or two later a man from Virginia by the name of William Large was victimized in the same manner and by men bearing sim ilar description to the first The matter was reported to Chief of Detectives Pittman and Detectives Turner Sidobottom and McConnell were detailed to work it np Last night Officers Turner and Sidebottom in company with Capt Casteen and Detective Pittman arrested two men who answered the descriptions accurately They were stopping at a private boarding-house on North Cherry street and when taken into custody failed to give a satisfactory explanation of their presence in the city further than to state that they were gentlemen of leisure and were traveling for their health and neither had Been the other before This statement however evinced a deficient memory for they had been seen talking to each other several times of late yet from their conduct at the police station one would be apt to believe their story for most beautifully did they act the part of strangers Not until they were placed behind the bars did they so much as look at each other but when they found themselves companions in misery they locked arms and commenced an earnest conversation Both men were well dressed and possessed gentlemanly manners but gave way to their tempers under the scathing cross-examinations to which Capt Casteen subjected them Their game is an old one but rarely fails when maneuvered artistically Mr Jones tells the story of his victimization as follows: was standing at the lunch counter at the Chattanooga depot when a gentleman stepped up and ordered a cup of coffee He opened the conversation by some commonplace remark finally askin me my destination which I told an he replied he was going to the same place We talked together some time and then boarded the train taking a seat together Justus the train was about to start another gentleman approached my new-found friend very hurriedly and in an excited manner exclaimed: you give me $35 right now I will have that body taken off the train and you will have to stay over all night My companion seemed greatly embarrassed and modestly explained that the body referred to was that of a relative which he was taking home for interment at the same time drawing from his pocketbook a $50 bill and offering it to the supposed undertaker who rather rudely rejected the bill with the exclamation that he had no change and the train would not wait for him to get it My companion then turned and hesitatingly asked if I would lend him that amount until we reached our stopping point I complied with the request quickly counting out the money and handing it to the gentleman in apparent bereavement He equally as promptly transferred it to the other party who started for the door of the coach My seatmate jumped up and saying something about giving the undertaker some instructions followed him to the door The idea struck me all of a sudden that I had been robbed and I started for the platfbrm bntwhen I got there neither of the parties was in sight and the train was leaving 1 looked up and down the platform but could not see an officer anywhere and by the time I found one the slick scoundrels were beyond The prisoners gave their names as James DePew of Alabama and William Armler of Florida DePew says he is engaged in the grocery business and Armler claims to be a printer Detectives bidebottom and Turner deserve the credit for working up the case TWO EVIL DOERS SKIN CANCER Several years ago I was called to see a colored woman who had a malignant form cancer on her foot The cancer grew worse involving the quiet of religious services in three churches created a sensation here Sunday Mr Warden of Texas formerly of this vicinity and Miss Cora Wells daughter of Mr John Wells went to the Baptist Church armed with the proper license intending to have their interests made one by the marriage tie Unexpectedly to the young people the lather of the would-be bride who was opposed to the match was in the church but not anticipating the purpose of the ybuug couple was giving close attention to the sermon of Rev Mr Ussery the pastor Seeing this the lovers left the church and hastened to the residence of Dr Howlettwho is a Magistrate Dr Howlett was from home visiting a patient From bis residence a race was made to the Presbyterian Church into which the young people entered and presented themselves in front of Rev Frierson who was delivering his sermon and handed him the license saying not a word Mr Frierson told them he was now conducting divine service whereupon fearing danger from delay they retired from this church and went to the front of the Methodist Church and sent in one of their number with 4he request to the Rev Moore to stop his discourse long enough to consummate their marriage The preacher kindly consenting to their wish the bridal party entered the church the ceremony was said the minister was handed his fee and the happy pair and their friends left as hurriedly as they had entered They returned at once to the Baptist Church and resumed their accustomed places until the close of the services In a few days they leave for Texas their future home The novelty and suddenness of the movement so excited the humorous element in the Presbyterian and Methodist congregations that the preachers yielded to the inevitable and dismissed their hearers
