Ward's favored land shall ever wave again Our fields have grown green again our cities are rising to commercial grandeur and magnificent proportions our hills are opening their rich veins of industry and enterprise our common schools are increasing and elevating the ignorant masses our colleges and churches are multiplying our people are rising from the dead past to the living present and promising future the freest people on earth from vice and immorality from anarchy and isms from Sabbath desecrations and infidelity from political disturbances and social disorders For all these blessings the Booth especially should be devoutly thankful to God and in bewailing our sips and invoking God's blessings yet to come we should pray for the' continuance of such genial and equable administration of our Government as now bestows so many blessings upon our sunny land I think the entire nation Is proud and grateful for the administration of President Cleveland and for his charming sensible and admirable young wife in her social relations "Upon great general principles'tve should be grateful to God for- all the blessings of our present government It is the best in the world with all its faults Purified as it is and properly administered it has no peer in history Here we have no union of church and state and a man is not taxed to support an establishment in faith Conscience is free and a man can worship God according to the dictates of his conscience 'beneath his own vine and fig tree with none to molest or make him afraid' No other land beneath the sun enjoys such religious liberty nor such political and social freedom It is a wonder that anyobdy should become dissatisfied' with it Here every man within the limitations of law can stand upon his own merit and rise to honor fortune or fame by his own energies and he is not discounted by the titles positions or prestige of any lorm ot aristocracy or despotic social distinction Human equality and individuality never had before the American government the sanction of God's authority and the power of God's freedom to stand upon their own bottom and to assert their own rights "A man never was a man in the light of human government until 1776 and upon no people beneath the sun rests the responsibility of maintaining 'the God-given right of humanity as upon the American people" TEXXESSEE shown themselves as capable as men wdman composes one-half the unit the whole being better than a part Why not endow each half with equal and full privileges Since man cannot run the government smoothly let woman have a chance woman's vote will tend to purify politics the functions and duties of woman are as closely related to politic! as are those of man since woman can vote on specific industrial projects she should vote upon the regulation of industrial laws women want to vote" Washington Moore of Tennessee followed Mr Moss and contended that women did not want to vote that the franchise was a political not a natural right their ballot a symbol of weakness rather than strength would not bring about needed legislation women would be" subjected to corrupt influences in order to control their votes w6men would look at questiqns from narrow and prejudiced standpoints and morality would not be furthered in granting suffrage to women a weak and distracting element would be added to an already complicated system of government man's admiration for woman would lessen and there would be more old maids it would lead to family dissensions bring disagreeable duties without compensation the leaders of the movement favor absolute divorce no precedent Is furnished and In vot-' ing woman will forfeit her right to homage and reverence The debate was closed by John Barrett of Vermont who made a very fine speech He said without going into detail that woman's suffrage had been tested and proven to be a success women would elect better men improve the morality of elections and subserve their own wants better than men could by voting and this would not in the least detract Irom their pu- rity and attractiveness in home life and in society No commandment in the Bible says 'Woman thou ehalt not vote' Mr Barrett's speech was full of entertaining allusions After a bri-f consultation Mr Ruhm on behalf of the Committee of Judges declared a decision in favor of the negative side of the question From the manner in which the question was framed it is seen that the de-cision favored woman's suffrage Unexplained Shots Several pistol shots were heard about 10 o'clock in the
