5 4 THE DETROIT' REE' PRESS: SATVRDAT NOVEMBER 1897 SLIGHT LET UP! TO nAY'S OOTBALL (LIMES MOSTLY SO NIICHLGAN' Pl Kill TJ PRACTICALLY OALY IX WEST WILL IT MUME L'HI I'HS YA HO CALI MiCHIGAA SECOND CLASSf LA 1 51 BIG SCOREl AHiAr LAAYurm: I qgfe JT AW I A A OrcwIuAcw Men lor Akr Uniiir 'lo ilay A khlgan VS Purdue at Ann Arbor CWcEgo Notre Dame at Nci Civ estern Rush Medical at Evanston Wisconsin vs Beloit at Madison Yaiu vr Chicago A A at New llavan Princeton vs Lafayette al Pennsylvania vs Carlisle Indians at Philadel phia Cornell vs Pennsylvania State at Ithaca West Point vs Lehigh at West Point Brown Vs Xewtnn A A nt Providence Williams Amherst at Amherst W4cyn Trinity at Haitf Dartmouth vs Vermont at Burlington A vs Akron A at Akion Detroit II vs Michigan Military Academy at A A little respite in the football season is indicated by the above series of schedules The Michigan Purdue game Is tho only one of high class In the west while the Prlnce ton Lafayette and Pennsylvania Carlisle games in the east are both of considerable importance Harvard seems to be resting tip fur the big struggle of next week with at least no game has been announced In the west there will either be no games for Minnesota and Illinois or else theywlll bo with strictly minor teams Michigan vs Purdue Will' the eleven at Ann Arbor score heavily 'L Have the Hoosiers improved1 since their 22 6 defeat by Oberlin and their 31 4 'defeat by Illinois? Will the game bo so fairly close that it will seem to indicate that Michigan is below the class of Illinois Chicago' and Wis consin? This last outcome is what western critics who are not partisans of Michigan uro inclined to believe The opinion is pretty well grounded by this time that the Michigan eleven has fallen off considerably this year while some of the Chicagoans profess to believe that their team has im proved over last form There are no Michigan men on the other hand who are claiming that their deam is stronger than last year Still there is excellent rea son for saying that none of the western teams is as strong as last year and if so It is yet to be seen whether or not Ute Michigan eleven is below the class of Chi cago and Wisconsin To game with Purdue may tell the tale aniltit may not Indicate much of anything A defeat of Purdue by a wide margin might be due to the faci that Purdue had gone back rather than forward since the game wdth Illinois It is more likely though that Purdue has improved and ia more dangerous after the experience of two big games If so a fair ly close game to day which seems rather prdbublc iwould secni to indicate that the Michigan eleven is weaker than it really is In all this no account has been taken of a chance for Purdue to win to day and that must be considered though of course it will generally be set down as a small chance Such an outeomc of the game would fully justify the position of those who want to put Michigan in the ranks of second class teams and yet hesitate about doing it There is a fairly' widespread feel ing that there may prove to lie something up the sleeves of the Michigan football management and that they are merely figuring on a steady and gradual improve ment until the event of the year on Thanks giving Dav As for to game the ex pectation may be that Michigan vill win and just by a fairly safe margin while at the same time the possibilities are so wide on either side that Michigan may even be chagrined by a defeat or the western critics be surprised by a big score on side The former is a more remote pos sibility than the latter Chicago is going to play a regular team against Notre I'an after all There are so many strange tales come from the Mid way campus that it is sometimes diiBcult to tell whether half the Chicago eleven are in a state of collapse or not The proba bility is that Herschberger will not plav to day but that the rest of the team will lino up as usual The injuries to and to ullback Gardner have reminded ihat his team would be mighty shy on punting if these men should both be out of the game so he is having Gordon CJarke try ills hand or rather his foot at fullback This is partly due also to the fuel that young Garry the new man at llrst a candidate for end has been show ing up so well at quarter Morti mer and Webb have been laid up this week and in general the practice has been in the more or less disorganized state that follows a big match such as that of last Saturday with Illinois The Notre Dame team fairly heavy and may prove bothersome at this stage largely on that account Their center rush Is a 210 pound man The Wisconsin Deloit game is interesting because of the sharp rivalry that exists between these institutions and because it may afford some further evidence us to strength It may be expected that the Badgers will show the result of their game with Minnesota last Saturday Then too Beloit Is not an easy team to beat Northwestern defeated them 6 0 and they scored on Chicago the result be ing 33 6 They are coached by Dr Hollis ter the old Wlirianis college and of baseball and football player and tho brother of Hollister formerly of Williams and Michigan Tn the east Yale will likely have trouble beating the