corner North and Parana, For President of flic United Slates MILLARD FILLMORE, OP KEW YORK. Tfce President of the United States, JAMES JONES, 07 TEHNESSEE. Ytmrsday, April 1850. Tho edtaiaUstratleri ef air. Fillmore.

The recent expressions of whig sentiment in bII 'sections of the 'Union indicate that the administration of the government by has given the highest satisfaction to whig party. We doubt not that the imksses 4he people who are swayed ltogetherby party partialities and prejndices all feel that he has performed his whole duty to the country. Here and there an abolitionist or a disanionist voice-is raised to disturb the general harmony, but it is -soon drowned in the chorus of public declaim. The tribute of praise is eminently doe to Mr. Fillmore.

His 'has been marked by wisdom, 'integrity, and It has increased the prosperity of tho country, and preserved and strengthened the Union. Tie ill-feeling, the-hatred which had sprung up between tbo North -and the Sooth have given place tn kinder and'juster 'senMmenu. The Constitti-tion (as. that -sterling conservative whig journal, tha'Philadelphia lnquirer, opportunely remarks,) has been vindicated tho laws have beon.maintained and many difficult questions in our foreign relations have been adjusted -fairly, properly, and amicably, oml in' -a manner too, to win for us the respect of tho civilized world. Not a cloud can be suid darken the national The present is bright with.

peuee, and the future is rich in promise. the people have reason to lie gratified with.n 'Government so happily administered. That they are so is quite apparent, from the manifestations of public son-timent, which ibeen voluntary and spontaneous, from a sense of right, proprietyand justioo. Indeed, so direct and straight-forward "navo been tho course and policy of tho national.Administration, that the Opposition, now that another Presidential Election is approaching, find' it extremely' difficult to discover reasonable grounds of attack. They point as the leading merit in-their own candidates, to fidelity to the Union to the Compromise.

And yet 'they -are compelled to admit, that upon both these the national Administration Is sound to the core. So.also indeed upon all -other great national questions, in which the hearts oi. the people take a deep interest, and concerning whioh they have expressed their deliberate opinion. The administration of Mr. Fillmore has worked so well that we see no reason wby.it should be superseded.

It has been tried and fuund to be of the right metal. No safer munthan Mr. Fillmore has proven -to be 'is -mentioned in connection with the succession and we are sure that the great body of the. whig jarty, with Mr. Clay, depreciate any change.

foreign Policy Aaiminietrotioui There has probably never been an administration Ihe Government whose foreign policy has been more eminently successful, (says the Augusta Ga. Chronicle and and which was so universally approved by conservative, and patriotic portion of the American people, as that -of Mr. Filtnore. That there Should be found those who pppose, condemn, and even denounce in opprobrious terms that policy is not only natural, but to-be-expected; desired, for the. opposition of extremists and ultraists always affords bigh videncd of conservatism and earnest devoted patriotism in political affairs.

Their opposition and denunciations are' therefore infinitely more to be courted than their praise, for. they serve to worn the masses, asa lighthouse to the mariner, of. breakers, of the dangers of appronchingtoo near their positions. That Mr. Filmore should -have drawn down upon liis own and the heads of hisCabinet the condemnation of such meh: while they have, with an ability unsurpassed, sedulously guarded and protected' the interests and honor of the nation and the rights of the citizens should beWof.

gralulation to every lover of his Jt augurs well for the Republic, be-ciiiise it.gives that they are building up the country; promoting the' prosperity of the people, and finishing, perfecting, and strengthening the glorious fabric reared by the hands of patriots, sages, and sires against the assaults of tho destructives. An official' announcement of the Secretary -of State in the National Intelligencer of the 23d ult. states that "information "tins been received from Charles Graebe, U. S. Consul for Hesse Cosset; Hesse Darmstadt and that in consequence of the general deficiency of I lie lust crop of grain, and the iih-price' occasioned the States composing the Zol- Verein of Germany.

hnve passed a Decree, that from the first of the present month to rfee first of September next grains, legumes, and flour can be imported into the Zoll-Verein free tif duty. The import "duty on grain previous to the. said degree was about 6even cents a bushel, and that on Jlour -amounted to a prohibition, being two dollars and fifty cents per barrel." jS The SoUTU-WESTEMt Mosthlt" for March was laid upon our table, yesterday. At the time of the departure of the Pacific from a rumor prevailed that this difficulty had "been arranged for the present." How arranged is not stated. This a consummation which would fill the measuro of Louis Napoleon's infamy, and leave no spot of earth on the old continent upon which the friends of human liberty can escape the persecutions of absolutism. Antrricuu Clippers. The superiority of the Collins Steamships over the Cunard line has been so frequently exhibited, that it is now a proverb. British steamers are compelled to rank second to the American. There is no disputing that point, The English press "confess the cape," reluctantly it is true; but not without awarding full credit to the successful rivals of their ship builders and founders.

But it seems that John Bull is doomed to another humiliation. American Clippers have entered the Chinese seus and are taking the "lion's share" of the rich trade which has heretofore strewed fortune's treasures into the laps of British Merchants as is indicated in the following paragraph cut from an English paper: "Captain T. B. Smith, of the ship Burkompore, the property of B. Gibson and Sons, of Hull, writes thu from Hong Kong-, on the 22d December last: 'Wc have an ovet whelming umount of splendid A-moiicnn ships in these waters, and they absorb tiie whole trade.

There is to be a public meeting of the citizens of Lincoln county at Fayetteville next Monday, for the purpose of deliberating upon the proposition to extend the Winchester and Alabama Railroad to Fayetteville. The last Legislature authorized the Winchester and Alabama Railroad Company to make this extension, and under the general Internal Improvement Law it ia entitled to the aid of the State. The Winchester Independent says, it "cannot be doubted but that the extension of the Winchester and Alabama railroad to Fayetteville will, when completed, work a powerful influence upon the agricultural, commercial, mechanical, and all other interests of that arid adjoining counties. Neither can we believe for one moment that the people there, who are so well able, will hesitate to embark in the enterprise and press it to a speedy and successful termination." We learn from the Gazette that Mrs. F.

While rounding out from a wood yard, on the Hih about 10 miles below Dardanella, on the Arkansas river, she collapsed both flues of middle boiler; blowing out principally aft, scalding eighteen persons, eight of whom died the next day before eleven o'clock.

VVe learn these facts from the Fort Smith' "Herald" of the '20tb, and Capt Moore, of the Pocahontas. The following list of sufferers was furnished to the "Herald," by a passenger on board who made a miraculous escape: KILLED. Wm. Pettit, Sd enginoer, Quincy. doubt not will be news to many. Mr. Powers never touched a chisel to the Greek Slave, or any other of his wonderful prodnctions. He says that those statues which we have so much admired are chiselled entirely by assistants. All the genius nnd labor of our great sculptor are expended on the models, after which the marble statutes are executed.
