awing in the pit of Harry Forbes' stomach in the second round of a scheduled 20-round fight Forbes by virtue of holding the championship was a 2 to 1 favorite in the betting but Neil in spite of that fact had many local supporters In the first round of the fight no effective blows were landed Forbes appeared in aplendid condition and was much the showier boxer of the two But he could not land effectively When they came up for the seCond round Neil lashed out with hie left and huided a terrillo punch on Forbes' stomach The Eastern champion doubled up like a sack knife and fell over backwards Ile lay in the corner of the ring and gasped for breath but managed to get up before ten seconds were counted Neil went at his man like a young tiger and rained a shower of blows on the almost defenseless Forbes Another punch in the stomach sent Forbes down again and Referee Graney counted him out Neil evidently did not hear the end of the count for as Forbes struggled to his feet Neil landed another left on the jaw and sent his man under the ropes There was a vigorous cry of foul from the Forbes people but as their man had already been counted out it was of no avail Considerable interest was manifested In this contest as the men met before when Neil claimed a foul which WaS not allowed by the referee and the decision was given to Forbes Johnnie Regan of St Louis challenged the winner There was much Interest aroused in labor circles Thursday by the publication in The American of the steps being taken to unionize the laborers connected with the public works of Nashville This movement Includes all those connected with the street sprinkling scavenger and other departments as laborers There may be a union formed of each class For this purpose a meeting has been called to be held Sunday afternoon at the hall of one of the local unions on Union street It will probably be of interest to state that the unionizing of public employe is not all that the present movement means As soon as the city laborers are organized it le understood to be the intention of the local labor leaders to branch out to other toilers and bring Into the folds of the unionism hotel waiters cooks coachmen drayrnen and every class where the number Is sufficient to constitute a union Not only will the laborers be Interested in this movement but those giving employment will doubtless take an interest in the ultimate outcome It Is understood to be the policy of local labor men to bring into the union every class of labor Charles Fahey one of the prominent local leaders stated in an interview Thursday that the movement as to the common laborer is by no means new having been under colsideration for several years The State Federation of Labor Mr Fahey stated had nothing to do with the movement bu It wan in the hands of the local trades unionists and the local organizers for the American Federation of Labor Continuing Mr Fahey stated that the movement would be pushed to a finish The city laborers he 0 tatedwere well pleased with the hours and increased pay but realize the importance of organizing a union The Exetutive Committee of the Tenneesee Woi id'a Fair C011111111iSIOn held a meeting in the office of SecretaryB A Enloe in the Capitol Thursday morning and tranaacted a considerable amount of business of importance Gov Frazier presided and the following member et were present: Secretary Enloe and Hon John Fry Mai Lewiti being out of the city Secretary Enloe was instructed to call on all State institutions for exhibits at bt out front membership in the aseoclation editors who have left the profeesion and entered other lines This will be done in order to exclude all but bona fide members of the press from the association The Committee on Constitution and By-Laws met Thursday night in parlor of the Tulane Hotel for the pin- pose of disouseing the plan to amend the by-laws so as to shut out all but legitimate newspaper men The Se Ft- sion was an executive one none but members of the committee being admitted After the meeting the committee would give out nothing but It was generally said around the hotel lobby that the committee had decided to recommend that all who are not actively engaged in newspaper work be dropped from membership and that whenever a rnember cease his connection with newspaper work hereafter he shall by that fact cease to be a member of the Tennessee Press Attsoelation A hard fight is expected to-day should the report of the Committee be as outlined above as meny of the members are not now actively engaged in newspaper work but it is probable that any recommendation the committee may make along these 'lines will be followed out Among the Tlewspaper men in ev1 denre around the rity of it there anti the sticeetts that has attended It is inspiring compared to the traditional agricultural stories of hard luck In the section during the period ot gathering which extends from about April 1 to Aug I something like 1000 cars of various vegetables and strawberries were shipped Out to various points in the country The aggregate value of the production Wail WSAil Arid the year might almost have been called an off year at that This was all within a radius of eight Miles of Humboldt "The industry began about twenty years ego" said Mr Rooks with tilt cultivation of strawberries" A Horing was the first to go In the busineee Col Romamon and other well-known planters soon following The culture of strawberries grew to such an extent that PO etas have been shipped from the section In a snuck day During the past season 300 cars were handled "The sueeess of strawberry cultivation led to the planting of early vegetables such as beans peas cucumbers and potatoes Late tomatoes and early cabbage were tried with mueh success The euccors In the early vegetable line has been so great as to practically stop the growth of cotton within a reaeonahie distance of the railroad around Humboldt "The shipping of tomatoes has Just ended and the reeirlue of the crop is new'being turned over to the canning factories at Humboldt and Dyer Station There Is a late Irish potato crap to be marketed yet but the season le about clotted on everything else Totnatoes conatituted the banner crop this iteason there being 400 cars shipped Tennessee now sets the standard in quality though good tomatoes are not confined exclusively to the Humboldt territory Chattanooga being a producer of a splendid quality "In our territory this eeason totnatoee have yielded as high as five or six hundred bushels of the market article to the acre "The culture of early cabbage has Just been started Seventy cars were shipped during the past season "The cultivation of strawberries end Ca rly vegetables" continued Mr Rooks "has been very profitabie As result the section is becmning dotted everywhere with comfortable farm houses and new barns Prosperity extends over the whole section and our neighbors have been ettrected by it Lexington Bolivar Jackson and Kenton are preparing to enter the indumtry In some instances this year the net profit accruing to several of our plant from their crops exceeded the value of their farms Almost all of them are prnepering Instead of being borrower they lend money own bank stock end buildings In eldition the farms are Increaeing in value with every crop owing to the extensive fertilizing that is neceesary" YOUTSEY ON THE STAND IIAD A FINE TIME All of the soldier boys have enjoyed their stay in Camp Frazier and probably never in the history of the State