Chicago A A Princeton will haidly equal 'score against La fayette and it will be interesting to see if Pennsy can continue to run up so many touchdowns in the game with the Indiansas she did against Lafayette and Brown The Williams Amherst game will determine which of the two will meet Dartmouth for the championship of the New England In tercollegiate League and Dartmouth seems sure to defeat whichever one it As the Newton A A has played Harvard and A ate it 'Will be worth while to follow the fortunes of Drown in the game with the Newton eleven to day If Princeton equal 16 0 against Lafayette and none of the followers expects to do so then we may expect to hear more comparisons unfavor able to Princeton They may be Insufficient too for Lafayette with all hen men in I retty fair condition again is as strong as when she played Corneil a tie and that means stronger than when she played Pennsylvania Though the Princetun prac tice has been much If ter this week mat ters are not what could be expected and the team and men have not reached that state of perfection yet which would war rant them in predicting a victorious sea son '1 here is lots to be done before the '140 outlie iiftd it ptentv to whip the men in shape for the game The most serious drawback at present is th number of Injured men The backs are more or less crippled and the other men are not free from hurts This Is due the heavy mass lays that are used practices as hard against the scrub as it does against an opposing eleven from another college In fact it is harder for the coaches make the men work hard The new plays are also tried and they are piass formations to a great extent There is not a practice held but that a new set of backs have to be used and this of course makes the work ragged If ft was not for that point matters would look nLor5 encouraging Trainer McMasters says lnit Kelly wul Le in shape to play jn the game tu oay The management sot the ireshtnen elevcn have reconsidered their action in canceling the game with Yale liWJ and a game has been arranged be tween the two ieams to be played at New Hnven November 13 Vale was at first un willing to play on any date but the 10th while Princeton held out for the 13th As the Tiger freshmen won last year the fiheeton hav5 to name the date for this game Temporarily at least Illinois has lost her coach red' Smith quarter back last year lie is down at Princeton giving Baird pointers Walter Camp is assisting in the coach ing at Yale though not very actively This Indicates that his criticism of the coachers there never became a personal matter as was stated all along Harry Williams is also there from Philadelphia and it is hinted that he has some modifications of back play to spring Rhodes the old old timer is of course in the thick of it too by this time having gone to New Haven from his business in Toledo The game with Chicago A A to day is looked upon as a tough one just at this time Clip! Cabot of Harvard whose has just been taken out of splints will be on hand tu see it Thompson who is back to help coach at Princeton says: got Yale whipped by any moans I can say positively and that game Is still de cidedly uncertain I saw the West Point Yale game Saturday and with live substi tutes Yale came nearly being outclassed but West Point has an exceptionally good team and showed pluck and determination that was commendable Notwithstanding the disadvantages that Yale was undergo ing in that game at times there were evi dences of that Yale spirit tna has won nijny grimes Yale's defense is not what it should lie but there is time to improve it With over two weeks to get in shape (or the Princeton game Yale may spring a surprise There is also 10 per cent dif ference in the fact that Yale will be play ing on home The A team left last night for Akron to play tho team there to day It yyas again difficult to get men enough who could leave business for an out of town game but the disbanding of the high school team furnished several players to help out They are lieibiing Walker and Downey' Lang captain of the Detroit college eleven will be a substitute and Hatch one of the club members who is on the scrubs at Ann Arbor will also go along as end rush The lineup will be: Murray center Eberts and Welz guards Collin and lieibiing tackles Hatch and Marymont ends Capt Ryan quarter Widman Sutton and Macleod halves Brooks fullback The substitutes are Downey Walker and Lang The most no ticeable things about this lineup are that Vt alter Brooks is back in the game again and that Ryan has shifted places with Marymcnt Eleven is Husky i Ann Araor Midi Xovpinber (Special) Michigan lines up against her old time football rivals from Purdue to morrow afternoon The general opinion seems to be that the will win put but will have to pl 'y its best to do so Purdue has net seen here since two yenrs they gave Michigan such a scare and were only defeated by the score run up against this year Their line will certainly outweigh Michigan's by a good average The of ficials for the game will bo Alward of the Chi cago Athletic Association and smith coach of the JjlmdK Hogg's ankle hajj been troubling him somewhat but he will play part of the game