THE DAILY AMEBICAIN" 3STAS11 TUESDAY MOROTG DECEMBER 5 1882 8 15 A STUDIO THE WATER-WORKS TROUBLE ia Interesting Tlsit to the Booms of a Well-known Lady Artist First Engineer Mackenzie Insists on the Truth of Ills Former Statements And Ef peats That iho Coal Hitherto Tarnished lias Hot Been of the Required Quality A i The Proposition Lately Repair Hitherto Made at tbe Pumping Station From Humphrey Timothy New York to Timothy ros Trade Palace NashTille Tenn For several years past Miss Bettie Soovel has been turning her attention to all species of art work until bow a visit to her studio affords positive pleasure and shows what one woman with energy as well as genius can accomplish Miss Bettie is gifted in all kinds of art work crayon drawing etching painting in oil or watar colors on satin or any other material china painting plaster casts etc The china painting is a specialty and she now possesses a furnace with which to burn tbe colors into the painted ware This furnace was put together by her own fair hands and from it she turns out work eqnal to the beet in the land and that which formerly had to be sent to Chicago or other distant cities can now be done liere The ladies of this city and elsewhere have developed a great fondness and aptitude for china paintiog and some of the more industrious have orr amen ted for themselves whole sets no two pieces of which bear exactly the same figures Mrs Jane Watkins was one ot these ladies ornamenting a large number of pieces On the studio table were some exquisite fpscimens Two platters from the hands of Mrs A Barry were especially beautiful One was a small urchin and an immense turkey gobbler who was browbeating him and evidently asking "Who said anything about Thanksgiving?" The other was a hunting scene the man with his gun dog hunting basket and a boy all admirably executed and beautifully colored Miss Minnie Cherry had four beautiful little pieces belonging to a tete-a-tete set which will posseea an additional value to her from being her own handiwork Miss McFarland had a plaque with the paintirg "As good aa a mother" on it representing a little barefooted girl in long night-dress feeding a little nesi of birds while behind her was the dainty little bed with a different kind DEC I have sent you per express eighty imported Fur Seal and Plush Trimmed mhl2 sutnly 4thp ON" THE SQTJAHE To the American: In Sunday's issue of the American a local article headed "Oar Water Works" appears which is reported as the action of the Water-works Committee and places me in a very bad light before the pnblic leading them to believe that Messrs Ken-drick Co'a coal was wasted and the money of the city needlessly spent while in fact the reverse is the case Mr Moore says in calling the committee that It rvas to take action in reference to complaints made by me concerning the coal furnished by Messrs Kendrick Co and he believed that the complaints did Messrs Kendrick Co injustice I am surprised at such language coming from the chairman of the Water Works Committee when he knows that I have called his attention many times to the bad coal and requested bim to go to the Mayor and have the thing stopped and to come out and look at the coal himself I have never complained of the coal as long as we were able to make Bteam enough to run the same when near the pressure that is required to furnish the higher parts of the city with water No matter how hard work it was bat one-balf of the time we are nnable to raise it to tbe reservoir I do not care about the time it taxes either But I do not think that it is rigat to pay any one a premium to furnish bad coal as it sometimes takes twenty-four hours to do the work that ought to be done in seventeen and the city has to pay Messrs Kendrick Co two dollars for every hour extra over eighteen hours Besides people who pay for water ought to have it The preposition as male by Messrs Kendrick Co and accepted by the Waterworks Committee is of the most pre Absolutely Pure This powder never varies A marvel of parity ftrength and wholeeonieneas Mora economical than the ordinary kinds and cannot be sold
