I was the first and now the last of my children by second marriage who remain When I shall be called to follow them is known only to the Giver of life When the summons comes I shall endeavor to obey with a good grace With general esteem and regard I am dear sir your affectionate servant GEO WASHINGTON Another letter exhibited was dated Mt Vernon December 15 1799 three months later written by Tobias Lear Washing confidential secretary and friend who was at his bedside at his death He in forms Col Ball of the death of Washing ton as follows: Little did I think when I last saw you that I should at this time have the painful task imposed upon me of informing you of the death of our beloved friend Gen Wash ington Alas! he is no more These hands performed the last act of friendship to the great and good man between 10 and 11 last night He expired after a short Widow for Pence am going to join the militia to mor row and go fight for the freedom of Cuba" said Boynton Hale who is 23 years old He was talking to his grandmother Mrs Eliza Brownlow widow of Brownlow the fighting editor of the civil war Mrs Brownlow who is 80 years old but active and in full possession of all her senses and lives at Knoxville Tenn re plied: "Son I do not object to your an swering your country's call if you are needed but listen there will be time enough for you to join the troops later I have heard about and experienced so much of war that I do not want to see another I hope President McKinley who is a good man will lead the country out of thia trouble without Philadelphia Telegraph Pitcairn Drying Up Whately a Second Adventist mis sionary who arrived here yesterday on the British Drummuir brings a report that famine will soon prevail op Pitcairn Island unless a well provisioned vessel chances to call there Whately says there has been no rain on Pitcairn for over five months and that all the usual crops have proved a failure There are 145 people on the Island of whom five are Euro peans He estimates that in a few weeks unless aid comes at least one third will not have enough to eat The Drummuir could spare but little food as her stock was not large our years ago Pitcairn was visited by so severe a drought that nearly all the cocoanut trees were killed Philadelphia Telegraph Thorpe I 14 and 16 GRATIOT AVE iQpposito In Our New Home A NEW STORE Containing over 25000 square feet of floor space we are now 5096 to 7596 Off Regular Prices Greatest Bargains Ever Offered in Detroit MATTER WOULD BE USELESS OPINION IN BERLIN POLITICAL CIRCLES IS THAT WAR IS COMING THE POINT AT ISSUE BEING DEEMED IRRECONCILABLE Every Newspaper Does President McKinley ull Justice for His Moderation and Desire for Peace Berlin April 9 (Copyrighted by the As sociated Press) All news of the Hispano American Is anxiously watched in Germany as the opening of actual hos tilities is expected and German interests especially her commercial interests are involved The newspapers although still hoping that peace will not be broken are beginning to discuss the probable effect of war upon trade Public opinion is much divided many of the papers expressing the opinion that the States ought to be satisfied with the concessions Spain is offering others declaring however that the United States Is right in demanding the absolute independence of Cuba as the only means of preventing a recurrence of the disturbances and quieting the just In dignation in America at Spanish misrule Hardly anybody In serious political circles doubts that war is coming the points at issue being deemed irreconcilable al though every paper does full justice toPresident McKinley's moderation and evi dent desire for peace The national con servative newspapers have taken the oc casion to point out that in the event of war Germany ought to seize the opportunity to attaln objects which her politicians have been aiming at for years 'Deutsche Zeitung the leading organ of this party expresses the hope that the German for eign office is arranging to "appropriate some more drive the Americans from there and take possession of one or more of the Antilles if possible the Danish is lands as Germany after Cuba has become American or independent will require a coaling station in those waters for her navy and merchant It is learned at the foreign office here that the Cannamaba incident has been sat isfactorily settled Spain agreeing to pay 450000 pesetas damages for the destruction of German property and the lives taken by the Insurgents Inthat part of Cuba In consequence of this settlement the Ger man warship Geier has been ordered to Brazil instead of going to Havana for the purpose of collecting an indemnity and punishing the perpertators of the outrage The newspapers however call upon the government to send at least one warship to protect German interests in case of hos tilities and it Is understood the navy de partment has instructed the officials at Kiel to send a vessel across the Atlantic In the event of an outbreak the official attitude of Germany will not be changed Under no circumstances will she depart from the strictest neutrality The Spanish ambassador here Senor Mendenz de Vigo made another attempt during the past week to secure intervention or mediation while Emperor rancis Joseph of Austria renewed his personal and con fidential solicitations on the same subject with Emperor William Germany how ever has taken up the position that the question exclusively concerns the United States and Spain and that unless both of these countries ask German mediation or good offices any steps in the matter would be useless It Is said on unexceptional authority that the queen regent is the initiator of the movement to enlist the pope in be half and Emperor rancis Joseph aided her but Emperor William warned them that the step was likely to meet with the decided disapproval of the majority of Americans A diplomat at the Spanish embassy In an interview said: Is ready for war If It comes While it Is true that a large number of the Spanish people are anxious for war the government Is trying to avoid it In the event of war the Spaniards can be depended upon to stand the queen regent and young king in spite of all the democratic conspiring which is going on It would be cowardly for them to act other wise The Yankee republic will find the present generation of Spaniards as chival rous as their Lieut Niblack the United States naval attache here and at Rome is awaiting or ders to proceed to Italy again Commander William Brownson the agent of the United States navy depart ment in Europe has been given authority to Issue Instructions to all United States naval attaches in Europe according to the requirements of the situation In fact there Is even a possibility that they may all be recalled home strictly reliable authority it Is learned that all the United States naval attaches have been ordered to end their negotiations for the purchase of warshins munitions of war etc The reason for this is that the time is regarded as too short to allow for the transportation of the purchases to the states before war is declared The same authority says heavy purchases have been made of war material the nature of which is kept a profound secret but which in the event of hostilities will play a most im portant role The Canada Life Assurance Co