anyway The varsity took hard signal practice this af ternoon with Biirnbee and Smart as halfback The mt got off in good tion The rules of the school in regard to ath letics provide that only bona fide students shall play on tho teams which represent it and special Instructions had already been given to the foot ball team in regard to complying with these rules The investigation started yesterday re sulted in the high school football management being put under very strict ban and they have declared that they cannot maintain a team they have to depend entirely on Wgli school players After considerable discussion of the matter yes terday afternoon they decided to give up th ghost for the season ami aeeordlngiy canceled the game with the Orchard Lake team resh men mid Sophs Tied Ann Arbor Mich November 5 first game in the interelaas championship se ries was played this nfternocn by the freshmen and sophomore elevens Neither team scored in the two fittei mlmite halves nor was either goal Hue in danger of being erorsed The continued luifis have made the field muddv (and slippery but both teams put up a fair article of ball The freshmen outplayed the sophomores oil stages but cculd not gain nteadily enough to scorn Mc Lean was the only man on tho sophomore team to do much ground saining and Tho vlsitors are the heaviest team that Yale has had occasion to tackle thus far this vear the line averaging L'OO pounds to a ft on: and as line Is much lighter Capt Hedgers concluded that half an practice was advisable The of fensive play of the 'varsity was noticeable and thiee touchdowns were scored in succession against the scrubs The Chicago team arrived this afternoon and all the men nre reported in ex cellent condition Tho visitors are hoixful of beating Yale and there is no doubt that the game will be close Jess eft Cone Ii ing Olivet Olivet Mich November The col lege football City In interstate Lengae Springfield November (Special) The information was given out here to day by Presi dent Nelson of the Springfield baseball club Interstate League that Manager rank Torrey son of the had practically decided to transfer the franchise to Bay City Mich which Is a good ball town and which will permit Sunday games One reason he has for leaving Wheeling is that lie can secure valuable grounds only nt a great deal of expense such as putting up grand stand fence and so on It is added that he is after the ort Wayne franchise and that if he can secure it he wifi transfer it to Saginaw only eight 'miles from Hay City lie figures that by owning the two franchises lie would make great money as there is a strong rivalry between the two towns Saginaw is also favorable to Sunday ball ECHOES ROM THE DIAMOND Pittsburg has received an offer from an eastern club for Hawley and Donovan Demontrevllle the Washington shortstop lias at least one record Jf the report is true that during his two seasons with the Senators he has not missed a game Gns Schmelz manager pays a great tribute to Anson and says it is to be re gretted if the report is true that )ie will no longer manage tho Chicago club though he thinks Anson should retire from active work on the diamond Bobby Lowe may figure in a deal! Though he rendered good service to the Beaneaters this year Jie Is on an anvil and certain bean eating hammersmiths in the Boston team are still wielding the sledge au Wash ington Post Chauncey isher has' returned to bis home At Anderson Ind for the winter lie is anxious to go to Pittsburg under Watkins next year nnd he has not yet signed with Brooklyn isher Is not satisfied with showing he made during the last season and fears that he has lost the confidence of the cranks It is hinted that in one respect Brush is likely tb be gainer in 1 he transfer of Watkins to Pittsburgr for if advice is followed the Pittsburg managers will break away from reedman nnd ally themselves with the Brush faction With Pittsburg leagued with President Brush the "reedman faction could be easily han dled on his return to Pittsburg Manager Watkins said: is absolutely no truth in the report that we have deal on with the Cincinnati club wherefiy Donovan Is to go to that place in ex change for certain members of the Indianapolis team Yon mav state that Donovan will be play ing ball with the Pittsburg club next season We are not trying to weaken our forces It is quite true that vve would like to get McCarthy the clever with the Indianapolis club be cause be Is a first class player Cincinnati how ever has secured him" A question has arisen In baseball circles as to the abolishing of hlt by pltchcr rule Many players think there is no necessity for doing away with IM One of these is Joyce and his opinion should not go unheeded Some players will purposely allow themselves to be hlt by tho ball he says but unless the umpire is fast asleep no one can be hit by a ball tlit is thrown over the plate Joyce is right to a cer tain degree A batter can be purposely hit by a ball that the umpire would call a bail This with the bases full force In a run wheiel as if the player had not allowed the leather to lilt him there would be a chance of a strike out or a hit winch might result in a double play
