the Michigan Central looked after the comforts of the Detroit guests and he proved himself to be a model host Much importance is attached to the new road as it joins the New York Central Canadian Pacific and Michigan Central Railroads giving to each advantages that have been under development for years Through service has already been opened on the east end of the line enabling through sleepers to be run from New York to Montreal and from the latter point to Toronto A number of trains are run dally between Buffalo and Toronto and it is pos sible that the Michigan Central may estab lish a through service between Detroit and Toronto The freight interests of the sec tion through which the new road runs will receive an immense benefit affording an outlet for Canadian manufacturers that they have never before enjoyed a fact that was emphasized by the kindly reception tendered by the business men of Brantford Ont a hustling manufacturing city which has heretofore been handicapped Seegmlller removed Northville Mich July 8 A nice little question of law is likely to be raised in this village by reason of the wording in the bill passed by the last legislature di viding the township of Plymouth and be fore It is settled it may become somewhat complicated Art 4 of the enactment spe cifies that officers holding office in the township at the date of the passage of the act shall continue in authority over the entire township until their successors for both the townships of Plymouth and North ville shall have been elected and The date ot the passage of the act was April 8 though it was not to take effect until April 4 1898 The term of the justice of the peace does not expire until this month At the election April 4 last Lowden was elected to take the place of Webster but inasmuch as Webster was holding the office of justice the time of the passage of the it is claimed that he holds over until the next election Jus tice Webster claims to have an opinion from Prosecuting Attorney razer that this Is correct and it is said he will make an effort to hang on to the office friends however claim the act had no such intention and that it was drawn with a view of taking in the first place but owing to some ob jections being raised it was changed to go in force at the next spring election and this technical point was overlooked At torney General Maynard has been appealed to for an opinion and in the meantime Justice Wf bster sits on the throne Other offices may possibly be affected also where the newly elected officers who wre elects did not qualify before the night of April 8 Lansing Mich July (Special) Gov Pingree has run counter to some of the best legal talent in the state and declared that a vacancy exists on the state's prison board The governor declares that the statute of limitations ended the official career of Albert Stiles of Jackson as a member of the board on ebruary 15 and that he has had no the board since that therefore appointed of Chelsea tn dav tn it is understood that Mr Stiles will not contest the right to make the appointment although he is advised that he is a member of the board until his suc cessor is confirmed by the senate Gov Pingree made two attempts to fill the office when the legislature was in session but failed to do so Brooks of Jackson was named but he was not satisfactory to the senate and William Judson of Ann Arbor who was next offered the place was found to be ineligible because he was holding the office of sheriff If It is the governor's intention to get rid of Warden Chamberlain by the appointment of Holmes he will have reckoned without his host as a majority of the board are still in favor of his retention The governor to night appointed Harry Davis of Traverse Meechem of Ann Arbor a member of the state board of law examiners to succeed himself The Michigan Central Railroad officials returned from their tour of inspection of the Toronto Hamilton Buffalo Road late last night Yesterday morning the party boarded a boat at Toronto crossing Lake Ontario to Niagara on the lake where the the ride th was utes In wnicti to do it This leads to the belief that when Mahoney with intent to do bod ily harm Walsh Is an escaped convict from Kingston penitentiary and he was arrested last riday in a house on Arthur street by a squad of Windsor and Detroit officers Before his arrest he managed to pull a revolver and slightly wound Mahoney in the leg NV Hanna appeared for the prisoner and Detective Mahoney gave an account ot the shooting and the arrest of the prisoner After hearing the evidence the magistrate asked NValsh if he had any thing to say and he replied in the nega tite He was then committed for trial be fore Judge the prisoner having made this choice himself The authorities realize that they have a desperate man to deal with and are tak no chances that will afford the prisoner an avenue for escape When the officer went to the count jail yesterday to bring him to Windsor he was given special In structions to see that the prisoner was properly handcuffed before leaving the pris searched before being brought to Nvindsor and a piece of lead pipe was found concealed in his clothes Where he secured it is a mystery He has made the statement that he will take desperate chances to escape going back to prison but in all probability after his trial he will be safely conveyed to Kingston to servo out his unfinished and likely an ad oition to it for his latest exploit PROSTRATED BY HEAT GET HOME lint Mich July About 9:30 this evening there was a daring jail deliv ery in full operation at the coufity jail and Sheriff boarders were one by one bidding him a silent and permanent good bye when they were discovered by Mrs McCall who heard them jumping from the roof to the ground below The discovery was not made until Thomas Warren Charles Melvin Bennett and Clarence McColIom had safely slid to the ground and each had gained his liberty An alarm was at once sent out and the deputy sheriff city marshal and his assist ants began scouring the country in search of the escaped men The prisoners pried open a portion of the ceiling and roof directly over the upper tier of cells and then scaled the walls to the earth below It was a daring undertak ing the job having been skilfully planned and ably executed The prisoners were all
