Interfering with the Iron Star affairs Receiver Appointrd for the Iron star Mlulnir Co The Court Record Wm Johnson proprietor of a board ing house at 455 Cass avenue was yester day held to the grand jury by United States Commissioner Graves upon a charge of passing a counterfeit bill A few weeks ago wife paki a servant girl several small bills among them a $2 bill which she returned the next day to Mr Jobnsou informing him that it had been pronounced counterfeit at one of the banks Johnson took back the bill and gave the girl good money in its place Johnson then showed the bill to several of his friends among whom were busi ness men Thej assured him that the bill was genuine On August IS last Johnson went to the saloon of Neff in the neighborhood ot the Detroit Stove Works where he had business and handed the barkeeper the returned bill to be changed This was done and Johnson re turned home Neff shortly afterward in formed the federal authorities of the pass ing of the counterfeit bill upon him and arrest followed The $2 counterfeit bill which Johnson is accused of passing is so well executed a to be almost difficult of detection by the ordinary man Mr Johnson yesterday told the commissioner be would not have tried to pass it had he not felt convinced that it was genuine Johnson was held to await the action of the grand jury in IS bonds The friendly suit to test the validity of the $50(Aj bond issue for the improvement of Belle Isle bridge recently authorized by the common council was submitted to Judge Donovan yesterday Judge Hatch in resuming his argument begun earlier in the week showed that M009J0 had been paid for the park and improvements and for the bridge In this way the attorney said all of the worth ot bonds authorized bad been issued He also claimed that the charter of 1SS3 authorized Detroit to buiid a bridge over the Detroit river or dig a tunnel under it and the city was authorized to Issue bonds but no limi tation was made Ln the same section however it was' provided that the city could expend $5uQOtM over the American channel to Belle Isle Judge Hatch con tended that the two provisions were widely dissimilar one providing tor a bridge or a tunnel to Windsor the other for a bridge to Eelle Islo In reply Corporation Counsel lowers stated that the state legislature of course could not have meant to provide for a bridge to Caiiada the authority for whicn rests exclusiveiyf in the national congress and the Canadian parliament The bridge referred to in the charter of lia3 was the Belle Isle bridge' and inasmuch as only ggMCXX) of the authorized had been expended the council certainly has au thority to authorize the issue of the $ju 00 worth of bonds in question Judge Dono van sad he would hand down a decision Monday Controller
